Self-described "cello rock ensemble" and altogether costumed performance artists, Rasputina, are back with their sixth (!) full length effort, Oh Perilous World! , set for release on June 26th. The kids have appeared or been involved in many a project, including the likes of Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Porno For Pyros, Belle & Sebastian, Cheap Trick, Joan Osborne, Bob Mould and the illustrious Goo Goo Dolls. Mixing cabaret with current events and fairy tales and nightmares in between, Rasputina is surely a group should be checking into over and over again. Oh perilous tracklist: [...]
THIS WEEK'S FINDS week of May 20-26 "Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe" - Okkervil River This sort of anxious, cinematic indie rock is bound to remind many of us here in 2007 of the Arcade Fire, and yet let's note right away that this Austin-based quintet has been around since 1998, so do the math, as they say. From its wonderful if off-kilter title to its highly disciplined if slightly unglued sense of both song and production, "Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe" strikes me as pretty [...]

A few years ago, I had this great Creative Writing class, with Ross and Tommy and a bunch of other kids. They did some of the best work I've seen yet, and I loved them. It was good. For his final project, Tommy brought in a doll's head, decapitated and with the top of the skull — which had been shorn off — held on tight with a large square silver hinge. Inside, of course, were "Poems and Prose from a Deranged Boy's Head." Fantastic. Awesome. I keep that project in a cabinet, [...]

The covers in today's post are as random as ever, but I think I can honestly say that I pretty much like them all. Heh. "Pretty much." Way to commit, huh? Seriously, there is something I do like in all of these tracks and I hope you do too. Oh, and hello to any new visitors who've found this as a result of the piece on covers in the new issue of Oxford American . (And thanks to Boyhowdy who alerted me [...]
People who know of Rasputina insist that they are Goth. To me, Rasputina's music is different... a little dark... sounds like it came from the ancient minds of music, from times that were dark and classically melancholy. So maybe they are "Goth." I don't know. I don't really care. All I know is that I love them. I mean, their main instruments are cellos! How could I not love them? Check out these covers. A beautiful rendition of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and a dark "You Don't Own Me," made famous by Lesley [...]
Rasputina are a New York based trio led by Melora Creager a classically-trained cellist who also supported Nirvana on their final tour. The band produces music that is hard to classify into any one genre which makes them all the more intersting. Combining two cellos and a drummer, the band produces sounds that are incredibly large and vibrant. At times one can hear so much from so little. While listening to their music, I thought I was hearing a full up rock band (guitars and all). It is amazing music and one you need to check out. [...]
Brian K. Vaughn’s Ex Machina (Wildstorm) and Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead (Image) are two of the most popular comics on the shelves these days. They both come from writers who are probably better known for other work: Vaughn on Runaways (Marvel) and Y: The Last Man (Vertigo), Kirkman on Marvel Team-Up and Invincible (Image). Although these [...]
