A few months ago I complained that few albums released this year had grabbed me; suddenly there came an avalanche of quality albums that compensated for my disappointment in sets by some favourite artists that I had looked forward to. I have not been able to get on with the Ben Folds and Nick Hornby collaboration, much as I am a Folds fan and as I like Hornby's books. Joshua Radin's album is decent enough, but it did not attract the affection I had for his debut album. Jenny Lewis' collaboration with Jonathan Rice bored me. Even the [...]

Raul Malo revisits his country, rock and Latin roots After spending the better part of the last decade edging away from the sounds of the Mavericks, Malo began to find his way back from cover songs and supper club countrypolitan with last year's genre-bending Lucky One . Here he takes an even more personal step, producing himself in a home studio and finishing off the tracks in Ray Benson's Austin-based Bismeaux Studios. Malo reconnects with the upbeat Tex-Mex (or really, Cuban-Country) and gripping balladry that made his earlier work [...]

Since dissolving his trendsetting alt-country band The Mavericks in 2000, former frontman Raul Malo has propelled his affection for a variety of influences in his music -- country, rock, R&B, jazz and Latin -- into a diverse and acclaimed solo career. Of course it doesn't hurt that Malo possesses a rapturously pure tenor vocal that critics have called "exquisite" and "exceptional" and has drawn comparisons to Roy Orbison, Frank Sinatra and country legend George Jones. Over four solo studio albums, Malo has done his share of interesting covers (06's After Hours , [...]

Former Mavericks vocalist summons country, swing, Latin and more Following three albums that visited MOR supper-club pop (2006's You're Only Lonely ), swing (2007's After Hours ), and a broad palette of seasonal sounds (2007's Marshmallow World and Other Holiday Favorites ), Raul Malo returns with his first album of original material since 2001's Today . His latest songs circle back to the genre-stretching experiments of the Mavericks' last two albums for MCA (1995's [...]
I am one of very few that thinks U2 really isn't that great, other than The Joshua Tree and a few other random songs. The fact that Rolling Stone gave the new release five stars pretty much guarantees I won't like it. But Neko Case ... ohhh Neko Case. If only you were ten years younger. Anyway, you already know I like her new album , so there's that. Wild Light 's debut is catchy, but I bet the feeling won't last long. We shall [...]

We ease into springtime mode (and SXSW in Austin) with this fine new album from Raul Malo, Lucky One. This is the first album of original material from the Mavericks front man in about eight years, and fans of the big guy with the big voice won't be disappointed. The songs wheel from country thumpers ("Lonely Hearts") to swing with a little Latin flavor ("Moonlight Kiss"). Produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, the songs on Lucky One get a big boost from inventive arrangements and fine instrumentation (including Raul himself on guitar). Malo is huge among Americana (alt-country, [...]

Ok, so that's not new Neko Case - but new Neko Case comes out today! And more! After the jump... U2 - No Line On The Horizon My ultimate hope here is that "Get On Your Boots" and the other songs I've heard via [...]
