The last time we saw Ravens and Chimes on MTIB was over a year ago, since that time the band has endured a harrowing tale of survival. According to Consequence of Sound, who calls upon the knowledge of MTV Hive, Ravens and Chimes almost didn't even complete their sophomore album, Holiday Life . There was in-band fighting, and a shortage on cash and time among other things. However, the band pulled through and now have tour as well as a second album on it's way. To highlight their efforts and accomplishments, we've got a song from the [...]

It was just two weeks ago that I rediscovered Ravens & Chimes lurking in the corners of my digital library. I didn't realize that they were about to release a new LP, Holiday Life , that has been a long time coming. According to MTV Hive, it took almost three years of in-band fighting, lack of funds, and working around day jobs to finish the album. Holiday Life will be released on April 3rd via Better Looking Records. Ravens & Chimes - Night [...]

Brooklyn baroque five-piece Ravens & Chimes ' sophomore album almost didn't happen. According to MTV Hive, it took almost three years of in-band fighting, lack of funds, and working around day jobs to finish what would be known as Holiday Life . But like any band worth its salt, Ravens & Chimes incorporated these setbacks into their songwriting, whose morose arrangements focus on loss and expectation. Holiday Life 's first single, "Night", opens with a flutist backing frontman Asher Lack's piano-driven plea to spend the night. Drum brushes and Lack's croon soften the idea of [...]

Ravens & Chimes showcase the kind of urgency you usually expect to hear from folk frontmen desperately running from a broken heart and delaying the pain of unrealized expectations. Lead singer Asher Lack may share many of these same issues, but on sophomore record "Holiday Life" (out April 3rd On Better Looking Records), he handles it all with deft songwriting and a wandering curiosity that launches this record to some surprising places. Filled with sudden stops and orchestral interludes, "Holiday" is very bit a symphony as much as it is a Baroque pop classic. Like them [...]

Punk used to go on and on about destroying your idols but now that I've seen who and what they've been replaced with I'm not at all convinced. Nature detests a void. "Schemers" from Skaters "Shadow On The Stone" from Donovan Quinn [...]

This new song "Night" from New York based indie outfit Ravens & Chimes is the perfect setting for me as I write this post late in the evening. It's subtle approach to songwriting writing seems like what everyone needs when unwinding from a long day at the office. Somehow the band manages to create these soundscapes that pack a major punch with me despite the faintness that seems to pour out of every note. A new album from the band Holiday Life will arrive on April 3rd via Better Looking Records and we can only [...]

BEST OF 2011 : Songs | Albums (soon) | EPs/Singles | Discoveries/Heavy Rotation | Photos A really good year! The first 40 or so are mega-jams and the latter 38 (Rawkblog loves you, baby) are still jams. I purposefully left out songs by Destroyer because I couldn't decide, so consider Kaputt represented. You can play the entire page with the handy Ex.fm player in the bottom right corner, stream the playlist on Spotify and Rdio , and download everything after the jump. [...]
An eclectic mix of eleven tunes for the day that's in it.

Ravens & Chimes / photo by David Greenwald I won't be at CMJ this year, but here are the bands I'd see if I was. Fun jams for everyone after the jump. Hospitality : New Merge Records signees.
