[ purchase this for a good introduction to Ravi Shankar‘s music ] The headline in the New York Times read, “Ravi Shankar, Sitarist Who Introduced Indian Music to the West, Dies at 92”. All perfectly true. Shankar blasted away musical boundaries, working with classical, jazz, and pop musicians in the West, and also engaging all kinds of audiences. I could go on about his importance, but I think a personal anecdote will cover it nicely. It was the late sixties. I was the youngest of three brothers who were firm in our devotion to [...]
With 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief, the luminaries of the music world gathered once again to raise money and awareness, this time benefiting the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Held at Madison Square Garden, the nation’s premiere venue, the concert managed to generate upwards of $35 million through ticket sales and donations in a single night, making it one of the most successful benefit events of all time. The night before, in a mere matter of coincidence, Ravi Shankar, one of the men responsible for the first ever rock benefit, The Concert for Bangladesh, also held at Madison Square [...]

A great musician and human being - with talented children

The legendary sitarist, musical guide, and entrancing performer Ravi Shankar passed away on Tuesday. Nearly two years ago, I had the incredible luck of meeting Shankar at his home in Encinitas, CA. It was the first music interview I had ever been a part of, and in addition to gaining insight on interview styles from my own mentor, I was able to appreciate the sharp mind of a living legend. On that day, Shankar seemed to emit an aura that spoke volumes of his musical knowledge and experience – it is rare for an artist to maintain a musical career [...]

photo from The Sun Is Paul McCartney to play with the remaining members of Nirvana ? In a media frenzy set off by British paper The Sun the facts have become a bit obscured, but the chance that the Beatle will play with Grohl and Novoselic at a Hurricane Sandy benefit tonight at Madison Square Garden has not been ruled out. A publicist from Nasty Little Man, which represents both Grohl and McCartney, told SPIN "we can neither confirm nor deny" the reports. [ Spin [...]
You’ll have heard today that Ravi Shankar has died aged 92. Can’t claim to be any sort of a fan of his and have never really bothered to spend much time listening to his music, but a friend of mine pointed me towards this… wonderful…video. It’s spellbinding stuff which actually made me late for work this morning - I literally could not tear myself away from it. Apart from the playing, it’s a great video in itself, a bit like the Band [...]
