One of the most unfortunate injustices of life is how the things that offer the most pleasure, if only fleetingly, often do so much damage. No wonder the words "guilty" and "pleasure" get along so well. That goes double (preferably of vodka, or tequila) for drinking, a seemingly endless fountain of pleasure the night of and torturous hell the morning after. Thankfully, the simple pleasures of drinking songs are healthier, and they can continue indefinitely, as long as you want to press "repeat." Country music would dominate any list of the best ones (and where else could [...]
I'll never forgot the time I met Phil Ramone. It was on a Saturday night in 2001 at an after-party for Sarah Brightman following her concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Before my publicist friend introduced us, I never would have been able to pick Ramone out in a crowd, but I'd been familiar with his name since 1983 when I'd peruse Billboard's Hot 100 every week and see it listed as the producer of hit single after hit single from Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album. [...]

So there's this Wicked Awesome remix of No Doubt's " Don't Speak ." I just told you who its by and how good it is all at the same time. We posted his sick collab with TYR previously and would love to know what their moms put in their cereal. If the level of creativity and talent these kids have are any indication of success, I'm going to say if they keep working, they'll be up on some much bigger stages very soon. Bonus: [...]
Filed under: Exclusive , The Hit List , Music Appreciation Hulton Archive Did you know that Neil Young has only ever won two Grammy Awards ? In 2009 he scored Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package for that Neil Young Archives Vol. I (1963-1972) box set, then a year later he won Best Rock Song for "Angry World." We'll let that sink in a bit. [...]

I know what you're thinking: isn't it about time we had another Fantastic Foursome? Okay, maybe you weren't thinking that but I was, and so here we go. It's difficult to hear "Georgia On My Mind" and not think of Ray Charles, but it has actually been performed by a lot of folks since Hoagy Carmichael wrote it way back in 1930 and led his own orchestra (and sang) on its first recording. Lyrics were by Stuart Gorrell and it's said they were meant for Hoagy's sister, Georgia. However, the wording of the [...]

Cover Me counts down the best cover albums of the year. Read about them all, and listen to songs.

First, a word of explanation about the title. This is, of course, another one of those incredibly enjoyable Fantastic Foursome posts - the kind that features a song in four different versions and then gives you a chance to vote for your favorite. The second part of the title refers to my maternal grandmother, who passed away many years ago but is still remembered. Her name was Ruby, and that's the title of the song I've chosen. It was written by Heinz Eric Roemheld, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish, and was the theme song for the 1952 [...]
DJ Spence of Auckland, New Zealand remixes a classic Ray Charles song, I Got a Woman. This is one of my favorite Ray songs, so immediately I was digging it. Spence puts some cool, bouncy drums behind it and boom. Pretty good remix of a classic song.

Ray Charles' children are in a legal battle with the charitable foundation bearing their father's name. The case revolves around claims to royalties to some of Charles' biggest hits - and whether they were 'works for hire', which impacts on any termination rights. Music publishers have been awarded $6.6 million in a copyright suit against lyrics website LiveUniverse and its founder Brad Greenspan. The Radio Music Licensing Committee (RMLC) has begun [...]

Wikipedia "You Are My Sunshine" is a popular song first recorded in 1939. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana as a result of its association with former state governor and country music singer Jimmie Davis The other night dear, as I lay sleeping I dreamed I held you in my arms But when I awoke, dear, I was mistaken So I hung my head and I cried.

Today is the birthday of Ray Charles. I thought it would be nice to hear a gospel song by him on this Sunday Morning. Ray Charles @ SqueezeMyLemon Blues Blogs

I'm not sure how yesterday managed to slip my mind. That's not why I'm writing about it one day late. I did eventually get around to remembering that yesterday was September 11, and technically, when I did, it was still September 10... in New York City. That's one of the beautiful things about living in Bangkok, where it's 11 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. I can remember important days when they're nearly half over and still be pretty much ahead of everyone else back home. Unfortunately, it didn't really matter that it was [...]
Well ninjas, after a long week of an aching back, tired eyes, and a general sleepiness that never goes away, Friday is finally upon us. This isn't just any Friday. No, this is a special one. This is the type of Friday that you really look forward to, and one that only happens a few times a year. Yes, it's the ever-so-coveted Friday before a three day weekend. Now, a lot of you are probably going camping, going to a lake, or planning a BBQ. All of those options are fine, so long as you promise me one thing. Throw [...]
