I absolutely loved Lisa Hannigan 's newest, Passenger , which is out today in the UK (check out our review here ). She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us on the album process. Make sure to catch Lisa on tour ! Is there a song on 'Passenger' that you're especially proud of? I think it would be 'Little Bird'. Initially it was the most difficult to sing in front of people but I took that as perhaps being a good thing. [...]

They Might Be Giants FRIDAY, SEPT 30 They Might Be Giants finally released its new album, Join Us , after a four-year hiatus from the adult alternative scene. During that time off, the band released two children's music albums; the genre is fitting for the New York City-based band, whose musical style tends to be unadulterated, feel-good rock. They Might Be Giants' songs have unambiguous words that get straight to the point with consistently bright instrumentals. The lyrics often have heavy sentiments masked in major keys, causing them to [...]

Grammy Award-winning folk hero Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs will be at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Thursday, and we've got a chance for you to win a pair of lawn tickets. LaMontagne won the Grammy last winter for God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise as Best Contemporary Folk Album, and "Beg, Steal or Borrow" was nominated for Song of the Year. LaMontagne is notorious for both [...]

Ray Lamontagne Ray Lamontagne has three kinds of songs: sad songs, really sad songs, and excruciatingly sad songs. A few hours after his wrenching performance at the Central Park Summerstage last night, I flipped on the season premiere of The Office to see a pregnant Pam sobbing as she listens to "Trouble," the title track from his 2004 debut. (His songs have also appeared in the tearjerkers Rescue Me and Grey's Anatomy .) Lamontagne is an old-fashioned singer songwriter, the kind of acoustic strummer you might [...]

[Ray LaMontage performs with Levon Helm Band] credit: Fred Harrington Life is good 2011 wrapped up on Sunday evening in Canton, Mass. with the raspy, aching voice of Ray LaMontagne cutting through the night air and absolutely enrapturing the crowd of 10,000. His signature voice, sometimes haunting, sometimes reassuring, was pitch-perfect and filled the expansive grounds leaving festival goers with certainly one of the strongest acts of the weekend. Coming directly from the Raphael Saadiq set which literally left Prowse Farm on fire, LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs [...]

And cue the collective sigh of relief (or remorse, depending): festival season is over. Basically. With the triumphant conclusion of Arcade Fire on Friday night, the 2011 installments of the "Big Four" are officially kaput. There are a few minor festivals here and there left for fall and winter to tide us over until next April in Indio, but by and large we've seen what 2011 had to offer. We don't want to get too sentimental or take the spotlight away from Austin City Limits , but it was a hell of a year, folks. From Dave Grohl and [...]

Last year's innaugural Life Is Good Festival had a lot of good things going for it. A great location minutes south of Boston, a philanthropic mission to raise money for children in need and a strong bloodline as a Superfly production (e.g. the group that puts on a little festival called Bonnaroo). In what was probably a savvy move, the festival's debut seemed to target both the back-to-school college students as well as families with young children. Last year's lineup included some of my favorites (Dr. Dog, Mavis Staples), but overall skewed a little [...]
We threw a small end of summer bbq that went long into the night. The last few stragglers that remained into the twilight all gathered around the firepit with a drink, and we started playing my favorite game, one that I love to think I invented. It's basically giving everybody a chance to be the DJ for a song, a mix between a jukebox, and that game where you start telling a story and then the next person finishes. I love ...
TOXIC HOLOCAUST, HOLY GRAIL, KRUM BUMS, EXCRUCIATOR, DR. LOOMIS ( Branx , 320 SE 2nd) The first track on Toxic Holocaust's new record Conjure and Command is the aptly named "Judgment Awaits You." It's 1:56 of blisteringly fast early-'90s Sepultura-esque thrash—the perfect way to kickstart an extremely brutal album that makes the wrath of God seem cowardly in comparison. Proceeding tracks like the chugging, bloodthirsty "Bitch," the slow and slithering "I Am Disease," and the straight-ahead rocker "The Liars Are Burning" contain all the elements that have made thrash great over the years, yet [...]

Shelter I left you heartbroken but not until those very words were spoken Has anybody ever made such a fool out of you? It's hard to believe it But even as my eyes do see it The very things that make you live are killing you, too So listen, when all of this around us will fall over I tell [...]
"Does anybody remember critics? Honestly, in the end do you ever remember a criticism you read 20 years ago? No, you remember the music. Good or bad the music stays." -Ray LaMontagne There are two ways I can take the above quote (stolen from an old but fantastic interview Ray LaMontagne did). One way to [...]
I don't know about you, but I love a nice poetic story about the creation of an equally poetic band. Something that makes the music they present sound all the more home-grown and full of bold character. Oh Ruin, which is taken from the surname of the band's creator Eoin O'Ruainigh, are a pleasure to [...]
Ray LaMontagne returns once again to the Greek Theatre for a headlining date You can see Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs in Los Angeles when they play on Saturday, Sep. 10 at the Greek Theatre. Also joining the band...
Tweetvaso linkThinking about it, I guess I'd consider myself to be somewhat late to the Ray LaMontagne party; I got Gossip in the Grain back when it came out, and while I love LaMontagne's voice, his music is so emotionally draining to me that I can't listen to it in perpetuity. And then I hear...
Lisa Hannigan - Irish folk/pop songstress, best known (still) for the seven years she spent touring and recording with Damien Rice, follows her acclaimed, Mercury Prize-nominated debut Sea Sew with this new ten track project produced by Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry (Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint) and engineered by Ryan Freeland (Ray LaMontagne)...Hannigan says the new songs (and album title) come from the " loves, heartbreaks, confusions and friendships that we take with us through life"...Ray LaMontagne duets on the stark lament "O Sleep" // Release : Passenger (September 20, ATO)// [...]
Five good covers of 'The Weight' by The Band, including Weezer, The Gaslight Anthem, Diana Ross and the Supremes and more.
