I was thinking this morning that I never did do a "Best of..." list for either 2009 or 2010. It's a bit of a daunting task the way I do it, but in anticipation of doing that, I put together a list of 25 songs from last year that I really enjoyed, and I figured I might as well share that, six months late be damned. The rankings are rough at best, but give a general idea, and it'll be a nice preview for the album list if I ever get around to that. Because this is gonna [...]

The Mississippi River is flooding ... wait, is that a shark?!? It's been a rough few months, hasn't it? What with tornadoes rippin' up half the country, wildfires burning out of control and now the Mississippi River slithering into peoples' homes and lives, you begin to wonder what kind of plague we're going to get next. We've all but forgotten about those earthquakes/tsunami in Japan, and the earthquakes in New Zealand, which were just a couple months ago. And don't forget last year - man. On top of all that we have gasoline prices [...]

Had plans for a lengthier post this morning before being caught up in Sunday night's big news . Here's what I had written before the news broke... *** ...And let's start this post off with some live music from Brandi Carlile. Carlile's new CD, Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony comes out tomorrow, and is currently streaming over at Paste's website . Better hurry if you want to hear it... these things tend to go [...]

This was a pretty good year for recorded music, in the form of albums and in digital form. Rock artists came back with a vengeance, producing strong music and worthy albums. Any number of indie bands offered up career-defining work, which makes the future look pretty healthy indeed. The big news on the digital front was, uh, the Beatles on iTunes, and in just their first week on the download service they sold about 2 million songs. Paul McCartney, now the keeper of the Beatles' flame, appeared on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend and performed five songs [...]

If you've been reading lately, then you know that the Americana Music Honors and Awards Show is taking place tonight at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville, TN. I've covered the nominees in a few of the major awards so far. This post is just to wrap up every other category and give you an overview of the rest of the awards. The award show will be broadcast live on Sirius/XM Radio's Outlaw Country Channel and webcast live by NPR Music and Folk Alley beginning at 6:30 Central Time. [...]

For me, this is the biggest award of the night. Call me old fashioned, but I still believe that the album is the highest form of artistic expression for an artist. Even as it seems many artists and record labels are focusing more and more on singles these days, I'll always take a great album over a great single. I also find it very telling about the Americana Music Association as a whole that their radio airplay charts are based on album spins rather than airplay for specific singles. How many other charts do that? [...]

I have always love road trips and from a very young age loved sitting in the back of the old station wagon in that flip up rear seat, facing traffic and digging whatever 8 tracks my dad would put in. I have a lot of good memories involving driving around Texas aimlessly with my best friend, trying to get lost but never managing it or driving three hours to just to prove to someone that some hole in the wall had the best BBQ. The spontaneous road trip was a staple of my life for a lot of years. It's [...]

I was given this idea via the 9B readership and I thought it would be a fun one to do. This weeks Top 5 goes out to all those with a following so obnoxious/weird/what have you that there's nothing you can do but avoid them. Yes, your Top 5: Dude, what's the fucking deal with your fans. Have fun with it and don't take it seriously enough to get offended by it ! For my list, I am gonna color outside of the musical line that largely defines the site. So here goes [...]

This is the first of what I hope will be three our four 9b compilations a year. Between AIV and myself we picked one song from each album currently on the Essential Listening list and put them together for our loyal readers. I like to think of this as one way we can say "Thank you!" to our readers and to the community 'round these parts. I suppose I could type out a lot of words that may mean something or may not like I usually do but this time I figure it's all about the music... [...]
We had a spectacular Wednesday night for live music in March. It's happening again this week. Thursday night's line-up is loaded with great live music to see in Atlanta. As far as we know, tickets are still available for all shows. Josh Ritter will be at the Variety Playhouse. His bride and [...]
