Ray Wylie Hubbard: Name Droppin' [ purchase ] Here's a good old fashioned country-blues stomp courtesy of Ray Wylie Hubbard . In this song Hubbard introduces us to some Austin music luminaries... namely Jon Dee Graham , Darcy Deaville , Scrappy Jud Newcomb , Mary Gauthier , and Mambo John Treanor . Jon Dee Graham and Mary Gauthier are two of my favorites, but I'll admit to not being overly familiar with the others. I've been doing [...]

You could say this about all my feature posts, but it's been way too long since I've done an In The Toolbox . This is the recurring post theme that explores an 'essential' album chosen from my handy toolbox full of CD's. I've extended this privilege to any of my vinyls that I keep in my sturdy Eurolite carrying case (both seen above). To get things going again with this feature, I'm offering up two gems today. These discs come from a couple of Texas' best songwriters and both were the album [...]

Hailed in the press as the elder statesman of Texas music Ray Wylie Hubbard has been pickin' guitars and writin' songs for longer than I have been alive. Most of you probably know his work through Jerry Jeff Walker who made Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother famous back in 1973. With fourteen albums under his belt and almost forty years in country music industry Ray Wylie is the real deal. He has lived his music and was a sodden drunk until sometime in 1987 when he credits another Texas great: Stevie Ray [...]
So I was sitting around work yesterday sort of getting work done when Autopsy IV asked if I would consider being a contributor for 9b. Yeah, like that was going to take any consideration at all! So I played it cool and took about five minutes before answering and here I am. I figure most of you have seen my guest posts and the recent intro mixes that AIV has so kindly posted but probably have very little idea who the hell I am. I am an old Lucero message board hand who has been reading 9b since [...]

Last week my band, Orange Is In , was recording drums for our latest project at Rogers Recording in Houston when I stumbled upon some cool information about our engineer Steve Christensen. Steve has worked with Destiny's Child, Jermaine Dupri, Ray Wylie Hubbard and countless others who have past through Houston's legendary Sugar Hill Studios . He also worked on our first two records and is not only a great engineer, but also a great guy. During a break, we decided to go to Antone's Famous Po' Boys to pick up [...]

Hubbard's on the Old Settler's bill.A lot of you may be asking yourself--just as I just asked myself--what in hell's name an Old Settler's Music Festival is. But before getting dismissive about anythi... Continue reading "Line Up Announced for Austin's 22nd Annual Old Settler's Music Festival" >

"Who would win in a fight? Lemmy or God. Trick question: Lemmy is God." And there'll be lots of T-shirts out tonight proving as much. Kinda an interesting weekend this time around: Big on the big names and kinda light on the smaller end of things. Here are the ones we already told you about... Tonight, there's the Toadies show at the Palladium (with Riverboat Gamblers , The Crash That Took Me and Dead Twins ) , and the [...]

Ray Wylie Hubbard: Conversation With The Devil [ purchase ] The "Dark Knight" of the Texas Music scene is never more in his element than when he's singin' about the afterlife. Known for his prophetic, mysterious stories, Ray Wylie Hubbard creates some of the most image-inducing music around. Songs like Purgatory Road, Bones, The Way of the Fallen, Resurrection, and – of course – This Mornin' I Am Born Again , often filled with slides and dobros, are just a few of his fatalistic pieces. [...]

It's almost been a week since my last post. i've been back and forth between here and there. Mostly i've been back home letting my mother take care of me cause i just got my wisdom teeth yanked out of my face. i'm really not in too much pain (i ain't skimpin' on the hydrocodone, though); the worst part is......... i'm hungry as shit. i'm tired of soup and jello. So to end this blogging hiatus and to make me even hungrier, here are some good food-related tunes: [...]

Time for another Playlist Pulse . This time from the one titled grooves . These are simply those songs that make you tap you boots, drum on the desk, or just bob a head. Whether it's the plunk of a banjo, the beat of a tom, or the groove initiated by a plugged in guitar, it's hard not to move to these songs: 1. mp3: The Be Good Tanyas - Rain & Snow [...]

Sigh.......... Kasey Chambers. What can i say? i think i fell in love even before i saw a picture of her. That somewhat squeaky, almost childlike, but damn sexy voice pulled me in. So i was pretty excited to find out that 1) she was gorgeous enough to match her voice and 2) she can write/make some amazing alt-country music. Just as a fair warning, this post will contain more pictures than most simply because i like to look at her. [...]
and a light shines on my land i no longer look for heaven in your deathly, distant land i do not want your pearly gates don't want your streets of gold This mornin' i was born again and a light shines on my soul This mornin' i was born again, i was born again complete i stood up above my troubles and i stand on my two feet My hand it feels unlimited, my body feels like the sky i feel at home in the universe where yonder planets fly This mornin' i was born again, [...]
