A highly anticipated new release from Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer is starting to make the rounds, and though it's only early February, we're going to go out on a limb and declare Child Ballads an early contender for best tradfolk album of the year. And we're clearly not going to be alone, either: with 6 weeks left to its March 19th US release date, the seven track album has already garnered high and well-deserved praise from Pitchfork, and a full-page feature in today's edition of The Sun seems a harbinger of loud and voluminious [...]
Longtime stringband member Rayna Gellert has struck out on her own with a debut solo album, Old Light: Songs from My Childhood and Other Gone Worlds. The daughter of notable traditional fiddle and banjo performer Dan Gellert, the younger is a classically trained violinist who has been a staple on the contemporary roots scene, playing in bands Freight Hoppers and Uncle Earl and backing-up musicians such as Robyn Hitchcock and Loudon Wainwright III . The set of ten songs is comprised of traditionals and a few originals, and while Gellert is known for her fiddle work, here she primarily [...]

It’s coming on 2013, and for weeks, otherbloggers and tastemakers have been touting their 2012 picks, jostling to be the best and first match for your own preferences, inviting debate over position in the ranks. The song opens her debut album and is available as a free, legal mp3 download for a limited time from NPR's Heavy Rotation. Gellert is known as a fiddle-player, but has [...]

At this point in time many variables have to come togehter for me to bother to do a post on here. The key one is of course the quality of the music but lesser variables include the amount of coverage an artist has already garnered, the production of the track (I'm drawn more than ever to a lofi sound) and simply the time I have to devote to this blog. Reyna Gellert's new record Old Light easily clears all my self imposed hurdles. You'll know Rayna Gellert if you are [...]

Parmi les artistes réunis sur Face A Frowning World: An E.C. Ball Memorial Album (
