‘ Calling Out Your Name ’, released on Bandcamp on the 10th June ahead of the release of second album Murmurations , is the latest track from Oxfordshire-based American indie/folk band, The Epstein . The three-piece, made up of founding members Olly Wills and Jon Berry, and The Keyboard Choir’s Sebastian Reynolds, not unlike a masculine and unique version of The Staves, have brought us yet another sensitive and spectacular four minutes of folk rock piquancy. The beautifully lonely vocals that open the track, accompanied by quiet and solitary jangling guitar riffs, [...]

Waxahatchee | Cerulean Salt by Tom Johnson In the build-up to the one scene in Garden State that's it's still OK for a twenty-eight year old to love - you know, the bit where Natalie Portman tap-dances in front of the fire while Fair by Remy Zero plays (oh shoosh) - her character talks about about people being "in it" , which, she goes on to add, is something her mum says when someone is completely lost in the moment when telling a story that really [...]

Fruitless Pursuits just published this great interview with me about my tour, my new book and my Kickstarter project that turned out anything but a fruitless pursuit. Read the whole interview here! Check out the Kickstarter and pre-order your book and album here!
The morning has been a busy one already. I woke so early I was able to read both papers, do another load of laundry, make my bed and go out for breakfast. When I got home, I found, to my dismay, my tranquility had disappeared and been replaced by the sounds of workmen next door who are taking down the old shingles. Hammering on the new will be next. The house certainly did need a face life. Nothing has been done to it since it was built. The house is a summer rental, and upkeep is not a priority. I [...]

City and Colour | The Hurry and The Harm by Katie Malcolmson Over the past two City and Colour albums, Dallas Green (once a pivotal member of the now departed post hardcore band, Alexisonfire) has made the transition from City and Colour ‘the side project’ to City and Colour; the touring, writing and recording full band (with drums and guitar solos and everything). It’s an obvious observation that Dallas’ latest offering, Hurry and the Harm is the sound of a musician maturing, from a guy that used to [...]

The names alone surrounding Reading four-piece Tripwires are pretty impressive. Their debut album, Spacehopper , will be released via Frenchkiss Records, home to Bloc Party and Local Natives to name but a few. It was produced by Nicholas Verhnes, who has previously twiddled the knobs (stop it right now) for Animal Collective and Deerhunter. You can see why too. Because they are RAD. New single, 'Shimmer', has a sliver of Peace about it, mixed with just a punch of early Muse, and comes out of the blocks like a freight train, whipping itself up into a cyclone [...]

Interview | Benin City by Lee Adcock For nearly a year, the London collective of Benin City have deliberately shrouded themselves in mystery. With the release of ' Faithless' , however, the band have finally unveiled themselves – Joshua Idehen spins rhymes, Tom Leaper mans the synths and saxes, and Theo Buckingham handles the drums. Their debut LP, Fires In The Park (via Audio Doughnuts), fuses a multitude of genres - including hip hop, electronica, drum n’ bass, jazz and [...]
Given the sepia hues adorning the above artwork and so too its slight, iconic typography you'd be forgiven for thinking that Trent Reznor may have taken a turn for the perverse and reverted to the vortices of self-degradation to have whirred around Nine Inch Nails' tour de force, The Downward Spiral . Well, Came Back Haunted ain't exactly all industrial doom nor clanging gloom, and alternatively begins as though a spooked techno stonker à la Yazoo-cum-early Depeche Mode redux. It's accomplished and so too compelling to the extent whereby Vince Clarke himself would quite conceivably put his name [...]

Fault Lines | Tapes and Wires by Rosie Ramsden One of the year’s most explosive and hard-hitting garage-pop album, Tapes and Wires , is here, and strikes with enough lo-fi rawness and echoing guitar riffs to last a life time. And then some. Brought to us by Fault Lines , a four-piece hailing from Portland, Oregon, this debut successfully manages to combine tumultuous attitude and an unpolished, grungy sound, with hard-to-shake hooks and catchy melodies; that’s no easy feat, and aside from equally [...]

Marking the bands first proper release since their debut 2012 EP, Ocean Beach, the British/Swedish duo Treasureseason will release a new AA-sided 73 on June 24th via COJA Records . We shared a free download from the band with you last week, the blissful Puget Sound , and we're now very please to premiere Don't Hold Back - one of half of the bands new single. A more urgent and pressing track than Puget Sound, Don't Hold Back propels itself forward on bright synth lines, [...]
Last night Gracie went out about 11 for her last visit to the yard before bed. When she came in, we went upstairs. I saw something out of the corner of my eye, light I thought, but I looked outside and saw nothing so I got comfy in bed to read. All of a sudden the loudest clap of thunder rattled the windows and went on forever. The rain came next, heavy rain, and then more thunder as loud and long as the first. I figured it was lightning I'd seen out of the corner of my eye, a warning [...]

Little hints of influences continuously creep in and out of Men's Adventures brilliant Bad Feelings single , guiding and shaping the track along it's three-and-a-half minutes. The laid-back breeze of surf rock here, a touch of psychedelia there and a cinematic sheen to the whole thing that drives the track along. The song is taken from the bands forthcoming debut EP Solitary Trip (June 24th/Dirty Bingo Records) and we liked it so much we wanted to know more. The bands core members, Alfie and Jimmy, took the time to tell us some more... [...]

In just under three-minutes, Aurora , the new single from A Grave With No Name does exactly what you want the lead track from a new album to do. It prickles the skin, fucks a little with your senses, then leaves you craving for more. And more is what we'll get when Whirlpool is released on July 1st via Stare Records . But for now, all we have is this. Featuring Anna McArdle (Ides, Joanna Gruesome) on guest vocals, Aurora crawls along on a subtle and focused bassline that feels [...]

...Like Clockwork // Queens of the Stone Age By Mark Robinson See, the inherit issue with creating two of the finest hard rock albums of the 21st century, is trying to top the bastards. It’s an issue that Josh Homme has attempted to overcome; firstly with 2005’s sprawling but inconsistent Lullabies to Paralyze , and then again with 2007’s Era Vulgaris , which – while patchy – was a tighter, more focused affair. But there’s always felt like something was lost when QOTSA parted ways [...]

Daft Punk | Random Access Memories Words by Ron Jurewicz In April, an emo band called Fall Out Boy came out of a five year hiatus to save rock and roll. The world still isn’t quite sure how to thank them, but I think an absurd, ironic punishment along the lines of tying their hands to their legs, pushing a boulder down a hill towards their loved ones and saying ‘Now Fall Out Boy, save rock, and roll’, should do nicely. When Daft Punk [...]

Aaaah! I'm back after a nice relaxing vacation and ready to get on the horse that is gigging again! I've just moved to Berlin, Germany, and will be touring in Europe for a while now. (Don't worry, I'll be back in the US before you know it) I've got two shows in Berlin in June and would love to see all my fellow Berliners there! The first one is at St. Gaudy Café on June 6th and the second one is at Playing With Eels on June 21st. More info about both shows [...]

On July 18 Frenchkiss Records will release Tripwires debut record ‘ Spacehopper ’ featuring their latest single ‘ Shimmer ’. The Reading UK four piece bust out a guitar solo (of sorts) on this one – kudos! From the Nirvana-esque breakdown and the early Radiohead references, its pretty clear what these guys listened to in school! Not that that's a bad thing. If you missed the lead track ‘ Catherine, I Feel Sick ’, take a listen right here . Tripwires – ‘Shimmer’ [...]

It's been some year for Deap Vally . Breaking out out of the LA rock scene is hard enough, but doing it as effortlessly as they have, takes something a little bit special. Formed in 2011 after meeting at a needlework class, Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards soon began making music together and have barely looked back since releasing their debut single back in the Summer of 2012. Debut appearances in the UK and Japan, and shows with heavyweights such as the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Muse has cemented their reputation [...]
