North Coast Music Festival , arguably the third largest and most popular Chicago fest following Lollapalooza and Pitchfork Music Fest, announced it's initial lineup earlier this week. The festival goes down in Union Park - the same park Pitchfork will take over a few weeks earlier - on Labor Day weekend, which is Friday, August 31, through Sunday, September 2. The lineup was revealed via a Groupon on early Tuesday morning that offered a three-day pass for only $62 and promptly sold out. Past lineups have leaned more towards [...]

In support of their new release City of Sound The Revivalists continue their first date with the west coast this Wednesday, April 4 at Star Theater. You may have never heard of The Revivalists, but if you could picture the marriage of New Orleans soul with a rock aggression, you'd come pretty close to capturing what is quintessentially the Big Easy sound. Or at least it should be. Incorporating pedal steel guitar and saxophone alongside the more typical bass, [...]

Rebirth Brass Band: Ain't No Shame In My Game
In the last six months, no local venue has made a larger effort to break into a higher echelon of rock club status than hidden-in-plain-sight Garden District standby Cafe Prytania . More frequent, consistent and eclectic booking in the back half of 2011 slowly but surely elevated the humble establishment from occasional Loyola-band hotspot to a dependable destination to catch up-and-coming local, regional and even nationally touring talent. The only downside to Cafe P's rising profile was the unfortunate way the larger, more frenzied crowds brought the shortcomings of the bar's unusual layout into sharper focus, as [...]

Galactic was the band everyone came to see and the room was expectedly packed with people. I was lucky enough to have my buddy Brent in attendance, and he brought his audio recording equipment. We used my new clamp to mount his video camera to his mic stand, allowing us to have two HD video cameras running for the entire performance. On top of that, I shot a few videos near the front with my iphone4. Three cameras + Galactic's light show = !!!

A lot of artists have covered the old crooner tune, "Exactly Like You" - Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, to name a few. Rebirth Brass Band kicks off their latest album, Rebirth of New Orleans, with it. It's a perfect fit. Anyone who's been to the Big Easy has probably heard this sort of tune in any of the top bars or clubs in the French Quarter - that is, good old fashioned standards fronted by a serviceable, solid singer and backed by a brass band whose caliber you probably won't find anywhere else in the world. [...]
