Looking for something to do after cramming your belly with a delicious holiday meal? " Look, check it out, Lisa! You can tell the exact moment when his heart rips in half! " - Bart Spanning four and a half decades (1963-2009) and nine genres, here's my bitterness playlist. I originally had to cut this playlist down from 60+ songs. Not all of these songs are bitter; some are classics that will rip your heart out like poor Ralphy Wiggum up above. Love songs? Puuulleeeeaase. There's a lot of heartache in music, which is why we love it. Playlist 1. 13th Floor Elevators - [...]
Fans of Austin's great alt-country act Reckless Kelly may remember my story that appeared in the print edition last month--y'know the one where I mentioned the band's CD release party which was ... Continue reading "Reckless Kelly Reschedules Dallas CD Release Show For Next Week" >
I got my hands on a copy of Reckless Kelly's new album Somewhere in Time last night. The album is a tribute to the music of a songwriter by the name of Pinto Bennett from a band called The Famous Motel Cowboys. I haven't had time to listen to the full album yet, but I like what I'm hearing so far. Here's the EPK for the album where the guys tell us all about Pinto Bennett and the tribute project.

Headed out overnight for another New Year's ski trip. Destination: Beaver Creek - my absolute favorite place to ski. Looks like my Top 50 Songs of 2009 will have to wait 'til 2010.... wow that's strange to type. If I find some time during the trip, I'll begin another set of Download Code Contests. I've got 3 album downloads available from my Top 10 this year: JTE's Midnight at the Movies , Deer Tick's Born On Flag Day , and Conor Oberst's Outer South . Be sure to check back for those. For [...]

Time to take one final look at the nominees for this year's Americana Music Awards. We've tackled Best New & Emerging Artist, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year (as I type this, it looks like Alejandro Escovedo is your pick for best album)... now it's time to take a look at everything else. We'll start with the nominees for Instrumentalist of the Year... Sam Bush, Buddy Miller, Gurf Morlix, and Jerry Douglas. We've already discussed Buddy a couple of times due to his nominations for Album and Song of the Year, and I'll [...]

Looks like it's a little sparse out there for what I see for listed concerts for the weekend, Dallasites and/or Ft. Worthies, but find events for the weekend with links to purchase tickets after the jump. If you know of anything that I missed, add it into the comments because I'm drawing 7-2s offsuit. Or maybe the phrase i'm looking for is "drawing blanks?" Thursday, May 7 Centro-Matic @ Granada Theater Jack Ingram, Reckless Kelly, Boys Named Sue @ HOB [...]

So I'm in a great mood. Spring is in the air. The cherry blossoms are out. Those so familiar voices are coming out of that cheap little transistor in the kitchen telling me what's going on in the ballpark. My Giants win their home opener, small thanks to our Cy Young winner (that was a little scary, no?). And to top off the afternoon my son pitched well in his little league game. Great way to start the regular season. So why not some baseball tunes? America's Favorite Pastime - Todd Snider [...]

Hey Steve Earle fans, watch Letterman tomorrow night (Friday, Sept. 5th). Steve will perform a Warren Zevon tune, "Reconsider Me", in tribute to the late great Zevon who passed away 5 years ago (Sept. 7th, 2003). I didn't know it until tonight, but Earle recorded the song ( hear it on YouTube ) with Texas band Reckless Kelly for a 2004 tribute album, 'Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon'... I haven't posted this one [...]

Made a much-needed labor day weekend trip down to the river in New Braunfels. i can't quite explain it, but that part of Texas has a way of life all its own. Laid back folks, great food, lots of beer, and there's a beautiful river that maintains a year-round 72 degree temperature. Music, specifically Texas Music , lies at the heart of the Texas hill-country culture, helping to reinforce that everyone's family , buy me a beer feeling. Though i'm not into the scene like i [...]

No, even though i have been talkin' a little about books lately, this post is not about the Cormac McCarthy novel. There are countless songs that have been written about/inspired by that mixture of gravel, cement, and tar we like to call The Road . Rather than save it for last, i'm gonna start with the song that inspired this post. It could be construed as too literal, but Jerry Jeff was best at being blunt. [...]

Most of the music that's recently been added to my library has actually been older stuff (thanks to the folks at Cover Lay Down , Setting The Woods On Fire , and Ceci N'est Pas un Blog ) - Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Creedence, Emmylou........ i have, however, picked up a couple new discs - some in the mail and some digitally. Here's some of the best new additions: mp3: [...]

i've just about finished going through the hundreds of pictures taken while in Costa Rica. If you like a laid-back place with lots to do, and some of the most amazing scenery - get your ass to Costa Rica. The locals are super-friendly, everyone accepts the American dollar, cabs and vans are cheap and plentiful, and - according to our driver, César - every town, no matter how small, has at least one bar, and one soccer field. They got their priorities lined up down there. So to show off my newfound hobby of photography [...]
i don't normally talk about movies here at This Mornin'..... but why not shake things up a bit? i'm workin' on a new computer and just revamped some graphics and colors on my page (new comp has Photoshop, so expect me to go a little crazy getting to know how to use it). Tonight i came across something that really interested me. For the first time since Heat (1995) Al Pacino and Robert De Niro will co-star in a movie. [...]

Ah, after a couple grueling weeks, i finally get to sit back and relax for a night. And there's no better way to do that than with some easy listening - not the genre - but the true definition of easy listening - pure instrumental music . i haven't done one of these since my first week of blogging. i was listening to Cold Roses today, and thought to myself that i would dig that album [...]

There's just something about me and Texas music. Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Old 97's, the Reverend Horton Heat, Jerry Jeff Walker, Blaze Foley, Joe Ely, etc. etc... some damn fine music has its roots in that big ol' state. There are two music meccas I have yet to visit, but one day certainly will: New Orleans and Austin, Texas. Since the late 90's, Reckless Kelly has been one of the greatest roots rockin' Austin bands around. Reckless Kelly is made up of brothers Willy and Cody Braun, David Abeyta, Jimmy McFeeley, and Jay Nazz. Willy and [...]
