![[Introducing] – PONCHOS](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4030216_lg.jpg)
Tweet Judging by his music, Boston-via-Chicago based musician PONCHOS is a man of many moods. The project, for now, is a one-man-show, James Krivchenia, a 23 year-old whose first encounter with music was playing drums in the 4 th grade. Since then, he's been in numerous bands and has worked mixing and producing different records. His latest project is the “Rawness” EP , which he put out last November and is free to download on his Bandcamp . Just within [...]

‘Territories’, the debut album by Red Horses of The Snow, is the inaugural release on Flashback Records, the new label set up by the renowned North London record store. Red Horses of The Snow is a collaboration between visual artist/musician Chris Hawtin and musician/producer Mark Burgess. Following a self-released demo EP in 2009, ‘Territories’ is the culmination of two years work, where the Red Horses examined and improved every area of their sound, the ethos being that no part of the project could be just ok, it had to be excellent. [...]

The cover art for Territories makes it look like the sort of CD both sold and played on an infinite loop in New Age shops. This is important. All supporting literature - online biographies, press releases, and such - make a point of referring to the duo as a "studio-based" band. This is also important. All of the signs you pass on the way to actually listening to Red Horses of the Snow suggest that they would be much loved by the Radio 2, Q- and possibly MOJO-reading crowd. Not necessarily [...]

secondo disco per #Type del duo Red Horse (il percussionista Eli Keszler ed il chitarrista Steve Pyne) - mix di cacofonie e improvvisazioni jazz-noise- everything davvero ispirate e di grande ispirazione. da sottolineare sulla pagina web dell’etichetta inglese il consiglio “just make sure you listen loud, there’s a lot to hear”.
The new Red Horse album is a little front-loaded, but it still showcases some pretty intriguing noise and free improvisational sounds. WATCH THE REVIEW
Red Horse is an intense improvisational noise duo. They're made up of percussionist Eli Keszler and guitarist Steve Pyne. The five tracks they've pulled together on this debut album are pretty fantastic. They highlight everything I love about noise, live instrumentation, and improvisation. The music here ranges from intriguing to deeply disturbing. Sometimes, the sounds feel like they're reaching right into my ear canal and attempting to remove my brain. I'm sure we've all run across noise music like this, but the improvisational-almost jazzy, really-elements here really keep me locked into what's going on. Keszler's [...]

(Type Records, 2011) There are moments when, simply through the act of hearing a specific thing for the first time, one can initiate and monitor an acute sense particle realignment wherein one's brain matter is reconfigured in order to process experiences similar to the following experiences: sound alignments arranged as starving, carnivorous animals sounds with the propensity to drink up all the earth's oceans, lakes and seas sounds backbroken to goad electricity, out of sympathy, improperly through a listener's heart and lungs etc. And the opportunity isn't often. Comes around maybe [...]
I'm going to let you in on a secret. The best album of 2011 consists mostly of live solo performances on bass saxophone. The secret to the success of New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges lies in the way it was recorded. 24 microphones were used, each capturing a different element of Stetson's remarkable range of techniques: the rattle of the reed, the percussive tapping of the keys, or the harmonic overflow of the entire instrument vibrating. It's like he's got an entire band in there with him. If that wasn't enough, there's [...]
Colin Stetson | Red Horse (Judge II) & In love and in Justice

Red Horse is the blistering free-post-everything project of drummer/multi-percussionist Eli Keszler and guitarist/mad-scientist Steve Pyne. While both musicians are active in a number of different projects (you probably wouldn't believe Pyne's day job even if we told you), Red Horse catches them working with a distilled sense of focus and is for many their breakthrough project. They ran the last trucks through Paradise Lake Road last night, their claws clutching desperately at the piles of brush and branches which have covered the curbsides and yards since the month began. The high school seniors who worked so tirelessly to bring hope and helping hands to shellshocked neighborhoods the morning after their graduation did not happen begin to move on, visiting colleges, taking off for the summer. The church with the fallen clocktower posts daily on our facebook page, its requests sounding evermore desperate as it struggles to find enough volunteers to keep the momentum going. [...]
Regular readers know: Falcon Ridge Folk Festival is my home away from home, my happy place. An oasis amidst lush green farmland, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of Hillsdale, NY, its four stages, dance tents, camping areas and vast vendor zones rise from the mist each summer to take over the alfalfa fields of Dodd's Farm, where they serve as much as 15,000 visitors with a cornucopia of music, food, fun and friendship. This will be our fourteenth year volunteering at Falcon Ridge. In that time, my wife and I, [...]

When I saw Calin Stetson's Take Away Show , I knew I had to give this album a listen. New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is a mix of drone baritone sax, high pitched squeaks and sounds you would never think can be created with a saxophone (See "Judges" and listen to the percussion which supposedly was created by manipulating the saxophone keys). When listening to this song, I had a moment similar to the one where I heard Rahzel for the first time. But instead of being like, "Woah singing and beat boxing at [...]

Colin Stetson - Red Horse (Judges II) (mp3) from New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges (out Feb 22)

Red Horse: Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky - photo: Dan Corrigan Folk artists Eliza Gilkyson , John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky teamed to record each other songs and a couple of choice covers, including Neil Young's I Am A Child . Operating under the Red Horse banner the resulting self-titled album is a dead ringer for Best of 2011 lists. It's a rare treat to assemble three fiercely independent buys artist in the same room. There are no song that [...]

Root Hill Cafe, Brooklyn [Today we're thrilled to have a guest Top 5 dispatch from Park Slope, which may have more coffee shops per capita than any neighborhood in New York. And as our spiritual advisor Chris Landriau shows, the music at these cafés is both more and less than it seems.] Most Brooklyn cafés carefully cultivate their aesthetic. Consider Root Hill ’s repurposed barn-wood floors and local foods, Tea Lounge ’s Turkish fans and Yerba Matte gourds, Blue [...]
Consider this one of those road-less-traveled editions of WSIBTW, wherein we assume you've already got a pretty good bead on the most blogged-about new releases for this week (in this case we're talking School Of Seven Bells, Ice Cube, M.I.A., etc.) and we fill you in on some of the less frequently trod corners of the musical universe instead. This time around, we seem to find ourselves digging into a more consistently rootsy bag than usual, but hell, it's just too hot this time of year for headbanging, isn't it? [...]

As predicted, it's been a strong year for tributes and cover compilations; here we are only halfway into summer, and already we're looking at our third feature post on the topic. Cover albums can go either way, of course - as can any cover - but there's plenty of cream in this particular crop: the coverlover's bread and butter is a fattening bounty, and we're thrilled once again to bring you the newest and most noteworthy from all corners of the folkworld. New folk supergroup [...]

I was looking into some Greg Brown tour dates yesterday. In case you don't know, Greg and friend Bob Feldman started Red House Records years ago. While on the Red House website I saw the news about a new folk super group: Red Horse. Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky make up said group. Their self-titled debut drops next month. If you are a fan of folk music, you haveta keep this on your radar. Pre-orders start 7/6/10. Listen: Red Horse ∞ Don't Mind Me
