Dear friends, 1. Song dedication, part one My friend Marta aka Marts is, to use her own words, a funny kid. She's perpetually amused by the antics of her friends. A chortler by nature; punching you lightly on the arm, rubbing the punch spot and saying "Aaaaw." She's also one of those people that gets lost in listening to others; she squints her eyes and nods slowly in time to some secret music she hears in what you're saying. This makes sense. She's a fine musician and part [...]

Blondes week is over. Non-fiction week begins! I Do Not Outwardly Share This Affliction by Andrew Zornoza My grandfather died in August of 2005. I flew right out there (to Spain) because in that country the body can be interred for no more than two days. I have heard it is the same in Italy. My grandfather was a Brigadier General in the Spanish Air Force. He looked tremendously like Picasso, though his stare had [...]

This is a day to be thankful for family, for friends, and for all the wonders of this earth. From us to you: best wishes for a peaceful day. Red House Painters: Have You Forgotten Glen Phillips: Released Josh Rouse: Quiet Town Mark Kozelek: Around and Around (a capella) Leo Kottke: Accordion Bells
There was a time in my life when I love Red House Painters. A time when I was a crotchety teenager obsessed with long, depressing songs. Mark Kozelek excels at writing these types of songs, whether with his old band (Red House Painters) or his current band (Sun Kil Moon). He is also prone to release a solo album from time to time. Of course, his solo work sounds much like his band output. So

“River" by Red House Painters which clocks in at 11:20 EAR FARM's 8+ is a weekly look at songs longer than eight minutes. Each week, new song. There are no rules or guidelines here other than that I won't allow live versions of songs to be featured. Beyond that, it's anything goes. From recounting dreams to pop quizzes , from faux screenplays to personal stories galore ...you get it all here in 8+ land. [...]

Last sunday we all turned back the clock one hour and suddenly you get a change of mood. It gets colder, darker and perhaps more lazy. No, come to think of it, I was lazy all the time... Still, the change is here but it's not all bad because this is the time of year when I rediscover the beautiful music styles in the form of sadcore or melancolica... well, introvert stuff. So instead of whining over the summer that's gone, greet this dark season by listening to this eclectic sample of some of sadcore rocks finest: [...]
ROGER O’DONNELL’S MOOG MUSIC I received a Roger O'Donnell CD in the mail about two weeks ago. I popped it in, listened, and said to myself, “Hm?†It’s different. Very different from what I’m usually sent, very different from what I usually listen to. For one thing, it’s instrumental. For another, it’s mellow electronic music. At first, I wanted to write it off as the ’06 version of New Age, but I gave it another try. And then another. It [...]

(Mark Kozelek by Steve Rhodes ) Compilations. A tough one. Obviously, great way to discover some great music, also a great way to ignore some slow-burners. Enraptured with 4AD's 25th anniversary events last Autumn, I listened eagerly to the 1980 Forward album: just look at the tracklisting, you see how I could gloss over some of the less-known (to me) artists when there's Throwing Muses, Belly, Pixies, The Birthday Party, TV On The Radio, Cocteau Twins... Easily done. So praise be to the random play all of yesterday , for later [...]
While I realize that once again, this post is a few weeks late, I want to put up some songs that to me, fit the end of summer. Depending on where you live, you may have one, two, three, or four seasons. Here in Los Angeles , I would say you only have two; summer and winter (even though it’s hard to call winter that when it’s 75 degrees out). I really consider fall the end of summer rather than it’s own distinct season since it’s [...]
The next installment in our almost weekly series of musical synopses focussing on nothing in particular. I usually do this on Friday, but this week feels like it may not actually have a Friday, so here it is just in case. The Walkmen - Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is ...

Hall & Oates: "I'm Sorry" (download) Red House Painters: "I'm Sorry (John Denver Cover)" (download) I'm going to go back through my entries to add Technorati tags and category tags to each one. I apologize in advance if this screws things up for those of you who are reading T-Sides through feeds. For those of you who don't, however, it should improve your T-Sides reading experience. Or at least that's my intent.
My grandparents met in 1925 on the first day of school. My grandma was a junior, my grandfather a sophomore. It’s one of those storybook romances that you hear about; boy meets girls, wants girl, gets girl, loses girl, and finally makes it up to her. But in talking to my grandmother and recalling the endless amount of times I have listened to her throbbing heart of a story, she never ceases to

Perfection. And a field a photo resonates in passing. As orchids numerate, [square land] setting stems writhe into lyrics, moving pictures. Abstraction undermines an eye’s permission to clash detail branching vegetation, harmonial inheritance. A petal fuses the fringed purple breaths, [...]
My lovely lady friend and i are headin' west to the city of angels for a week or so, so I (probably) won't get a chance to update. Planned trip highlights include: a) seeing the Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Zach Galifinakis, Bob Odenkirk, et. al. show, at the Troubador tomorrow night, b) Amoeba Records, c) drinks at the Dresden, d) and meeting the waiter from Chuck Klosterman's hypothetical movie script, which I anticipate, will not be hard at all. Two L.A. songs, including my favorite Kozelek track. [...]

This summer is going by with the quickness. It's hard for me to believe that the event I've been basing the whole summer on -- next weekend's Lollapalooza concert in Chicago -- is just around the corner. Since it's the only real vacation I've planned, it kind of bums me out that, considering how fast the rest of this season has gone by, it will soon be over. I have mixed emotions about summer. While I have great memories of family road trips to the East Coast and endless days at Elmwood Pool in [...]

Photo by Filip Hnizdo Thought I'd put up the whole Koz show I started posting the other day. If you don't know Mark Kozelek , he's the singer/songwriter behind Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. His voice is, quite simply, majestic. Like most singers, he sounds even better live. This is a show from 2000, back in the RHP days. If anyone has a more recent show (I saw him in Los Angeles in 2003) or knows where to find them, [...]
You'd think I was posting NIN or Pavement side-projects or something Burd Early - "Phonecall Away": mp3 I would call this one "atmospholk," except that coining my own genre didn't take off that well. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I've used it on far too many mix tapes - slow, wistful, uses 6th chords, completely beautiful, etc. The album, Leveler , is nearly as good. Look for a post on this guy's more recent stuff next week. [...]
