The tunes playing on Radio 6 this morning in tongue-in-cheek honour of National Goth Day made us all nostalgic for our very own black and purple tinged youth, when Wayne Hussey and Andrew Eldritch ruled the airwaves (sort of) and Fields of the Nephilim kept Homepride in business. Here then for your listening and reminiscing pleasure, as the witching hour approaches, a 13 song mixtape down memory lane. In our cloaks and via the graveyard of course, accompanied by legions of squeaking bats. Download The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary mp3 (from [...]

The Purrs kick off their latest EP with a Red Lorry Yellow Lorry Cover. Only Dreaming which comes from the Lorry's album Nothing Wrong was kind of a plodding dirge from the UK quasi goths. The Purrs on the other hand make the song soar. Guitars come diving in from multiple directions and Jima out disaffects the Lorry's Chris Reed with his dead-pan vocal. The Purrs vastly improve on the Lorry's source code, altering it to the point of making it their own. Tearing Down Paisley Garden seems to be a kind of [...]

The Horrors at Neumo's, Seattle | 6 September 2009 The fact that it's nearly a month before Halloween didn't seem to deter the hard core goths from making a night of it at the Horrors 's gig last night. There was lots of white face paint, fake blood, black tights with rips, a few wild whigs and even a guy with some weird mannequin like mask and a head wrap. Based on the press photos for the Horrors I was guessing that the band [...]

Tavis Smiley : I want to talk about the song, "Dreamer," that you dedicate to Dick (Gregory). Prince: Oh, well, when I saw the "State of the Black Union," Dick Gregory really moved me and a lot of my friends. I show it to everybody who comes over the house, especially White folks, because they need to hear that, so that they know more about all of us. Because what he said affects all of us. He said something that really hit home [...]

Photo taken by this talented lady I was going to post something tonight. One of the many stories that have accumulated and jammed up both mind and soul. But I just couldn't. I feel like I'm going around and around on some infernal carousel, sometimes awake, sometimes asleep, sometimes a bit of both. At times the ride is thrilling, but mostly I just want to get off. Sigh. It's a bank holiday weekend in the UK. A weekend when half the UK either flee the country for sunnier climes while the other half desperately try to light a barbecue in the rain. To celebrate an extra day off work todays post is a sumptuous buffet of great tracks and new bands starting with a lush starter... School of Seven [...]

These were requested by a couple friends of mine, so without further ado... Red Lorry Yellow Lorry ...for MAJ Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (named after a vague tongue twister [try Unique New York] ) were a Leeds, England quartet, formed in 1981 by vocalist Chris Reed [...]
Spinning Round :: Red Lorry Yellow Lorry NB: If you're ever asked to do the music at a party, and some inebriated girl stumblings over to you and asks you to play 'Spinning Round', chances are that she's just a Kylie Minogue fan and NOT yer new best friend with a great appreciation for non-LP RLYL singles. I had to learn this the hard way, and had things chucked at me. It was a bit like the good intentioned tourist that actually asks the shop lady about the pleasures of young boys instead of the [...]

It was a balmy 70 degrees today in our little suburb northwest of Boston. My wife opened up some windows to let the fresh air in, and I started sweating from the heat while working though my weekend chores, even though I was only wearing jeans and a t-shirt. It was preferable to digging out from under a January blizzard, but it just didn't feel natural. A ferocious wind picked up after the sun sank behind the western hills. I was out on the patio just prior to writing this, watching the silhouettes of the trees behind our [...]
I was miserable in high school and being a typical self-centered teenager, I thought this made me unique despite all those John Hughes movies to the contrary. My musical selection for my "Songs That Got Me Through High School" mix tape will give you 78 minutes of my mid-eighties strum und angst. Onwards to the music with minor commentary. 1. Major Tom (Coming Home) by Peter Schilling The first two albums I ever bought were The Police's Synchronicity [...]
