LAST weekend, while rooting around in my garage, I found a bag of CDs. In that bag of CDs, I stumbled across one of the sweetest things a music lover can find - a forgotten 'mixtape'. I say mixtape, because obviously the cassette tape was the golden age of making compilations, the almost forgotten art of putting together a collection of tracks which work together, and perfectly capture a moment in time. This one - titled What The F***? - was burnt for posterity in my first year at university, which were heady days, I can assure [...]

First out of the vinyl vaults is the Red Snapper mix of In Absentia by Glamorous Hooligan - an act that never have entered my radar since, hardly surprising that there's only just under 350 listeners on last.fm. Red Snapper on the other hand never fail to deliver as seen in this jazz/funk hip-hop track. Glamorous Hooligan - In Absentia (Red Snapper mix)

Japanese IDM techno artist gets a jazz makeover from Red Snapper. Ken Ishii has been around since the early 90s with his delicate techno. He started out on Belgian techno label R&S. More here . Today's track is from a 1996 103 on R&S. Given it's a Red Snapper remix, expect lots of double bass. More on Red Snapper here . ★★★★☆ UK jazz-funk dogs of war Rich Thair, Ali Friend and David Ayers reclaim the stage as Red Snapper’s superior staying power plays wingman to their evergreen skill. Since their 1996 debut album Prince Blimey , in and then out the other side of the trip hop in-crowd, their ability with a double-bass, guitar and drum setup remains unparalleled, with one foot still planted in the camp ranking high as a live spectacle. Their fifth studio LP has a definite air of dissidence to it. “In Your Backs’ sees the Snapper in [...]

I really don't know anything about them. I knew they were on Paper Recordings and remixed a number of acts I liked. But that was it. Discogs isn't much more helpful. It says that they were Elliot Eastwick, Miles Hollway, Simon Bradshaw and their aliases include Paper Boys and Paper Music. But for Paper Recordings discogs says: A tale about PAPER and Repap Records: when we first started talking about setting up a record label it was January 1993. It was a dark miserable night in Manchester that would have [...]

Back to Andrew Weatherall's group of the early 1990s, Sabres of Paradise. This time with remixes of other people's work. Includes Chemical Brothers, Bjork and Red Snapper. Andrew Weatherall's Sabres of Paradise were one of the U.K.'s most celebrated experimental techno groups. A combined effort of Weatherall and collaborators Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns, the group released a flood of singles and EPs, many of which were collected on compilations released by Warp and Weatherall's other main focus: the Sabrettes label, with releases from Plod and Slab, among others. Born in Windsor, Berkshire, Weatherall considers himself [...]

Shut Up And Dance. You got to admit it's a great name for an act. From Wiki: Shut Up And Dance was an English music duo that fused hip hop, house and hardcore, and are best known for their single "Raving I'm Raving", which reached No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1992. The group was formed in 1988 in Stoke Newington, London, England by Philip 'PJ' Johnson and Carl 'Smiley' [...]

Start of the letter "R". It also seems too long since we had something from Lord Sabre, so let's rectify that. Red Snapper put the jazz into 90s dance. Notable for their pioneering synthesis of acoustic instruments and electronic textures, the British acid jazz trio Red Snapper comprised guitarist David Ayers, double bassist Ali Friend and drummer Richard Thair. Formed in 1993, the group's debut EP The Snapper appeared the following spring; after two more EPs, Swank and Hot Flush, Red Snapper signed to the acclaimed Warp Records label, [...]

Bit obscure this. In a didn't-sell-many-copies-and-di dn't-go-on-to-release-more-rec ords kind of way. Hookian Mindz was Remi Adelaja, who released "Freshmess" on Flagbearer Records in 1995. It was the only release as Hookian Mindz. I've included it for the two remixes. Red Snapper do their spartan jazz thing but the Bandulu mix is the one to go for. Strong beats and dub on that one. Hookian Mindz - Freshmess (Bandulu Mix) mediafire Hookian Mindz - Freshmess (Red Snapper Remix) mediafire [...]

Indie Rock darlings Garbage get the remix treatment from jazzists Red Snapper and Danny Saber. On Garbage, discogs says "Legendary rock producer Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) and friends Marker and Erikson made up the group Fire Town in the late 1980s. But then they started making wild electronic/rock mixes for artists like House of Pain. They were pretty glad for this decision, but they need a strong female vocalist to front them. Enter Shirley Manson, from the group Angelfish. The guys reportedly saw an Angelfish video on MTV's "120 Minutes" and [...]

I'm sitting here listening to nice ambient tones from Moist. To be exact, the EP "Alone", a 7-track record with 4 original tracks and 3 interesting remixes from Addeboy vs Cliff , Håkan Lidbo and Red Snapper . The Moist songs has a mellow, atmospheric feeling, where heavy bass beats step down and give depth to it all. At the same time this is good down-tempo pop with Maria Marcus' somewhat distanced, souly voice in a perfect marriage with the ambience. Really good electronica which you can dive into and dream away [...]

Eagle-Eye Cherry (Lanoo Eagle-Eye Cherry) is half brother to Neneh Cherry and son of Don Cherry. Being born into such a musical family it is not surprising that he makes music. Born in Sweden in 1971, while growing up, Eagle-Eye and older sister Neneh Cherry spent months on the road with their father, the trumpeter Don Cherry, acquiring an early taste for tour buses and the nomadic lifestyle of working musicians. At the age of 12, he was sent to school in New York, where he stayed on to work as [...]

This year Matador Records turns the big 2-0! It's a big deal for what I consider to be the best label out there these days, and let's face it Matador has been cranking out great music since it first opened its doors in 1989. 10-years ago the label celebrated with a nice little compilation called Everything Is Nice , pulling material from the bands that had filled their roster for the first 10-years. Bands as wide and diverse as Pavement, Mogwai, Chavez, and Yo La Tengo are all found on this fantastic compilation, as well as some of the [...]
Remember the late 90s when electronic music was at its popular peak and the "chill out" craze that killed downbeat music was just around the corner? I LOVED those days. This was before a million "Cafe Del Mar" and "Best Chillout Album EVER" compilations sucked the life and soul out of dubby, liquid trip-hop and replaced it with Zero 7 remixes of Coldplay songs. Good times, good times. Among the best of them was the UK's Red Snapper - a trio that played smooth drum 'n' bass with all the musicianship of a "proper" jazz outfit. Their landmark [...]
I finally got motivated and fixed the comment functionality around here. I was not happy with what I had. Now you can leave a comment and tell me how much I suck. Or what a great tune fill in the blank is. Or anything you feel like saying. As usual on a Friday I provide the beats to move your feets, so here are a few tasty morsels to tide you over...
