"Before I sat down to write this, I put on a record. (Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention One Size Fits All, if you were wondering.)" "There is something soothing about "putting on a record." You get to find it in your crate, pile, bag, or pull it off your wall, slide it out, place it on your turntable, use your brush to pull the dust off, then set your needle to the groove. It involves care, and preciseness. Maybe it's the musician in me (the one [...]

Columbus, Ohio's Red Wanting Blue just released its new album The Vanishing Point. This release brings a strain of songwriting and performance likely to appeal to fans of a more organic American pop/rock. This is the band's first new album since 2008's These Magnificent Miles which was re-issued in 2010. Some tunes below for a better sense of things. "Audition" "White Snow" "Walking Shoes" [...]

Sometimes I feel like that sad sack from the Alka Seltzer commercials of 70s advertising immortality. I can't. believe. I listened. to the whole. thing. And while the feeling I get from From the Vanishing Point isn't one of acidic regret, this forgettable effort by Midwestern alt-rockers Red Wanting Blue nevertheless leaves me feeling glutted as if on copious amounts of bland, mass-produced fare. This is not as surprising as it is still disappointing from a band who has managed to keep their act together for twenty years. RWB had a decent gig in [...]
Even after ten years of hustling, Red Wanting Blue's latest reminds us of a watered down Nickleback. And that ain't good.

Paint it bland. Cut from the same cloth as Counting Crows, Hootie & the Blowfish and others of that ilk, this Columbus, Ohio-based outfit suffers from an everyman-ness that might be charming on the bar circuit but proves less so on record. Despite some well-written material and competent performances, Red Wanting Blue ultimately sounds bland -- the kind of group that's perfect for an independent film soundtrack: familiarly inoffensive, offensively unmemorable. Leader Scott Terry does a credible Eddie...

The road is a fickle mistress. Ask any working band that is trying to make a living playing music. The band is usually on a bus, van, truck or RV stuffed with band mates, roadies, gear and luggage. The band could be in Ames, Iowa on a Wednesday night followed by an all day road trip for three nights of performances in Kearney, Nebraska, then three days on the road to play one night in Vienna, Virginia, afterward leaving immediately to drive to the next week's gigs - one in Philadelphia, one in New York and one in Cambridge, [...]
