Words by Jacob Barron In honor of the spirit of rebirth with which spring is so frequently associated, I'll be using this edition of Soundtracking Your Spring 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me to completely destroy everything you know and love about this column. Or, you know, freshen it up with a more piecemeal approach, whatever. The point is, last time got me thinking about the whole idea of seasons not as one monolithic thing, but a diverse set of vignettes, each with its own mood or temperature. In the end, you [...]

Gabriel White has emerged from the innards of Knoxville' s burgeoning music scene, with an experiment of an album, that as far as experiments go, has stood to prove the hypothesis that Gabriel is really talented. The album ranges from soft pop, acoustic heavy tracks like Get it Away, to the more synth based dreamy stuff you hear below in Over Time in Time . You can stream and download Relay, in it's entirety, here . Oh, and thanks to pals Amdiscs , a physical form will take place in the near future.
Tu espérais une playlist d'été ? Tu es bien mal tombé car Get The Curse te livre ici l'exact opposé. En effet, une bonne partie de cette sélection touche à la frange la plus expérimentale de la techno. Celle qui n'a que faire des mélodies, des nappes rêveuses ou des beats dansants et se concentre [...]

>> Philly-based dream-pop veterans Arc In Round (lest we forget the band's years working under the nom de guerre Relay ) kick off Monday night's Kurt Vile show at Brighton Music Hall, and we strongly advise folks to get there early to check the quartet out. Co-fronted by in-demand recording engineer/live sound guy Jeff Zeigler, Arc In Round has issued a second EP, logically titled II , hot on the heels of its long-awaited debut EP Diagonal Fields , which was released early in 2011. The II [...]

>> This is our final post of the year. See you in 2009. >> For those of you not monitoring our Twitter feed last week, Philly based shoegaze quartet Relay has been reborn as Arc In Round . The re-christened act will likely make a big splash with its new material during a brief jaunt around the country in January with the fiery Scottish four Frightened Rabbit . As if that supporting slot wasn't auspicious enough, Arc In Round will also play one of the planned Swirlies reunion dates in [...]
Having seen Brooklyn now-quartet Violens back in April at North Star Bar (when a 5 piece), I was more than excited to catch the band again last night at Johnny Brenda's along with locals Ape School and Relay. Ape School opened the show with an indie acid rock and indie pop rock set that, [...]

It's the unofficial last weekend of summer. Those of you that are not heading towards the coast, have a few options available. There are mostly local acts playing local venues, with a couple big name shows thrown in for good measure. Austin is representing this weekend at Towson University, when What Made Milwaukee Famous takes the stage. They are on tour in support of their new album What Doesn't Kill Us and I definitely recommend it. Those of you in Philly can [...]

Tonight Baltimore's Talking Head has FFHH, E. Joseph, Red This Ever, and David Daniel. In DC the Velvet Lounge has Relay, Timberwolf Division, and Girl Loves Distortion. Up north in PA, the Fillmore at the TLA hosts Sonic Youth and The Hold Steady, Cafe M has The Swims and Perkasie, while the Wachovia center has NIN and Does It Offend You, Yeah?. mp3: Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane mp3: Relay - Context mp3: FFHH - The Body mp3: [...]

Wow, it's only Tuesday. Yet, tonight's regional concert slate is loaded. No matter where you are, there is something worth seeing. At Sonar in Baltimore, you have a fantastic show. Scotland's The Twilight Sad has been taking America by storm and they will be in town tonight. Philly's Relay will be joining them. The Twilight Sad - That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy Relay - Context [...]

Opening bands: Relay, Tender Forever Electrelane | Photo Gallery Wasn't it just last month that I posted about Electrelane ( MySpace )? Yup... I love this band. This was my first time attending the very cool Johnny Brenda's ... a great bar venue serving only locally brewed beers and with restrooms that I wouldn't mind pooping in (truly a first). Johnny Brenda's has free and ample street parking and the area doesn't give you that "oh shit, I'm gonna [...]
It honestly came as a complete surprise when we found our blog listed on several other websites as being shoegaze-related. Don't get me wrong, it is very much appreciated. It just got us thinking that it might be a good idea to go back and sort through our posts and figure out how we earned this particular distinction. After spending some time listening and falling in love all
Yes it may be derivative but if you are so inclined it can hardly be regarded as a crime when the band you emulate are My Bloody Valentine. And Relay manage to do a really good job of adding their own twist to the classic shoegaze sound. The band are headed by Jeff Ziegler who started life as a producer but gradually began recording the sounds that were going around his head. As we've come to

Philly welcomes you to Austin, Texas and we are on our way to SXSW! We know you'll all be raging from party to party however, on Saturday you must stop by the Second Annual Philebrity.com Philly Jawn . Some of illadelph's finest will be playing all week long and I thought I'd point out some of the phlava that Philly is bringing down South. BBQ? Big deal. We got cheesesteaks. The A-Sides [...]
We don't think the guys and girl in Philadelphia's Relay will mind too much if we say the quartet is not exactly Van Halen 1.0 on stage. At their gig last night at TT The Bear's Place in Cambridge, Mass. there were no flaming gongs . No flashy guitar solos . Instead band leader Jeff Ziegler and his bandmates delivered focused, economical versions of a number of tracks from Relay 's two 2006 Bubble Core Records releases, Type/Void EP and Still Point Of Turning . And while we didn't keep [...]

For almost a year now Crackers United has ruled the land of blog sponsored shows in New York. Their monthly Friction show highlights some of the best buzz bands of the moment and is usually a pretty good place to get some free Sparks and see a live show. Now the time has come for a challenger to step up and challenge Friction's supremacy! The Battering Room and myself will be the first to throw our hat into the ring to battle this Goliath! On Saturday our shows will be [...]

FRICTION rings in the new year with a night of shimmering guitars, ethereal loops, stereo reverb, and banjo feedback featuring New York City's O'Death , Mahogany , and Daylight's For The Birds along with Philadelphia's Relay . As always, we'll be hosting a open Sparks! bar from 9:30pm-10:30pm. In addition, David B of Slap You In Public and Pistolwhipped fame will be spinning tracks between [...]

Unless something drastic happens, I'm not planning a Best of 2006 list. I only started this blog six weeks ago and wasn't really keeping track of what's this year and what wasn't. Maybe next year. Plenty are available to satisfy even the most rabid listomaniac. If you want to see some so far, check out the excellent Largehearted Boy's list of lists. I might, though, go back through my playlists for the year and pick out some of my favorites, in no particular order. This could take awhile, as there are hundreds. Here's a handful [...]
