Whether you listen to an artist because they sound good or because you've been attracted by their name, either item always seems to be one of two reasons you've discovered any number of songs in your music library. Remember the old days before iTunes when you would look at the album cover and say, "Yup, I'm going to buy this". Now that times have changed and music is so readily available to us, it still comes down to the band name itself that can either make or break our decision to even listen to the artist. The list below represents [...]
It's been three years since The Door throbbed its way into the world and Religious Knives have been sorely missed in the interim. Making an obvious jump to Sacred Bones, the band releases one of their most unshakeable albums yet; walking the line between Krautrock's hammered pace and psych's fractured shadows. Smokescreen is a fitting title for the Knives' latest, obscured in ripples of mercurial psychedelics, it's almost easy to underestimate the leaden punch that the band packs. Anchored by Maya Miller's organ and the submerged buzzsaw of Michael Bernstein's guitar, the album writhes with life [...]

On Saturday, April 3rd, WMUC Radio & Fan Death Records present this year's DNA Test Fest . The festival is in its 3rd year now, growing each time since its humble beginnings at the WMUC station itself, to last year at the Velvet Lounge, and now graduating to Sonar in Baltimore. The line up this year looks awesome, with Psychedelic Horseshit , Religious Knives , Pissed Jeans , and tons more. Check out the full-sized poster here for the complete line up, on the first of many versions of the poster art to come.
Of course it's no surprise that the new Religious Knives full-length is good. Like Smuckers, if it says Ecstatic Peace on the label, it has to be good. With that said, The Door is still a nice surprise, considering how different it sounds from Resin released earlier this year (though the latter is a collection of older material and some live renditions). The most noticeable and significant difference between The Door and Religious Knives' earlier drone explorations is that the band, sometime between then and now, [...]
This is another band I feel like I've been writing about all year, but I'll be damned if they don't just top themselves with each new release. Following a stellar 12", album and singles collection this year the Knives are now kicking in a release for psych's preeminent label, Ecstatic Peace. This is the most refined and clear headed I've heard the Brooklyn foursome sound yet, eschewing some of their former murk but without losing their grasp on sprawling sweat stained jams. The renewed fidelity only strengthens their hold on the roots of psych and classic rock's lurching past, with [...]
I've been violently cranking Religious Knives as of late. I saw them once with, I think, Wizzardz (a Lightning Bolt side project). Or maybe it was Zodiac Mountain. I don't remember. Either way, Religious Knives is awesome, and reminds me a lot of one of my forgotten favorites - Loop. Loop was a nasty, abominable scourge on the pop-friendly C86 camp in late '80s Britain. Foul beasts they were, Loop demonstrated their intent to keep music solemnly evil with 1989's Fade Out . Neither image [...]
GET HYPE! Long Beach California's Crystal Antlers bring their pummeling live show to the East Coast for this installment of FRICTION at The Mercury Lounge. With an explosive build-up of noise and melody blended with raw vocals and twisting riffs, this quintet has mastered the art of thrash. Brooklyn synthfolk darlings Chairlift (who's debut LP, Does You Inspire You is about to drop) and borough-mates Religious Knives ( Resin recently reviewed here ), best known to dish out delicious plates of noise, round out this bill. [...]
Further excursions into heavy drone syrup from the ever enjoyable Religious Knives. Resin rounds up some OOP vinyl tracks along with a few newbies, including a jam with NNK'er Dave Nuss. Rolling and seething like a ship tossed in a storm, the band move from slow swells of organ fueled dirge to pumping psych fires flecked with kraut-popped percussion. It's hard to judge this as an album with the disparate sources of the original tracks, but no matter what the circumstances the Knives have a fuel for epic organ psych that seeps into your pores like blackened wood [...]

The Daily Choice: Religious Knives - The Message
I try not to, on most occasions, not to dip too deeply in to my own personal experience when writing The Daily Choice. I can't help myself this time though. As I write this, I'm sitting in the "Breakfast Room" of a Days Inn in humid Dubuque, Iowa surrounded by a gaggle of elderly, Christian [...]

RELIGIOUS KNIVES are back with a brand new full length on Sacred Bones, their last coming from the Ecstatic Peace label back in 2008. That being said, it's been awhile since these Brooklyn natives were back in the spotlight. If you were like us, then you probably weren't aware that these guys have quite an extended discography already released under their belt. And here we are just getting into

Gala Drop e Religious Knives
