The Friday Morning Listen: R.E.M. – Green (1988)

Everything will kill you, eventually. Pay enough attention to media reports and you'll discover that consuming just about anything will lead to your early demise. You've upgraded your diet and added lots of broccoli? Be careful, because too much will lead to kidney issues. Brown rice is your new staple? Watch out, that stuff can contain a lot of hidden [...]

R.E.M. – Green 25th Anniversary Edition

R.E.M. - World Leader Pretend (From Tourfilm)
In the grand scheme of their career, R.E.M.'s sixth studio album has somewhat faded into the background. Released in 1988, it fell between their final days as an independent act with the much revered Document and their transition to one of the biggest bands in the world with Out Of Time and Automatic For The People . Yet, while it may have not been on repeat in some households (this one included), this latest reissue is proof that absence has made the heart grow fonder and proves that the record sits comfortably amongst [...]

Review/Listen: R.E.M. – Green (25th Anniversary Edition)

Review/Listen: R.E.M. – Green (25th Anniversary Edition) R.E.M.'s major label debut, Green , was released on Election Day in 1988. It was a canny move from a political band, making their mark on the public consciousness on the very day the Reagan administration turned into the first Bush administration. The record also happened to be the band's entry into the big leagues, going from a small-town Southern band with a knack for jangle guitar and art-punk posturing into a world conquering behemoth that would become one of the most popular bands of the 902s. While the album itself is [...]

Big Star’s Third schedules shows for Chicago, New York City

Big Star’s Third schedules shows for Chicago, New York City In March 2010, Big Star' s Jody Stephens honored late band mate Alex Chilton with an impromptu all-star performance of the band's 1978 classic, Third (later Sister Lovers ), during South by Southwest. Later that year, Stephens unearthed the album's original scores and began staging a handful of shows across the country, featuring a shifting lineup of performers and singers, along with a full orchestra. Now, the project has announced two new performances for Chicago (June 28th) and New York City (June 30th). Stephens will be on skins for both outings and [...]

Album Review: R.E.M.- Green [Deluxe Edition]

There's a lot that can be read into the title of R.E.M.' s 1988 major label debut. One can look at Green as a proud defense of the Athens band's growing left-wing ideology, or perhaps as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lucrative contract it signed with Warner Bros. But looking back on the record 25 years later, the title might best be taken as an earnest acknowledgement of new beginnings, where a well-respected band turns a corner from its past and ventures eagerly into the musical unknown. Taken as such, R.E.M. couldn't have stumbled across [...]

Dreams They Complement My Life

R.E.M. "Get Up" (Live in Greensboro, SC, 1989) A lot of songs that implore the listener to “do something” with their lives can seem awfully smug and self-satisfied, but R.E.M.’s “Get Up” side-steps that trap by making it clear from the start that the singer is addressing himself as much as the audience. The lyrics are intentionally vague about what Michael Stipe wants us all to do, but the basic point is abundantly clear: No matter who we are or what we do, we need to resist the empty comforts of apathy and become active members [...]

Pearson Sound – REM EP

Pearson Sound – REM EP Yesterday, Pearson Sound released his first EP this year; a four-track release titled  REM.  The EP will arrive as a follow-up to 20122s  Untitled/Footloose  12-inch on David Kennedy's own Pearson Sound label, and despite the misleading PEARS24 catalogue number, this will be only the second single to come out on the eponymous imprint. The London-based producer is releasing it digitally and on 12-inch. It's already copped support from Benji B and Gilles Peterson, and keen-eared fans (like me lol) would have already heard some radio love on Rinse FM's Hessle Audio show. It's his first solo record since September's  [...]

New Music Monday: R.E.M., Del-Lords, Suicidal Tendencies, Christian McBride, Blue Murder

A pair of big-selling 1980s albums from either end of the rock spectrum get the deluxe reissue treatment, one the then-emerging indie-rockers R.E.M. and the other the confirmed pop-rock stars Huey Lewis and the News. Meanwhile, the Del-Lords (a shambolic delight, one of America's many answers to the Clash) offer a triumphal reunion; and Randall Bramblett (best known for his [...]

R.E.M. – Green: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2013)

R.E.M. - World Leader Pretend
If 19872s Document heralded the moment when R.E.M. started to get away from us, the follow up Green confirmed things: This wasn't going to be our little secret anymore. Still, for all of the wailing and gnashing of teeth among the college-radio hipsters (ahem!), Green was really more of a bridge between the two worlds than a destination. Sure, tracks [...]

Review/Listen: Deerhunter – Monomania

Review/Listen: Deerhunter – Monomania The press release for Deerhunter's Monomania included the cryptic line describing the record as "avant garde(?) but only in context not form." It's a confounding statement meant to confuse and add spectacle, though neither are necessary. Such is the way of  Bradford Cox , Deerhunter 's enigmatic frontman who has grown into his own as both rock star and entertainer. His artsy tendencies have been traded in for his love for American music, making Monomania a mix of not [...]

R.E.M. - Live in Greensboro CD EP Review (Record Store Day Release)

R.E.M. - Live in Greensboro CD EP Review (Record Store Day Release) "There's a sucker born every minute" -- David Hannum Yawn...the last few releases in R.E.M.'s 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition series have been extremely lackluster and the band's new EP, "Live in Greensboro", which is a companion piece to the forthcoming Green reissue (out May 14th), doesn't fail to disappoint. "Live in Greensboro" is being marketed as "featur[ing] a handful of performances from the Greensboro show that, due to space constraints, are not found on the [ Green ] Deluxe Edition". While the implication is that this EP [...]

Review/Listen: Guided by Voices – English Little League

Review/Listen: Guided by Voices – English Little League Robert Pollard is an indie rock legend. As the driving force behind the Dayton, Ohio group Guided by Voices , his output has not only been of exceptional quality, but exceptionally prolific. English Little League is the band's 20th studio album since their formation in ’83 – and making twenty LPs in that amount of time is no mean feat, especially if you discount their recent 6-year hiatus. They were most celebrated at the midpoint of the ‘90s, when they put out modern classics such as [...]

The Best Musician Appearances on ‘The Colbert Report’

Iggy and the Stooges were in cracking form on The Colbert Report last night, making them the latest in a long line of bands who've appeared as guests on Stephen Colbert's long-running satirical chat show. Of all the late-night hosts on TV, Colbert seems to get the most amusing interviews and performances out of musicians; here are a selection of The Colbert Report 's very best musical moments. You're more than welcome. [...]

Bloggy Goodness: Weir Here Hits The Road

Bloggy Goodness: Weir Here Hits The Road We've been big fans of Bob Weir's fantastic Weir Here since it debuted last year. The semi-regular web variety show, which is broadcast live from Weir's TRI Studios, has featured members of the Grateful Dead and its extended family swapping stories and performing a mix of tunes. During a recent episode, the former Bobby & The Midnights lead singer revealed that he will take the show on the road this fall, where he will be joined by Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jonathan Wilson, Jay Lane (Primus), Jason Crosby and Jeff Chimenti (Furthur, RatDog), as [...]

The Essential Black Crowes (Or, Why Kree Harrison Is My Favorite Would-Be "American Idol")

The Essential Black Crowes (Or, Why Kree Harrison Is My Favorite Would-Be "American Idol") About two months ago, my iPod shuffle landed on The Black Crowes' "A Conspiracy" as I was running around the Tan in Melbourne, and I had one of my increasingly semi-regular '90s moments. They were, after all, some of the best years of my life so far. As flashbacks of Bill and Hillary Clinton filled my head, I remembered that Atlanta's Robinson brothers and company were my second-favorite rock & roll group of the decade (and the genre's top squawkers, high above Sheryl Crow and Counting Crows), and promptly spent the next 24 hours or so listening [...]
