This track from Minneapolis emcee MaLLy is called 'Future's Classic,' but it really harkens back to the boom bap era, before finely manicured goatees ( Cole World!! ) and sing-along choruses were a hip hop fixture. Not only does MN have 10,000 lakes, but there is no denying the emcee clout from the Twin Cities. Must be something in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. Oh, and Miami producer Rem' put his foot in the production on this. The city of Athens, Georgia has always been known for its beauty and vibrant musical heritage. A plan by an Atlanta-based developer to build a massive mixed-use development anchored by a Wal-Mart has threatened to cut into the beauty and vibe that makes the city special. It's easy to understand why there's a lot of buzz around Todd Gautreau and his project Crushed Stars. The guy's voice instantly registers thoughts of R.E.M. On March 6th, Simulacra Records will release In The Bright Rain the latest from Crushed Stars. While Gautreau performed most of the instrumentation himself, he borrowed a few accomplished musicians -- drummer Jeff Ryan (St. Vincent, War on Drugs) Howard Draper (formerly of Okkervil River/Shearwater) and Buffi Jacobs (The Polyphonic Spree). This is R.E.M. recorded live (soundboard sourced) at one of the bands local venues namely Tyrone's O.C., in Athens GA, USA, way back on the 23rd September 1981. This recording features both sets and includes the sound check (not proven but by sound quality etc generally agreed to be from this gig). This was the bands 26th gig at Tyrone's O.C. the first at this venue taking place just over a year earlier on the 6th May 1980, and that performance was only their 5th ever full live gig.
