Terrific EP from Lake Charles, LA power poppers Research Turtles are a terrific power pop band, but releasing records out of their Lake Charles, Louisiana base, and playing mostly local shows, they still haven't broken through commercially. But their lack of national renown isn't for want of great music or promotional savvy; they've effectively worked music bloggers, and last year they organized fans to vote the band's self-titled album as Radio Six International 's "Record of the Year" for 2010. The Turtles have recently knocked out the first of two EPs, [...]

Words: Gareth O'Malley I have to be honest and say that on first glance I was entirely unsure what to think of both this band's name and their tastes in cover artwork. I'm still not quite there yet, but it is significant that the sun can be seen clearly in the backdrop of the shot. You'll understand why when you listen to the Louisiana-based quartet's music. Research Turtles (comprised of a two brothers, Jud and Joe Norman , and two others, Logan Fontenot and Blake Thibodeaux ) have [...]

teepoo Research Turtles is a pop-punk rock band from Louisiana. Their sound reminds me a lot of bands like Plain White Tees, and Cute is What we Aim For. Their self-titled debut album is available to download for FREE on their website . All 11 tracks seem to be radio ready quality. If you're into pop-punk than there's nothing you wouldn't like about this album. There's all elements of predictable harmonies and power chords and very simple melodic hooks. Their bio says that they were influenced by many [...]

Homemade EP of power-pop and rock This four piece power-pop band from Lake Charles, LA released this DIY EP a year before their official debut album [ review ]. The sweet voices, winsome lyrics, catchy melodies and guitar-drive are here, but without the polish they'd find in a proper studio. The bass is a bit heavy, though they do a great job of setting the vocals into the mix, managing to keep the harmonies afloat without ever breaking loose from the instrumental backing. Of the seven titles only the opener, "Damn," was repeated on [...]

Throwback power-pop and rock with modern energy Okay, their white shirts say "children of The Knack ," which would also make them grandchildren of the Beatles. And with Doug Fieger having passed away last month, it's great to hear the next generation carrying the torch for power-pop and rock. Raised in Lake Charles, LA, the Research Turtles could easily have been an Americana or redneck rock band, but they latched onto classic pop and rock sounds of the '60s, '70s and '80s, kicked up the tempo and turned up their electric [...]

If it was up to me to promote this group the first thing I would do is change their name. " Research Turtles " – WTF does that mean? I could not find any information that gave an indication that the name " Research Turtles " had some deep meaning, housed a profound epiphany or was chosen after thoughtful analysis. The band certainly doesn't sound anything like the Turtles – although the members do seem "Happy Together". Sure, there have been successful rock bands with terrible nonsensical names - like Chumbawamba , Hoobastank [...]

Louisiana rockers The Research Turtles ( pictured left ) say they play "British rock invasion meets modern rock" - When I listen, I hear strains of Fountains of Wayne, The Knack and Stone Temple Pilots, but you might hear something else! Hear some clips of their debut CD at their MySpace page or download the CD at their home page . Read more about the band at The Rock n Roll Report . - Japanese high energy rockers Polysics played Phoenix last night , and the New Times Jonathan [...]
