Until a couple of months ago when I was introduced to anticon records through listening to Why? 's Alopecia on some strong recommendations and learning that Anathallo had signed to the label, I had no idea that anticon. records existed. Sure I had familiarity with some of their artists (especially Dosh, who I've seen a number of times in concert with Andrew Bird), but after recently began checking out their catalog, I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this label earlier. Their entire philosophy towards music (found in the label's about section ) is fascinating, as is [...]

Restiform Bodies, a three piece indie hip hop act from Oakland comprised of Passage, Telephone Jim Jesus, and Bomarr, have recently put out their long awaited sophomore album on anticon. entitled TV Loves You Back . This album throws analog synth, tape loops, samples, indie rock, and hip hop into a toxic blender and spits out bright neon mind splatter. Sometimes sounding like El-P, sometimes sounding like Depeche Mode, it's taken me a while for me to get my head around what's going on on TV Loves You Back . I don't think I have still. [...]

Ordinarily I don't get too drunk before I roll out to a show (my goal is to, you know, remember the shit I want to write in my review), but Tuesday was the night of the presidential debate, and it took five beers over the course of those ninety minutes for me to be able to tolerate the sight of John McCain's 72-year-old chin trying to flip up to contain the bullshit that spills out of his mouth. So when I showed up at Bottom of the Hill, I was a little more, uh, outgoing than usual, ready [...]

being a personal essay and photos about the band Why? that was supposed to be a show review by Benjamin "Benny" Burwell St. Maur. I've received a lot of great advice directly from Why?'s songwriter Yoni Wolf over the last few months. I mean, when I say "directly," I mean, obviously, "indirectly"—through his songs—but directly in the sense that those songs have been broadcasting directly into my head pretty much non-stop for the last six months. And, okay, I guess [...]

Over a week behind on this.... Noteworthy Albums Released on 9/30/08: Dungen : 4 (Kemado) – While I've heard they draw somewhat heavily from early Swedish pysch rock 'n' roll, they sound unique to me. The Swedes' fourth record is their most group oriented effort yet. Gustav Ejstes moves behind the piano and limits the flute solos. The album has a mellower vibe than the last two, with more emphasis on the free jazz; but they do manage to rock out a couple of [...]

Ryan (StopMe) : I've spent a pleasant week reading a stack of new books I've just bought like Marjane Satrapi's engrossing and witty ' Chicken With Plums ' and Alan Moore's unsettling ' From Hell ' ( A journey into the mind of Jack The Ripper). In-between these highly recommended reads I've found time to track down ten more new and exciting sounds and here they are: The opening line "Remember when we we're young" sets the tone for this wistful Country inflected Indie single from Dawn Landes . Take a stroll down [...]

by kevin diamond This song by the Restiform Bodies slaps you in the face with it's bit-crushing beat. The lyrics name-drop Joan and Melissa rivers, so play it on the red carpet and scare the paparazzi away. BOBBY TRENDY ADDENDUM BY RESTIFORM BODIES:
Forgive us for the lack of postings this morning. Most of us here at Consequence of Sound are running on only couple hours of sleep thanks to those midnight showings. But then again, can you blame us? As we pound the tea and fight off our desires to run out and go see The Dark Knight again, well that is, until later this evening, we figured we'd leave you with another edition of the Friday Mixtape. Enjoy and always make sure you let us know which songs tickle your fancy... [...]
Don't hold me to this, but this new track from anticon oddities Restiform Bodies is about modern spoiled American rich-twit privilege. I think. Evocative, sometimes inventive phrases jump out-- "Fendi bag and an icy chalice," "Pony every birthday regardless of our behavior," "Appetites lashed to the hood of the Bentley"-- and even the parts that are hard to follow, pauseless strings of ideas that keep canceling out each preceding phrase at a rate of something like two per second, are more attention-grabbing than bewildering. But if they connect to each other in [...]

Boys like pussy and girls like money—West Philly representer, DJ Amaze reminded you of these simple facts on his recent 'BoyznGirlz' track—a downset hip-hop track that while poignant in its wisdom , was still lacking something... Enter Brooklynite Alan Astor , frequent DJ Amaze collaborator, singer/songwriter and electronic music producer. Alan Astor took what was otherwise bland production and gave it a properly banging electro makeover (Jenny Jones has nothing on it). With the highest esteem, I say that this track ought to be the High Powered Boys ' ( Bobmo x [...]
