Here we are. The end of the sixth year of the Nialler9 poll. Thank you all once again for voting. We had about 100 or so votes that made up the results in songs , new artists, EPs and now, the big one - albums. Our ultimate winner has topped the poll before that doesn't negate the indisputable fact that there's plenty of superb Irish music contained within this list... 25. The Ambience Affair - Burials 24. LaFaro - Easy Meat [...]
New single from Gaz Le Rock as Retarded Cop. Nardwaur is a fan . Conjuring up those heady opening days of a blossoming romance,'You Sound Like You're In Love' is bright shimmering pop with a grubby smear, like a Mod smudging scooter oil on his freshly laundered shirt. Bu...

Here's a look at the 15 bands I saw over the weekend at Electric Picnic 2011 that I loved lots. There was lots of other sets I enjoyed but these were my personal favourites. All the good photos are by Damien McGlynn (apart from the crappy Best Coast one - that was me) and Instagram photos are by myself or Aoife . Videos by Barry Gruff and Roger. 1. Santigold An absolute killer set to follow up her equally brilliant [...]

A year after the first compilation of Irish acts, Popical Island is back. The first album introduced people to the likes of Groom, Yeh Deadlies, Land Lovers, Feed The Bears and many more. Above all, we were introduced to Squarehead whose song went on to top Nialler9 readers' tracks of [Read more]
Characters. For a world that is supposed to entertain above all else, the modern music industry is depressingly lacking in them. Into that vacuum comes Gaz Le Rock, fag smoker, radio DJ and YouTube punk rock warrior. Le Rock's frequent outings as Retarded Cop have caught the online imagination, consummate examples of short, snappy and witty pop music, and – as their recent State gig proved – they already a punchy live act. Yet is it enough to tempt the listener to transfer their allegiance to the album format, especially when so many tunes are only a click [...]
Retarded Cop's album launch took place on Friday night in The Workman's Club with support from Groom and Fag Enablerz. Fun as had. Alan Moore reports with his camera. Fag Enablerz - The Workmans by Alan Moore [...]

Album of the week time. Those who have been following Gaz Le Rock's accelerated work-rate over the last six to eight months or so won't be surprised that the debut album from his pop punk project Retarded Cop is upon us. Entitled You Have The Right To Remain Retarded , the album was made possible thanks to "a mixture of Marshall amps, Gibson guitars, unemployment, sexual objectification, fast food, parenthood, police, celebrity winners and squirrels." It was recorded by James Eager at the Hive Studios in Wicklow and ‘ElectricGaryLand’ at home in Artane. Retarded Cop [...]

In the year and a bit that we’ve been running our State live shows at the Mercantile in Dublin we’ve seen many things – Le Galaxie playing their synths head high in the audience, a saw / beatbox combination, a whole rake of great new bands – but we haven’t had a brass section. Until our head to head battle with fellow music site Golden Plec that is. Happily Created By Comets also fit comfortably into the final category too, and stick out a mile amongst their contemporaries to boot. As the brass might suggest, there’s [...]
Since we last checked in with Gaz Le Rock aka Retarded Cop , he's written about 7 or 8 songs with more coming every few days at the moment. Here's my favourite of his recent endeavours, which sees Popicalia immortalised in song. "Popacalia..the place is always packed / At Popacalia I had sex in the jacks" Check out all the vids here and buy a T-shirt through Facebook . [...]
The Music Alliance Pact is a collective of 35 of the world’s top music blogs and webzines from 35 countries spanning six continents. Every month, each of these 35 sites picks one hot local song that gets posted on all these great blogs and zines. This month we picked Chennai alternative rock act Adam and The Fish Eyed Poets ' 'Little Monkeys' (from his debut album Snakeism , one of our top five albums of 2010 ) as the Indian representative on this massive international indie mixtape. You can download ‘Little Monkeys’ [...]
If you were down with Dublin punk-rock you're probably aware of Moutpiece , and particularly with their album artwork which featured singer Gaz Le Rock in his jocks outside a Dublin city centre fruit wholesalers giving it socks with a guitar. Gaz, now an awesome RTE 2XM radio DJ ( The Loving Room Floor ) is channeling that same energy and fervour into his solo punk pop project Retarded Cop. Since November, Gaz has been posting up Youtube videos and streams of new songs almost every week. A debut LP is in the works right [...]

It's the first monthly Music Alliance Pact of 2011 and once again the world's sexiest music blogs have sniffed out the tastiest musical treats their country has to offer and served it to you on a plate. And there's not even a bill. But you can leave a tip if you want. OK, I've definitely stretched this metaphor as far as it will go. Kudos to our Aussie MAP counterparts, who still managed to submit a song for you despite their home town being submerged under water and their website going temporarily offline. We're also joined this month [...]

Technicolour magnifier This is the first of what will be a regular new thing at EMJ, our contribution to the Music Alliance Pact (MAP). Coordinated by Jason at The Pop Cop , MAP is a monthly worldwide meeting of bloggers via short write-ups and a song from a band from each blogger's country that's currently exciting them. For the past two years Chris Walker at Counting the Beat has held the baton for New Zealand – and done a stellar job [...]
