Longtime jazz fusion ensemble Return To Forever was in Kansas City on Friday night, a decent but not sold-out crowd in attendance. One of the earliest bands to combine jazz and rock, RTF brought its unique sound in full force, taking us on a 2-hour trip that was enjoyable, technically amazing, sometimes a bit long-winded, but always very sincere.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story [...]

Return To Forever - Earth Juice

Toronto – Last Tuesday jazz super-group Return to Forever played two intense sets at the Sony Centre. In the 1970's jazz started to fuse with the rock & roll. Bands like Weather Report and some of Miles Davis' projects from that era started to blend ideas of improvisation with gut-punching rock beats. Return to Forever is the last band standing from those days, and they continue to play at the top of their game. Return to Forever is badass. Watching them live is like getting kicked in the nuts. It hurts, [...]

Drummer Lenny White has seemingly done it all during the span of his four-decade career. After making his recorded debut in 1970 on Miles Davis' landmark Bitches Brew — widely considered ground zero for the jazz-fusion movement — he would go on to work with such jazz legends as Freedie Hubbard, Jose Henderson, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, and Jaco Pastorius. During the '70s, he played in Santana percussionist Coke Escovedo's Azteca and was a member of Chick Correa's groundbreaking troupe, Return to Forever, which also included Stanley Clarke. Since Return to Forever's dissolution in the mid-'70s, White has [...]

Fusion drummer/composer extraordinaire Lenny White will forever be best known for his work with '70s jazz-rock supergroup Return To Forever, but it shouldn't be forgotten that he has maintained a fruitful solo career over the years, ultimately releasing many more albums on his own than he ever did with RTF. This time around, he offers up a mixed bag of sounds and styles that gives listeners an idea of the breadth of his influences. While tracks like "Gazelle" dip into a mood not dissimilar to the one he mined with Return To Forever, there are plenty of other strings to [...]
MUSIC NEWS - After 2008's worldwide reunion tour with Return To Forever and then separate trio tours in 2009 with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke and pianist Hiromi with Clarke, Lenny White worked up the steam to put out his own recording, his first as a leader in ten years . And now, we get word that on Anomaly , (out May 18, 2010 via Abstract Logix) the pioneering jazz-rock drummer returns to his roots that characterized the early 70s fusion movement. "We need to restart a revolution so [...]

On July 14th, 1974 an article by Stoney Brakefield appeared in the Pennsylvania newspaper, NEWS EXTRA, reporting an incident which allegedly took place in 1944 near this small coal mining town, yet because of it's nature it had been covered-up for nearly 40 years until the son of the mining inspector who investigated the incident revealed it as his father (then deceased) had related it to him. This mining inspector and a fellow investigator had been called in to look into a "cave-in" in one of the Dixonville mines. About 15 men had either been killed or [...]

Jazz in the 70's. It's almost as decisive as Van Halen fans debating David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar . If you're a fan of the genre, either the 70's was a decade of mind expanding experimentation or the apocalypse. There's really not much middle ground. Have no idea what I'm talking about? Super! Listen below without prejudice then. One of the biggest names in Jazz and the development of Jazz fusion in the 70's was the super-group Return To Forever (the other I'd posit is Herbie Hancock [...]
