Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi The third night of MUSINK gave the security guards some reprieve, as the tattoo/music festival closed the weekend out with a couple of non-SoCal acts: Memphis-based group Lucero and Dallas trio Reverend Horton Heat. Reverend Horton Heat's headlining, hour long set was succinct, leaving little room for quippy stage banter. Before joining up with Guttermouth for a tour next month , the Reverend Horton Heat will be hitting the road this month for a run of dates with support from Reno Divorce . The long-running rockabilly outfit signed to Victory Records late last year.

Reverend Horton Heat and Guttermouth have announce some tour dates together over the next few months.

The sixth annual MusInk festival has been announced, and among the bands set to play this year will be Bad Religion , The Vandals , Guttermouth , Pennywise , T.S.O.L. , Lagwagon , Reverend Horton Heat , Lucero , The Headcat (featuring Lemmy from Motörhead ) and Jonny Two Bags . Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi Reverend Horton Heat's exciting new tour debuted at The Fonda, celebrating the 25 to Life CD/DVD retrospective recently released earlier in the year.

 Frontman Jim Heath's winning smile kicked off the evening with "Psychobilly Freakout." The group continued to play selections in chronological order, including "It's Martini Time" from the band's third album of the same name.  "Jimbo Song" also made the cut, from what Heath jokingly referred to as the band's worst album, Space Heater .

Even though I'm not a modern country music fan, lately I've been a fan of musicians with tasteful and/or jaw-dropping chops that make their living playing offshoots of country music, which include bluegrass, Americana, Western swing, and rockabilly.  Reverend Horton Heat   has those types of musicians, and certainly could be called rockabilly. But they've taken the "rock" in rockabilly and replaced it with psycho. And it became psychobilly , characterized by gritty and rock-induced electric guitar riffs with a backbone of rockabilly and sometimes punk-rock rhythm provided by uptempo drums and slap-happy upright bass.
