It wasn't until the mid-'00s that Canadian independent music began to really make waves this side o' the pond. Broken Social Scene – the rather ironically entitled moniker to Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning's all-encompassing collective – had already released three full-lengths, the '05 eponymous third of which picked up umpteen plaudits here as well as being certified Gold over yonder, selling over 50,000 copies. Indeed, the duo's artistically embracive vehicle united members from such esteemed likes as Stars, and Metric, and Leslie Feist, and Reverie Sound Revue, and Do Make Say Think , and so forth. Startling records [...]

True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

Could the pendulum be swinging back in Canada's favour again? Just hearing lots of great stuff from there recently so it would nice to have a second invasion on our hands given the virility of the original. Alberta's Reverie Sound Revue have toured with Broken Social Scene in what would seem a natural stage for them given the freewheeling nature of both bands (as well as the fact that Lisa Lobsinge sings for both). Even though they formed almost a decade ago Reverie Sound Revue's releases amount to one EP and LP only (with a gap 6 years between both [...]

"New York, I know there are a lot of bands coming through here, so thanks for choosing to come see us tonight." Kevin Drew, the arguable frontman of Canadian musical cooperative Broken Social Scene seemed earnestly psyched to play for a sold-out crowd at Central Park's Rumsey Playfield on Sunday night, kidding around with the audience between nearly every song of the two-hour set. Emily Haines and Feist were nowhere to be found, but Lisa Lobsinger (of Reverie Sound Revue ) more than made up for their absence with her perfectly dreamy voice during songs like "Hotel," [...]

Christine Lim Though not technically related, yesterday afternoon's announcement of this year's Polaris Music Prize long list in the midst of all the NXNE hubbub was no coincidence. What better time to reveal the consensus cream of the Can-con crop than in the smack dab in the middle of one of the biggest festivals and conferences in the country? A perusal of the 40 albums that made the cut reveals a lot of the names I'd have expected, based on factors such as public profile, track record and oh yeah, artistic merit, [...]

The end of the decade is nearing a close as we here at The Yellow Stereo present to you our favorite albums of 2009. Even though we haven't been around since the start of the decade, I want to say on my behalf that it's been an absolute joy doing running this blog for you guys for at least the past three or so years. Hopefully, we can ride this ship far into the years that are yet to come. Joining the usual crew this year were (Pablo and Val) were two new writers, Nathan and [...]

* Reverie Sound Revue-Arrows * Reverie Sound Revue-Rip The Universe

Frank Yang As with pretty much every night last week, Friday came with a list of entertainment options a mile long, and while some more intrepid types tried to take in as much of it as possible via club and in-store hopping, I was content to settle in at the Rivoli for what promised to be an exceedingly solid night of music headlined by Vancouver's Dan Mangan . A bit of set time miscommunication meant missing much of The Sure Things' set but I did manage to catch their last few [...]

Frank Yang Everything I have to say about The Antlers' record Hospice has already been said , so I'll focus squarely on their live performance which I was able to witness yesterday evening despite opting to see Joe Pernice at the Dakota rather than their show at the Horseshoe, thanks to their booking an in-store at Criminal Records before either got underway. While they could easily have gotten away with doing something simple, short and stripped-down, the fairly packed store was instead treated [...]

Chrissy Piper The Mountain Goats have revealed (revelated?) details of their next album and rather than utilize more of his typically cryptic or obscure song titles, John Darnielle has instead opted to name all twelve songs on The Life Of The World To Come after Bible verses. Whether these are meant as shorthand for each song's real, divinely-inspired title or if he's just drawing thematic parallels is unclear, but what's for certain is that the title of the first released MP3, linked below, is easier to say (and type) than "So the [...]
