Tomorrow marks the release of Strapped , the new album by Californian noiseniks The Soft Pack. (You can stream the record at Spin right now, if you're so inclined.) For those not familiar with the band's history, they used to be known as The Muslims, a name that caused them all sorts of predictable problems and was eventually ditched in favor of their current moniker circa 2009. So, to celebrate The Soft Pack's new record, we thought we'd look at some of music's other great controversy-courting band names. Warning: naughty words [...]
In honor of Independence Day, KEXP is saluting some of our favorite indie record labels who's DIY-spirit helped revolutionize the music industry. As an independent radio station ourselves, KEXP is thrilled to give a 13-gun salute to these pioneers with a series of label spotlights through the Fourth of July. By Mel Trejo Before eventually evolving into a seminal label within the industrial genre, Wax Trax! had its beginnings as a record store. Business and life partners, Jim Nash [...]
Mark Durante - who was briefly in the Revolting Cocks - is Kevin Durant, a basketball player over a terrible nickname: According to the suit, filed Wednesday in federal court for the Northern District of Illinois, Durante has repeatedly demanded that the Oklahoma City Thunder's three-time NBA All Star stop using the nickname. He's also suing Nike, which he says has begun using a superhero version of Durant named "Durantula" as part of a shoe campaign, and Panini Authentic, which is selling photographs and basketballs with the Durantula inscription. The real sting is not that the [...]
Nachtmystium will release a new 73 called As Made later this month, and Invisible Oranges is now streaming the title track. (The other cut on the album will be a cover of Joy Division's "The Eternal" featuring guest vocals by Chris Connelly of Ministry/Revolting Cocks fame.) I've listened to the song three times now, and... it's definitely something new [...]

With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]
The ex-Ministry screamer revives his solo career with a masterpiece.

Photo Credit: Anna Maria Cerniglia As we reported back in February , Chicago metal heroes Sanford Park (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Twilight) and Jeremy Lemos (White/Light) have united with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Ministry/Revolting Cocks vocalist Chris Connelly to form the group High Confessions . The noise-rocker’s debut album Turning Lead Into Gold with the High Confessions is now available for streaming via Stereogum.com . Per Stereogum: The 5-song/50-minute collection’s a slow-release patchwork of dark clattering tones, drum rolls, drone, [...]
Sorry to everyone who expected to see this last week. Due to some unexpected laziness I only listened to new releases and didn't review them. There was general outrage and I won't do it again. Leave Your Sleep by Natalie Merchant - Sounds like Natalie really loves her some Sting. So much so [...]

Steve Shelley, the widely esteemed drummer of Sonic Youth and founding member of the Crucifucks , has a new side project rolling out this summer. The High Confessions will find Shelley joined by Chris Connelly, a former member of the Revolting Cocks , Ministry and Pigface . Intrigued? Wait, there's more. Their debut Turning Lead Into Gold with the High Confessions will be released this summer by Relapse Records . Among the label's heavy roster of underground metal bands is trippy doom act Minsk , whose bass [...]
While I feel that some of you are at a disadvantage on this one, not being from or living in Texas, this week's top 5 is "Songs About Your State". I left it kinda' open so you can pick the state you where you were born, where you live, or where you have lived. Being from Texas I am all sorts of proud to be a Texan and all that but I do realize that the 49 lesser states have history, color, tradition, and even songs written about them so I figured that we'd try this one out and see [...]

According to Pitchfork.com , Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley has formed a new band called The High Confessions with industrial rocker Chris Connelly, well known for his work in both the Revolting Cocks and Ministry , Sanford Parker of Chicago metal group Minsk and Jeremy Lemos, who is not only a member of Chicago experimental, psychedelic outfit White/Light but has worked as an engineer along side Bill Callahan and Jim O'Rourke. The band recently signed to Relapse Records [...]

Dannie Flesher, co-founder of Chicago industrial record label Wax Trax!, died last week of pneumonia at age 58. While the label has been gone for awhile (it filed for bankruptcy in 1992), its influence continues today . Wax Trax! artists include Ministry , Front 242 , Revolting Cocks and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult . After starting out in Denver, Flesher and partner Jim Nash opened the Wax Trax record store in Lincoln Park in 1978. The label was started in the early '80s. Nash died in 1995 [...]
We just received the following press release here at the MetalSucks Mansion. I don't usually like to just cut and paste press releases, but in this instance I feel like I need to do so in order to make my point. So: Ministry's Uncle Al Jourgensen is apparently in the Christmas spirit, having created a Christmas [...]

RevCo was one of Al Jourgenson's many (and uniformly excellent) Wax Trax! collaborative side projects that kept him entertained when not devoting time to his major label behemoth, Ministry . Of all of his side projects, RevCo , with its lurid tales of lecherous rednecks, motorcycles thieves, and perhaps most famously, for raising hackles on high profile goats via cheeky covers ( Olivia Newton John and Rod Stewart ), is far and away his longest running non- Ministry related concern. This go around, Al has passed the reigns to [...]
by Van Damned (ATX)I'll keep this short and sweet: basically, we got a nice three-day lineup to transition into November, which could end up going down as THE single best month for metal this town has seen in a whole minute. Stay tuned. This weekend though, we got some classic industrial metal, some classic deranged, psychedelic alt-rock and some classic instrumental post-metal. Plus, time falls

The fall here in Charlotte has become a true season for the freaks; with Insane Clown Posse properly decimating Amos' SouthEnd much to the chagrin of certain flamers and Halloween fast approaching, we now greet a true act of carnival-style darkness know as LuBriCaTour 2009. Who else would properly fit the bill of this Al Jourgenson-branded "mindfuckery" but Revolting Cocks emceed by the infamous Jim Rose? The answer is no one, and with California cock-rock a la Blownload tacked on there was no doubt that Tremont Music Hall would indeed see its converted warehouse walls shake in fear [...]
Metal Legacies is an ongoing memorial to extreme music pioneers who kicked the proverbial bucket way too soon. [MetalSucks contributor Corey Mitchell managed Eric Powell's band, 16volt, from 1996-1998. He asked Powell to write about his friend and bandmate, Raul Raven, for the Metal Legacies series.] by Eric Powell Life. It goes by too fast and comes at [...]
Ministry The Last Dubber 13th Planet Records 11 Sept 2009 by Jon Kerr With few exceptions, remix albums are the domain of the die-hard fan and are only ever appreciated in comparison to the original release. In this example, here we have a remix album of the career-ending fanfare that was Ministry 's The Last Sucker , the George W. Bush-themed album Al Jourgensen had intended to abandon the Ministry name with two years ago. [...]

ah the hidden treasures, lurking dusty behind shelves and in drawers and cupboards and shinyshinyboxes; in dvd cases, wrong cases, suitcases; used as bookmarks, balancing devices and in one case a stand for muppet toys. all these lovely treats hidden away for me to find as part of some elaborate logistical orwellian nightmare i call moving house. you know the book house of leaves ? you know the movie cube (and it's sequels (but not gleaming the cube))? that's my spare room. honest to christ. still haven't found my ted leo cd. have [...]
"The Cocks are cummin' to your town soon. Hide your daughters," warns industrial metal god Al Jourgensen. All who remember the power of the Revolting Cocks (also called RevCo) as support for Ministry last year will know to take heed. Perversion galore reigns supreme as the industrial madhouse announces a full-fledged headlining tour for 2009, its first ever in North America during its 20-year career. Properly inducting RevCo into the wide, wide world of North American headliners is none other than Jim Rose, who's quite the spectacle himself. Those who witnessed The Jim Rose Circus with NIN during the mid-90s [...]
