Oh the slippery slope of ranking rap & hip-hop on indie music blogs. Not that I totally consider MOKB an indie music blog though. Well, these are the rap/hip-hop albums I listened to and liked most this year. You may not agree and that's a-okay with me. Please feel free to point me towards others. In fact I encourage and appreciate it. Here is the listing. Reminder: DJ albums will have their own list later in the week. DERT's Sometimes I Rhyme Slow [...]
So, here we go. It's a long 41 days (2nd-to-last day, is of course, the "other lists" day), and I've got at least 80 songs prepared for this whole ordeal - every day you'll get the listed song, plus at least one more song by that artist, usually a remix, a mashup, or something like that (unless, it's a really popular song that I would get in trouble for having up. In that case, expect . There's no better time to get started than the present, so let's dictate the mic like Fidel does his nation. [...]
New dad Nick Valensi (wife Amanda De Cadenet gave birth to twins on Thursday) will be spending some quality time at home for the new few months. But the Stroke did manage one last gig at the star-studded, Hennessy-soaked "Global...
Having made such a botch on the subject of rap and knife crime , Callmedave Cameron is going to try again and meet a rapping singer . Conservative people say the meeting with Rhymefest is part of what they do: A Conservative Party spokeswoman said: "We feel it is important that, if we make comments like that, we meet the people involved. "David doesn't back away from anything he said and we are having a sensible meeting." Of course, if David doesn't back away from [...]

Rhymefest - Tell A Story For some reason "Morris Brown", from the new Idlewild album, reminds me of this song. They sound sort of similar to me. The main difference being that "Tell A Story" doesn't annoy the hell out of me, like the Outkast track does. Outkast are great at creating songs that sound kinda inventive, and then filling them with the most tired and shitty lyrical tripe imaginable.

For your first major album, you probably could do a lot worse than have Kanye West's name attached to it. Now, I'm not saying Rhymefest couldn't hang on his own, because he can. But that's just part of the hip-hop game these days: Get a big name on the CD sleeve and reel 'em in. At least Rhymefest, who won a Grammy for his part on Kanye's Jesus Walks , recognizes his debt to his fellow Chicagoan throughout most of Blue Collar , almost like he's playing Scottie [...]

It's honestly quite criminal that Rhymefest isn't getting a serious push from his label considering how dope his album is. I mean, I have a couple of qualms ("Stick" sounding a bit too derivative of David Banner's "Play", his drawl sounding too Kanye-ish at times, even though 'Fest very well may have invented it...), but my nitpicking aside, it's the best album I've heard since E-40's latest.

Picked up a bunch of CDs recently, I will try to get to them all over the next two posts. Random Song 1: Camera Obscura - Come Back Margaret (KCRW Session) Rhymefest - Blue Collar Buy Southern hip-hop has been dominating the rap market in the last two years. While Lupe Fiasco is snatching up all the hype (saw him on MTV...sigh) and all the credit as being THE up and coming Chicago emcee there is another talented dude lying in the background. Sure Lupe's sound is fresh and his track "Kick Push" is the hit of the summer don't over look this Rhymefest kid, he's no slouch. Maybe some of you where able to check him out on his record A Star is Born Vol. 1 released in 2005 (features a duo on "Build [...]

Play it: Rhymefest - Blue Collar For folks that thought it was a one-time 'dabbling' when Jon Brion collaborated with Kanye West on 2005's great Late Registration , it's obvious it wasn't, as he recently helped produce (along with DJ extraordinaire Mark Ronson and Kanye West) the debut album from Chicago rapper Rhymefest [...]
