Thao and the Get Down Stay Down – We the Common

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down – We the Common The new album from Thao & the Get Down Stay Down is a strong evolution of Thao Nguyen's unique sound. We the Common is full of the echo-y and shifting vocals, group chorusing, and accented drumming that fans have grown to love, as well as sampling from various new influences throughout the record. This album is "about wanting to be better and closer to people," Nguyen says, and "trying to be a part of the community I live in." She cites her volunteer work with the California Coalition for Women Prisoners as the inspiration [...]

listen: “we the common” – thao & the get down stay down

listen: “we the common” – thao & the get down stay down Thao and the Get Down Stay Down  have been keeping it pretty quiet since the release of their 2009 album Know Better Learn Faster .   According to frontwomen Thao Nguyen , there's a reason for that: It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording—in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into. Those themes will be explored with their new album,  [...]

Here’s a re-cap of Surfing On Steam’s Favorite... Here’s a re-cap of Surfing On Steam’s Favorite Albums of 2012 (20-11). The final ten picks are coming soon! 11. Lower Dens -  Nootropics Nootropics  is an album I regret not reviewing when it first hit the shelves. It’s heavy and personal. It lingers and haunts you like a bad decision, bad behavior in general. It’s the album I always wish Radiohead would have made, or maybe The Motels already made this record? Its music is filled with sparse atmospheric guitars and electronic colors. But no [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: “Django Django” by Django Django

Django Django - Hail Bop (Official Video)
London's Django Django combines tribal influences, tight production, and hook-laden synths to create a totally fresh, addictive sound.

Django Django - Hail Bop VIDEO

Django Django - Hail Bop VIDEO Django Django are a 4-piece outfit out of Scotland, and to simply classify their music into a single category would be impossible. NPR pegged them as being part Surf-rock, motown, blues, space pop, and Egyptian mixed in with Beach Boys harmonies and tribal rhythms. Check out the video for 'Hail Bop' below and get ready for their debut self-titled album which will be released September 25th via Ribbon Music. Album is already available digitally as well.

[Video] Django Django – “Hail Bop”

[Video] Django Django – “Hail Bop” Django Django "Hail Bop" Django Django front man Vincent Neff makes Sisyphus look like a little bitch in the video for "Hail Bop", as he effortlessly pushes a gigantic glowing orb up stairs in what appears to be the 502s/602s version of the future. I would say that you could read more about Django Django in the Song of the Day post I did for "Default", but seeing as it's been sitting half finished in my draft box for a few months [...]

Video : Django Django : “Hail Bop” Scottish band Django Django will be releasing their excellent self-titled debut on September 25th through Ribbon Music . The quirky art pop meets 60s psych-rock of "Hail Bop" received a spacey, video game world for the visual. It was directed by Daniel Swan. Watch below. Tour Dates: Sep. 20 - Chicago, IL @ Schuba's Sep. 21 - Chicago, IL @ Schuba's Sep. 24 - Los Angeles, CA @ School Night at Bardot [...]

Django Django sign to Ribbon Music, release video for “Hail Bop”

Django Django sign to Ribbon Music, release video for “Hail Bop” Django Django' s folktronica has been compared to the Beta Band for good reason: Drummer Dave Mclean is the younger brother of Beta Band and Aliens keyboardist John, and certainly channels his big brother's psych-folk polyrhythms. The British foursome's harmonic, stuttering canons and psychedelic synthlines have been making waves across the pond, and at their sporadic sold-out US shows, since the overseas release of their self-titled debut back in January. Fortunately for American audiences itching for more from the band, Django Django has announced their signing to Ribbon Music, which will reissue  Django Django digitally on August 14th, and on CD [...]

John Maus: A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material

John Maus: A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material Mr Maus comes forth here with an album whose title does just what it says on the can. Here are sixteen tracks spanning the years 1999 to 2010. A completists dream? Well yes, but thankfully a little more too. The songs arenʼt chronologically ordered but the titles are suffixed with their years in brackets so you can almost join the dots in his sonic life. North Star (2008) kicks off, finding us in lush but fairly familiar Maus territory, all synth swishes and stabs overlayed by his hallmark chanty vocals. Sometimes Oakey, sometimes Numan and sometimes even [...]

Have You Heard The New…John Maus Album?

Have You Heard The New…John Maus Album? The album I'm talking about of course is the Collection Of Rarities And Previously Unreleased Material being put out by Maus' current label, Ribbon Music . It drops tomorrow, but you can stream it at Gorilla Vs. Bear . So I've listened to it and it's really cool. Despite the fact that it includes songs from 1999 all the way up to 2010, the album feels impressively cohesive, and the quality is quite high overall, though perhaps the first half is stronger than the more experimental second [...]

premiere: stream John Maus – A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material

premiere: stream John Maus – A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material We've already heard a few standout tracks from John Maus ' forthcoming compilation of rarities and previously unreleased material , and now Ribbon Music has hooked us up with the mostly unheard ( unless you frequent MausSpace ), decade-plus-spanning, remixed + remastered collection in its entirety for your listening pleasure. We'll probably never know why some of these tracks missed the cut the first time around - see " The Law ," " I Don't Eat Human Beings ," and of course, " (Molly) " and [...]

If you told me this was a late-1970’s demo tape from Depeche Mode I wouldn’t question it. The Kraftwerk influence stares you right in the face, along with the gentle keyboard atmosphere and John Maus ’ distinct baritone. Not many musicians stand out like Maus. I mean, have you seen his live show? It’s like Jazzercize + Ariel Pink + Andrew W.K. Maus’ A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material  will be released on July 17 via Ribbon Music. Pre-order the special edition translucent pink vinyl ( limited to 500 [...]
