M. Ward & Zooey Deschanel : When I Get To The Border [ purchase dvd ] I'm a huge Richard Thompson fan, but I was surprisingly not excited about this theme. Maybe it is because I haven't found a Thompson cover that I love as much as the original. Which is not to say that there aren't many, many good ones. I found an article in which Thompson listed his 5 favorite covers of his songs, and he chose Bonnie Raitt's cover of "Dimming of the Day" as [...]

Richard & Linda Thompson : Shoot Out The Lights [ purchase ] I was merrily playing air guitar to the mighty riff of Shoot Out The Lights when I got notice of this week's Star Maker theme, so that was an absolute no-brainer. Richard and Linda went their separate ways soon after its 1982 release, but their grand finale lives on gloriously.
David Ignatius Walsh was the hometown hero, a lion of the pre World War II Boston Irish community. He had served as Governor of Massachusetts followed by five terms in the U.S. Senate, the first Irish Catholic to hold the post. He was a confirmed bachelor, somewhat of a dandy with a penchant for flashy [...]

Dan Zanes: Wonderwheel [ purchase ] I went to a weekend fair met someone while I was there we put flowers in our hair and rode the wonderwheel... It sure sounds like a carnival, thanks to a rollicking accordion, a bouncy beat, and a subtle surfer's acoustic groove. And that's the point, for sure: after all, Dan Zanes is a master of the seemingly-casual kidsong, when in actuality, every note and tone is designed to add to the perfect festive mood, the [...]
Richard Thompson was born in London in 1949. But his father was Scottish and, as a teenager growing up in the 50s and early 60s, Richard was not only exposed to Rock'n'Roll, and then Rock, but also to his father's apparently extensive collection of traditional Scottish music and Jazz. Which helps to explain why, although Richard is often described as a Rock guitarist, his songs actually don't sound very 'Rock' at all when you listen closely. His love for unusual non-Blues-based tunings has a Jazz feel to it. The drone-like hums in his guitar-playing, and even in his [...]

Richard and Linda Thompson - The Great Valerio ( buy ) I first heard "The Great Valerio" a couple days ago, and it stayed with me. I'm not a huge fan of Richard and Linda's brand of folk, that I fond a little too solemn and detached. But this song, the closer of "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight", is a wonder. Not only Linda's vocals and Richard guitar part are beautiful, but they really illustrate the song theme about an acrobat. For more info read this post in [...]

here are a few ida related cover songs for ida, the proclaimed missing link which you've no doubt seen on google's front page today. mp3: ida - for shame of doing wrong a cover of richard and linda thompson's "for shame of doing wrong" from last year's lovers prayers . mp3: ida - my fair, my dark a cover of the David Schickele song, originally appearing on the 2005 believer music comp and then reappearing among [...]

Well we've heard back from the lifeboat lady, and apparently our efforts ( here , and the aftermath here ) have managed to raise pretty much double the amount of previous years. This, frankly, is fucking brilliant news so massive thanks to everyone who came along - Dave & Michael from The Stormy Seas , Neil from Meursault , Dylan from Blueback Hotrod , a random hot chick from Mrs. Toad's work, Morgan from, er, Glasgow and Ed from 17 Seconds (& 17 Seconds Records ). Brilliant stuff - same again next year? [...]
Richard and Linda Thompson overcame the obstacles of a failed marriage to release Shoot Out The Lights , an album many people feel is one of the finest of the 80's.

babies know what's up. if i had the choice, i'd be one of those dancing babies, with an intense look of concentration. what would i be dancing to? damn right: richard & linda thompson - 'mole in a hole' (from hokey pokey )
Okay, I'm a day late. But in my defense, I'm sick in bed AND gearing up for the third last-minute cross-country move of my lifetime, so it's been sort of a weird period. And in reflection of that weirdness, some weird (and not so weird, I guess) tracks: Watch Me Disappear by Augie March, from Watch Me Disappear [BMG, 2008] // Download for Free Here It's interesting that Glen compares this track to "There is No Such Place." Hearing them back to back, [...]

An overburdening of parochial duties has seen the Reverend Doctor's evangelical work somewhat ignored over the last month. However, a period of calm reflection and silent prayer has given renewed strength and we are ready, once again, to continue spreading the good word. As a first step along the path to righteousness I travel tonight to watch Richard Thompson at the Irish Centre in Leeds. It is frightening to think that it is well over 30 years ago that I first saw Richard Thompson in concert when I went to see him and Linda at Leeds [...]

image by f ocus.finder via flickr i had no doubt i loved the internet. no doubt at all, but this week has been great for our relationship. it gave me new ipods, potential new homes, google documents for shared curating of letters to the bishop of london, link through's from new york magazine and great, great things for the horse latitudes. yes this week the internet has been good to me. and it gets better. friends from across the ocean or the other side of the city have used it [...]
Late last week I got a big headache. I never have headaches, so it was annoying. More annoying was the fact that it didn't go away after aspirin, after an hour, after the morning. I started worrying about worst-case scenarios: meningitis, aneurysm, tumor. Like I said, I never get headaches. And then there was the fact that the headache took away my ability to listen to music. Suddenly, everything -- drums, horns, Bobby Womack's vocals -- was too much. Rather than give up, I used my affliction as a filter, and went in search of the most soothing music in [...]

...Folk. Or at least, Folk Rock type stuff. Maybe not the stuff I normally post here at 17 Seconds, but as a blogger rather than an editor who has to answer to people...why not? I'm by no means an authority on this genre (arguably, I'm not an authority on any genre) but this seems to fit with what I want to listen to tonight). Fairport Convention -'A Sailor's Life.' mp3 Fairport Convention -'I'll Keep It With Mine.' mp3 Of course, [...]
