Norah Jones and friends deliver some good old country comfort.
Richard Julian, Norah Jones sideman and leader of Jones' side project The Little Willies, plays Midtown's Leon's Lounge this evening. Julian's 2010 Compass Records release Girls Need Attention m... Continue reading "Richard Julian: Norah Jones Mate Makes Midtown Stopover" >

Recorded in Norah Jones's home studio, Girls Need Attention showcases Richard Julian's gift for direct and often heartbreaking lyrics. These, paired with stark instrumentation and arrangements make for a timeless album of love and loss. Girls Need Attention , Richard Julian 's new album, is a musical atonement: vulnerable, honest, and painfully direct as it chronicles a break-up. Brooklyn-based troubadour Richard Julian has been creating his own unique brand of witty, refined and sprited folk/pop for over a decade, releasing a handful of excellent albums and touring with the likes of his Lower East Side friend Norah Jones and Suzanne Vega. New album Girls Need Attention, arriving May 4 via new label Compass, continues Julian's creative winning streak in high style with the songwriter laying out the detailed emotional facets of a lost love affair with a combination of cunning, sharply observed songcraft and a rejuvenated spark. Recorded at Norah's home studio and produced [...]

I would have loved to have been around for this theme – even in retrospect, I can read between the [state] lines of the mad scramble in being first to post, as all 50 finally were covered, albeit with some boundary-stretching. I read and re-read the entirety of submissions, as well as related comments, and feel fairly confident my picks below were not mentioned! The Nudes: Arizona [ purchase ] The Nudes (a.k.a. Walter Parks and Stephanie Winters ) [...]

Photo by Michael Halsband More than a year ago I went to something that I could have sworn I wrote about on here before, but apparently failed to. My girlfriend was living up by Columbia, and they have this little room in the basement of St. Paul's Chapel on campus there (they call it PostCrypt ) that they use for performances on Friday and Saturday nights. She had seen an ad for a special night with some special guests, so we went. So three singer/songwriter types sat up on little stools [...]

We're already nearing the close of 2008, which means nerds and obsessives like yours truly are thinking about what we're going to include on our year-end best-of lists. While my list of top songs isn't yet ready for public consumption, I thought I'd share some songs that will likely make my final cut, but haven't really been widespread hits. The playlist below includes some of my favorite underexposed 2008 gems: None of these folks are wildly obscure, but you can hear more from these artists at their respective MySpace pages, which [...]
I've recently been listening to the new (and fifth) album from Richard Julian called "Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes". It's a lovely mix of sounds with a distinctly Jazz/Blues/Folk undertone, although don't let that put you off if those aren't your thing. This album is full of lovely melodies somewhat like a Nora Jonesalbum. Not surprising then that [...]

This was a weekend of long-overdue fresh starts and spring cleaning: Time to retire old Jack, I'd say. And (!!) yesterday afternoon I sat in a coffee shop with a local illustrator/designer and discussed my concepts to redesign this site. He's making me a nifty new custom header image, and I think I am going to move Fuel/Friends over from Blogger to Wordpress. I would welcome any suggestions you may have for redesign, or help with the conversion process if you're a web-type because I am in the slow class when it [...]

Richard Julian has been kickin' around for a decade or so, although he hasn't garnered the attention that he deserves, which is a shame because in the heavily populated land of folksy singers/songwriters, Richard really belongs in the forefront. Although you might not recognize his name, he was/is a member, along with Norah Jones , of The Little Willies , who released an album of classic country covers along with some original material back in 2006. This last month, he released Sunday Morning In Saturday's Shoes , his fifth solo album. [...]
Richard Julian is joined by Mitchell Froom for an ultra-intimate night at Genghis Cohen on Saturday. Froom produced his new album Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes out now through Manhattan Records. A staple in the New York singer-songwriter scene for years, legend has it he tried to move to Los Angeles as a teenager but fate turned him back around to the East Coast. An unfortunate turn of
Richard Julian's Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes was released last week. It's a laidback collection of bluesy folk that I think will appeal to fans of Peter Mulvey or Lyle Lovett. Julian was... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**
I know we're a music site, but I'd be remiss in not mentioning another great/favorite art-form of mine: film! Most of you probably watched the 79th Annual Academy Awards last night, or part of it, hosted by funny lady Ellen DeGeneres. All in all I thought Ellen did a great job hosting the Oscars, capitalizing on her sunny demeanor and extremely likable wit via innocently humorous skits with Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese. Speaking of Scorsese.. It looks like the bushy eyebrowed director finally got some golden hardware to compliment a resume [...]
