Richard Skelton music is in the magic or tragic realm like opposite pools that are obsessive dependent of each other or two colliding parallel universes, its like entering the most beautiful enchanted forest and you know you are being watched, life and death are expecting you and something terrifying will happen but you still gaze at the forest and think how beautiful it is. "Black Combe" his delicate as silk, emotionally raw, full of repetitive resonance grief and epic fragmented soundscapes, scars embedded in rich melodies that are honest and pure and [...]

( email | facebook | twitter ) Richard Skelton has compiled his complete works in a 20-disc, 90-track, 12-hour box set titled *SKURA . The name is Proto-Germanic for "mark," or "tally," cousin to the English word score , a group of twenty. It is every bit as massive as it sounds. Among the 19 discs of previously released work was a disc of altogether new material. Track three was titled "Black Combe," a (relatively) brief signature excursion. [...]
Wow. What a weekend. I'm sure you're all out getting loaded, but some of us have to work tomorrow. I guess that's why they call it Labor Day, amiright!? Hi, I'm Evan. You might remember me from such drunken blog posts as this one I'm writing right now. Also last night's post and most of [...]
No better way to spend a Sunday night than grilling cheese dogs and brats with friends on Mt. Washington, drinking someone's home-brewed chocolate stout. I defy you to cap your weekend in a more enjoyable fashion. Holy shit I'm flying home tomorrow! That's awesome! What the fuck am I going to do first? Breakfast burritos [...]
( email | facebook | twitter ) 1. Top albums : The closing disc to Richard Skelton's 20-disc collection *SKURA comprises seven previously unreleased tracks, across 57 minutes recorded under four of his seven concurrent projects. There are few surprises here, yet when we're speaking of a composer of Skelton's caliber , that is good news. 2. Top albums : William Ryan Fritch will release his sophomore Vieo Abiungo album on August 30. Expect a bit of a departure from the first [...]

( email | facebook | linkedin ) Words often fail regarding Richard Skelton. His music is devastating, and his story is. Reviews tend toward a few, diligent, once-potent descriptions, terms like craft , haunted , and brilliant , but perhaps the best way to describe it would go something like this: Writing about this album is like describing last night's sunset. No two listens are alike. If words fail when describing a single track, this [...]

"Since the release of the genre-defining 'Marking Time', the music of Richard Skelton has been widely celebrated for its raw, organic beauty, its honesty and restraint. Whether the work has been under his own name or under one of his many shadowy guises (A Broken Consort, Riftmusic, Carousell, Clouwbeck and others) there is a level of skill, a sureness of touch, and an emotional resonance that is virtually unparalleled by his peers. 'Landings' is the culmination of four years of recording on the moors and hillsides of Northern England. The resulting album isn't simply a suite of songs [...]

( email | facebook | linkedin ) Ahh, January. The traffic is back, and the weather blows. Throats are sore, voices are hoarse, and there's not an Advil anywhere to be found. But what is the most difficult to bear: after 11 months of indignant resistance, the legions of music sites, webzines, MP3 blogs and rogue start-ups all start reading each other's year-end recommendations, taking note that much of it is rather ... good. So while the rest of you are putting [...]

During the first week of October I raised a very serious and very grave concern with my readers. A lot of us had trouble stomaching what I had to say, but I felt it necessary to both warn this audience about a gross disregard for the feelings of young people around the globe and also a gross act that could potentially be perpetrated in your state, town, or even your home. I speak, of course, about the issue of "Boomer Sex" - disgusting, old Baby Boomers engaging in sexual intercourse with each other. Oh God, I think I'm going to [...]

As the hangovers kick in for those industry bods who made it to the Mercury Music Prize last night (it was won by the XX if you missed it), so we're going to announce the winner of our inaugural Uranus Music Prize . A small team of writers (myself, Scott McMillan and Matt Poacher) decided on a list of records that we thought offered a true alternative to the usual fodder offered up, without the issue of having to spend money to submit your release of considersation... So, without further ado the winner is... [...]

"I am haunted by waters" – Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It Richard Skelton's recorded work has always had something of the alchemical about it; and as he refines and perfects his explorations and processes it's tempting to think he's approaching some grand unveiling, where he'll reveal a chamber of relics, residues of captured moments, of transmutations, crossings over he's made – crossings between the material and the non-material, between self and place. His latest release – From Which the River Rises , his [...]

The version of A Broken Consort's Crow Autumn just released by Tompkins Square is a new version of Richard Skelton's Crow Autumn, or rather it's a new version of the Crow Autumn and Crow Autumn 2 recordings (previously released on his own Sustain Release label), reworked into a cohesive and well-balanced whole, with a new [...]
Last night Nic and I consumed what will inevitably go down as a top ten Los Angeles burger. The "Dry Age Burger" at Oaks Gourmet Market on the border of Hollywood and Los Feliz is quite good. Theirs is (obviously) dry-aged, topped with Taleggio cheese, smoked bacon and a sweet-tasting jalapeno-pineapple compote. I don't know if it will crack the top five, but it will be close. I still have at least three more hamburgers to taste that have won "Best of LA" honors on other blogs. Then I have to begin the process of re-eating most of the finalists [...]

I thought finding out you could play Farkle on the Internet sounded the death knell for my ability to accomplish anything. Then today I found a free Java-based website where you can play Settlers of Catan online against people around the world. Needless to say, that revelation - coupled with a hangover from massive drinking exhibiion last night - has left me utterly incapable of focusing on a task any larger than my laptop's monitor. I'm not normally one to find myself in a comatose state following a night of partying. Usually I'm awake and good to go, [...]
"Hill and bone. Skin and heather. A memory is nothing more than this. Nothing more than touch. Pressed forms in the cold, grey earth, and the river, ever yielding" Albums by Richard Skelton are so bound up with context and circumstance that the act of writing about them as mere musical artefacts seems somehow to diminish [...]

Again Richard Skelton has proven that neo-classical works can unfold layer after layer of emotion while still holding onto higher concepts, non-traditional recording techniques and dissonance that reveals beauty. His latest album, Landings , released both on his own imprint Sustain-Release and on Type, is a masterful blend of location specific field recording and bowed instrumentation. The layers weave themselves into stark edifices of desperation, leaving very little room for sunlight in Skelton's world. The recording locations play just as important a part as the overlying music, with creaking barns, trickling rivers and wooded lots adding a spectral aura [...]
If I was ever going to see my name in The Wire magazine, chances were pretty high that it would be in the context of an advertisement for a Richard Skelton album. I can't tell you exactly what the quote was, as I've cut it out to send to my mum, but she did tell [...]
