Richard Walters crisp new EP, Young Trees, is perfect for the dead of winter. This is folkpop, high on melody and really pretty. Of the songs on the record, my favorites are the title track, Regretless and Infinity Street . Music for a snowy day, a glass of wine or a walk alone. Richard , who seems to tour endlessly, recorded this new music in hotel [...]
Pacing is...

At first glance, Richard Walters appears to have made the logical approach in moving onto his second album. The singer-songwriter, originally of Oxford but now residing in Paris, has deployed on these songs a full band and a broader sound to convey a wider range of emotions. However, much of Pacing was in fact written as far back as 2007, before Walters' well-received debut album The Animal was even released. Walters' collaborator, Bernard Butler - formerly of Suede - was distracted by other projects, resulting in this record's delayed completion. [...]

I've had a fabulous weekend, and find myself in an absurdly good, light-headed mood. But this is Some Of It Was True, and I'll never a little happiness distract me from a morose and maudlin song. In this case it's a pain-dazed effort from Oxford's Richard Walters , released last summer: recalling then dismissing a romantic moment, the fragile number utilises agonised string plucks, pauses and eye-closing oohs. It's majestic, but oh so lonely - like a perfect beach deserted on an ice-cold day. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Richard [...]

Yes, we're posting our Single Song Sunday feature a bit early this week. But infamously bipolar songwriter Daniel Johnston turns 50 today, and I can't think of a better way to honor his impact on the music world than with this collection of covers of his best-known composition. The hope and pain inherent in the brilliantly simple lyric and melody of this piece and many others have touched a nerve in many artists both well-known and obscure since Johnston's first cassette hit the streets in 1981, prompting a multitude of covers, [...]

I have been in a far off place all weekend. Quiet and contemplative and a little sad. I have been enjoying the cloudy, cold weather though. There is nothing better then putting on some music and hanging out at home during cold gloomy weather. Listening to a lot of great music lately old and new, just haven't had much time to share ... I have fallen in love with this song from Richard Walters . Beautiful. mp3: The Animal The [...]

[ download ] [tweetmeme] On July 6th, Kartel will release the debut LP from Oxford, England's Richard Walters , with critics and listeners alike bound to take notice. The Animal was written over a three year span, encompassing all of the emotional peaks and valleys one traverses over such an extended span. Walters' fragile vocals are exceptionally well paired with the airy, delicate instrumentation throughout; in conjunction, they conjure up the raw, nostalgic verve of The Clientele's early releases and the nimble mellifluousness of The Middle East 's [...]
Us vs. Them - Common Prayer [mp3] (myspace) Common Prayer is a Brooklyn group led by Jason Russo of Hopewell. This is the first track off their upcoming There Is A Mountain, which will be released digitally on June 1st on the band's own label in the US. A slightly grunged hard beat drives this piano/acoustic guitar number into a summer indie romp.Night and Day - Chief [mp3] (myspace) California

Ouch. I'm still recovering from Big Boi and Jay Electronica in Atlanta last night- what a way to start the long holiday weekend though! This week's mixtape's a bit short, but it's the quality , not the quantity, right? Tracklisting: Handful of Luvin - Born Lucky Jack Johnson - Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology Kanye West - Power (ft. Dwele) [...]

Quiet, fragile, soothing, and weak, words that you wouldn't associate with an animal—unless you were thinking about a rabbit. Richard Walters' album The Animal isn't quite what the title suggests. I was expecting something with a little more tenacity, maybe something more ferocious. Instead I was lulled to sleep by the tepid and unexciting album. [...]

When I interviewed Richard Walters a couple of weeks ago , I thought that he was a great talent. However, I had a niggling feeling in the back of my head that his debut full length would be a letdown, a mish-mash of cliché's that are half-hashed to make an album that's perfectly acceptable but not brilliant. I was wrong. "The Animal" is exactly what it says on the tin. It's an animal – vulnerable, has its good spots and its bad spots, but you love it nonetheless. [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Richard Walters -True Love Will Find You In The End (Daniel Johnston cover) Now, I know this is a slightly morose tune, but I really quite love the bauty and introspectiveness of this new Richard Walters track. Some of you may want to slit your wrists, but I personally love it. To go with this, I've not been able to stop watching this great video for Tegan and Sara's "Call it Off". I only [...]
