R.I.P. RICHIE HAVENS

R.I.P. RICHIE HAVENS Richie Havens, folk legend, died of a heart attack at the age of 72 at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Earth Day. Arriving by helicopter, Havens opened the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Due to a number of scheduled opening acts being stuck in traffic, Havens was asked to stretch his set to three-hours and, after running out of material, improvised the old spiritual "Motherless Child" which morphed into a powerful chant of what would later be known as his song "Freedom." [...]

RIP – Richie Havens

RIP – Richie Havens Richie will always be known for his opening performance at Woodstock.  He was not scheduled to be the opening performer but when the first four schedule performers had trouble reaching the festival he was asked to play in order to buy time.  In an epic performance he played for almost three hours straight, eventually improvising the song Freedom on the spot having played every other song that he knew.  It was a wonderful performance and one that made him famous. Here is an interview with Richie from the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. [...]

Remembering Richie Havens: When ‘freedom’ meant something different

Remembering Richie Havens: When ‘freedom’ meant something different On August 15, 1969, a not super-famous Richie Havens took the stage as the very first act to kick off Woodstock. He'd been told by the promoters that he'd need to play for hours since many artists were late and the festival was running behind. So he just started improvising. What came out was a rhythmic acoustic strumming and a single lyric, "Freedom," that made him instantly iconic, an emblem of the festival and the whole era. As much as Havens helped define the message of the time—"freedom"—the song defined Havens for the rest of is [...]

Album Review: Cherokee Rock Rifle- Ta-Li

Album Review: Cherokee Rock Rifle- Ta-Li Cherokee Rock Rifle enjoys an enviable status among the cool kids in Kansas City. In addition to being a good guy, vocalist Dutch Humphrey works as a bartender at one of the town's most fashionable music venues. His band, consequently, is a compulsory member of the in-crowd. That sort of reasoning has never swayed me. I regularly rip the music made by my friends and associates. I'm a jerk that way. Thankfully, I love Ta-Li , Cherokee Rock Rifle's new six-song EP, on its own merits. It [...]

Richie Havens: “Here Comes the Sun” (In Memoriam)

Richie Havens: “Here Comes the Sun” (In Memoriam) Richie Havens, 1941-2013 Legendary folk singer Richie Havens died yesterday at the age of 72, reportedly from a sudden heart attack. His was one of the most distinctive voices and styles in the folk scene of the late '60s and early '70s, attacking his acoustic guitar with unmatched ferocity while his deep voice alternately belted out strident protest-type songs and crooned soothing ballads. Havens was known as much for the covers he performed as he was for his own compositions, and while I admittedly am not very well-versed in his originals, [...]

Richie Havens 1969 Woodstock - Freedom
I don't remember writing Coffee this late on an ordinary day. Blame a restless night. I went upstairs about 12:30 followed by the parade of animals. We settled in, and I started reading. At the end of each chapter, I'd check the next one and see how many pages it had and tell myself that the next one would be the last. This went on until 3, chapter by chapter, as I just wasn't tired. Thinking I could drift off, I finally turned off the light but just couldn't fall asleep. Gracie was snoring at the foot of the bed [...]

We Lost A Legend

Richie Havens, Freedom, (Woodstock)
My friend Alex sent me an email titled "We Lost A Legend" regarding Richie Havens. It deserves to be shared... ...Richie Havens passed on today. I got to see Richie play about 18 years ago with about 100 other lucky folks at McCabe's Guitar shop in Santa Monica. He was a real cool dude. He was a big guy with these tremendous hands that could wrap fully around the neck of the guitar. He played these crazy open tunings so he would just throw his thumb around the top of the neck and clamp [...]

Richie Havens 1941 - 2013

Richie Havens - Freedom at Woodstock 1969 (HD)
I didn't know Richie Havens , but I certainly understood his music. Born years after his eternal performance on the stages of Woodstock in 1969, until this moment I have never known a world that Richie didn't already occupy with vibrant song. His rhythmic guitar, his percussive playing and bellowing voice asking for "Freedom" will continue to be one of mankind's finest recorded performances.. As a child watching that set for the first time some years later, I recall thinking that Richie Havens owned the entire world. You couldn't help but feel that way - watching [...]

RIP, Richie Havens

Photo by G. Richie Havens Sad news in the music world.  First we learned that Christina Amphlett of The Divinyls passed on this morning and in the evening, we learned that folk singer Richie Havens has died.  I saw Richie perform once as part of a birthday tribute to Pete Seeger, which is where the above photo was taken.  I hoped when they announced his name that he would perform "Freedom," which was one of my favorite performances from Woodstock.  I got my wish and as [...]

R.I.P. Richie Havens

Richie Havens is best known for being the first performer to take the stage at Woodstock - where he delivered a nearly three-hour set that eventually made him a star - but his career was loaded with notable moments. A very truncated synopsis: He came up in the Greenwich Village folk scene alongside Bob Dylan (and signed with Dylan's manager Albert Grossman); he released 13 Billboard -charting albums over the course of a 43-year recording career; he had acting roles alongside Dylan and Richard Pryor, and in the original stage presentation of The Who's Tommy and Todd [...]
