Richie Havens, folk legend, died of a heart attack at the age of 72 at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Earth Day. Arriving by helicopter, Havens opened the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Due to a number of scheduled opening acts being stuck in traffic, Havens was asked to stretch his set to three-hours and, after running out of material, improvised the old spiritual "Motherless Child" which morphed into a powerful chant of what would later be known as his song "Freedom." Richie will always be known for his opening performance at Woodstock.  He was not scheduled to be the opening performer but when the first four schedule performers had trouble reaching the festival he was asked to play in order to buy time.  In an epic performance he played for almost three hours straight, eventually improvising the song Freedom on the spot having played every other song that he knew.  It was a wonderful performance and one that made him famous. On August 15, 1969, a not super-famous Richie Havens took the stage as the very first act to kick off Woodstock. I didn't know Richie Havens , but I certainly understood his music. Born years after his eternal performance on the stages of Woodstock in 1969, until this moment I have never known a world that Richie didn't already occupy with vibrant song. His rhythmic guitar, his percussive playing and bellowing voice asking for "Freedom" will continue to be one of mankind's finest recorded performances..
