Next to share their favourites of the year is part man part canine Barry-Sean... What a fantastic year for music this has been for me. I don't just mean for music that has been produced this year but more about the music that I've discovered from previous years (or, more accurately in most cases, music that has been discovered for me). And, because I've spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to London on the train, I've had loads of listening time. Hurrah! So here we go. Here's my top ten songs of 2011. [...]

i attempted to come up with a top ten songs of the year list, but the problem with that is that a lot of shit is not postable. now, if you know anything about this site or me, i have rarely cared about the legalities or ramifications of posting questionable material. luckily, knock on wood, other than that one dick taper with the shitty westerberg bootleg i posted a few years back, i have not been asked to take anything down. still, to post ten songs that are off new records, and by bands/artists i know and respect, i just [...]

well, here it is the unofficial captains dead top 14 of the year list. i say unofficial because as there are a few more contributors lurking about, they may have their own top whatever list, and i hope they share said list with the class. not much has changed since i did my premature list back a few months ago. at least in the top 5/6 department. i went through the site and re-listened to everything i had tagged as "best of 20113 and after listening to these records, some changes definitely needed to be made. most notably the inclusion [...]
'No tricks' wrote poet and short story writer Raymond Carver in his short essay On Writing , and it's advice that Willy Vlautin, whose work as both a lyricist and novelist owes more than a little to Carver's terse, dirty realist takes on American blue collar life, has taken to heart. Attired in regulation plaid shirts and jeans (with the exception of bassist 'Mad' Dave Harding sporting an understated but fetchingly embroidered flowery number) with this band what you see is very much who they are. Like a more muted, downhome edition of Crazy Horse, the consistent excellence of [...]
Gambling, whiskey, cheap hotels and cheaper women, the songs of Richmond Fontaine tell the tales of being down and out in Reno, stoned and alone in a trailer park, stagnant lives in Mid-West US of A and some personal anguish as told by the often wounded, sometimes trashy and always larger than life characters met along the way. Lead songwriter and lyricist for the band Willy Vlautin captures a quixotic Americana. As a novelist, Vlautin covers similar territory. His first novel The Motel Life draws comparisons to John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men , a deeply romantic [...]

Can you remember what you were doing in 1994? I would have been ten years old, so I was probably watching Sharky & George while playing Scalectrix, however over in the Pacific Northwest of the United States Richmond Fontaine were just starting out on a career that would see them release some of the most loved and critically-acclaimed Folk/Americana albums of the past two decades. Now ten albums in, the band continue to go from strength to strength. Front-man and chief songwriter Willy Vlautin now also has three novels to his name and the [...]
Ten years of any music website is worth celebrating; especially so when it's a brilliant and essential one like Americana UK . And, blimey, they know how to celebrate: There's an event at the CUC in Liverpool on November 12th: We have curated a truly splendid line-up for what promises to be a very special celebration: Richmond Fontaine (Willy Vlautin and Dan Eccles acoustic set) Richard Buckner Mark Eitzel (American Music Club) Danny & the Champions of the World Plus other UK based americana acts including Redlands Palamino Co,Quiet Loner, Case Hardin, the [...]
FALL INTO DARKNESS: AGALLOCH, ATRIARCH, SEDAN ( Branx , 320 SE 2nd) Portland's metal scene is mightier than ever, and the Fall into Darkness festival invites you to three skull-crushing days of local notables along with imports up and down the West Coast. Tonight is headlined by one of our most gorgeous and blackest, Agalloch. I cannot stress the importance of earplugs enough. MARJORIE SKINNER RICHMOND FONTAINE, IAN MOORE, MERCY GRAVES ( Star Theater [...]

In my limited experience of Brighton one thing I've learned is that Coalition, tonight's venue, is one of those trendy sort of clubs where all the freshers go and blow half their student loans in a night getting wasted on £5 pints and vomiting everywhere with 'the lads'. So it was a bit of a turn up to see that Richmond Fontaine , with all their alt country and Americana leanings, were going to play here. Opening act Stiv Cantrelli got things going well though, despite suffering from being too close perhaps to [...]

Portland's finest Richmond Fontaine brought their UK tour to a close with a compelling performance at London's Scala on Tuesday night. Their support act was singer-songwriter Laura Gibson, also from Portland. She previewed new songs from upcoming LP La Grande, all of which were well received by the audience. The title track was particularly enchanting: the pulsing drums complimenting her sweet voice and strummed guitar. The album comes out in January, and is certainly one to watch out for. She also played a few older numbers, such as the beautifully bleak "Funeral song". The lyrics were stirring and evocative: "If [...]

The Independent previews the English translation of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84 . The Early Buzz 1Q84 was wildly successful on publication in Japan, selling one million copies in just two months. As a result, it's hotly anticipated here, too. The Guardian reported that "his publishers took the unusual decision to ask two of his regular translators, Jay Rubin and Philip Gabriel, to work simultaneously on the three books to speed up the production of an English version". An extract was published in The [...]

Zo mistig en desolaat als de foto op de hoes is het verhaal wat verteld wordt op The High Country, het achtste album van de alt.country band Richmond Fontaine uit Portland, Oregon. Zanger Willy Vlautin is naast muzikant ook een...

as i laid on the couch last night, cause thats where i have been relegated to the past month or so, but thats another story - nothing bad, i was listening to a record that shall remain anonymous. even though its still 85+ degrees here in new orleans, its almost the october, and the end of the year. so i gots to thinkin, at this point what are my top ten records of the year? so i started rattling off records, in my head of course, and came to the conclusion that this year, 2011, has been the best year [...]

Willy Vlautin has a way with words. As the chief songwriter for Richmond Fontaine , or as a highly-acclaimed novelist, he can spin magic into even the most humdrum of situations. "It's beautiful out here," he remarks to TLOBF as we conduct an interview in the fading light of an Autumnal dusk. Except it is not. We are on the Manchester University campus, in a quadrangle surrounded by ghastly 1960s architecture and a set of over-flowing rubbish skips. Okay, it may not be raining and the tolling of an adjacent church is nice, but we'd hardly describe [...]
After last week's embarrassment of riches, it's only fitting that this week's crop of new releases is a little more sleepy in nature. Two releases in particular, Megafaun's eponymous third release and Richmond Fontaine's alt-country rock opera, bring imagery of a joint dangling off the lips of a bearded hayseed, with a country-ish pastoral setting. Other new releases of note this week come from Jens Lekman, a reunited The Jayhawks, The Jim Jones Revuew, Nurses, Ivy, Boots Electric, Clap Your Hnads Say Yeah, Thrice, Van Dyke Parks, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Evangelista and the Mick Jagger-led super group SuperHeavy. There's also [...]
