has anyone seen "celebrity" rap superstar? it has to be the most god-awful show to ever disgrace the tube. i caught one episode and it actually caused me to feel very depressed. just cant believe people will go to such great lengths to sell their souls for an extra 2 minutes of f list fame. this is one of those instances [...]
The Bookshelf If you're familiar with alt. country band Richmond Fontaine, you'd know that lead singer Willy Vlautin's lyrics are wrought with damaged characters in need of saviors. With The Motel Life, Vlautin shifts formats from musician to first-time novelist, and while the medium may be different, his subject matter remains consistent. The Motel Life follows two down-and-out brothers from Reno named Frank and Jerry Lee Flannigan. Victims of circumstance, the pair lost their mother to cancer when they were teens, [...]

It is time to post another gosh-damned mix, it seems. It's kind of hard to keep up with all the decent music of the world, so there are only 9 songs this time around. But they're all pretty good, so that's a plus. I wonder if anyone's noticed that all of these mix intros sound pretty much exactly the same, but really they're just meant to be filler to push the songs past whatever ridiculous image I decide to add. This time, it's Happycat! Abigail Grush - Solitude Is Useless - (MP3, 3 [...]

Release Date: 22 May 2007 (Union / El Cortez Records) Richmond Fontaine's Thirteen Cities is an incredible album. Deep within the layers of guitars, horns, pianos, lap steel, and organs there are eloquent and expressive stories of despair, alcohol, and redemption. Full of real life imagery, this album captures a mood and style rarely reenacted in musical form. Moving Back Home #2 (mp3) Drifters, [...]

Portland's resident americana outfit, Richmond Fontaine, will see the stateside release of their eighth album, Thirteen Cities, May 22nd. Having already received near unanimous praise upon it's European release, the group's chief songwriter and vocalist, Willy Vlautin sat down with A.D. to discuss the evolution of Richmond Fontaine's recorded output and the recent release [...]

Even though the band Richmond Fontaine calls Portland, Oregon home, their music oozes with the flavors and sounds of the Southwest. Listening to their latest album, Thirteen Cities , I can picture the lingering desert smog over Phoenix or Albuquerque coloring the sunset deep shades of orange and red. That is due in part to the fantastically descriptive and real lyrics of frontman Willy Vlautin who (in addition to the band) just published his first novel The Motel Life which is being compared to the writing of Steinbeck and Carver. Lyrically, [...]
Ah, another review I'm horribly late with, but then I hope you don't come here for the rampant professionalism, as it may be a long wait. I went to see these lads a month or so ago at ABC2 and was blown away . There's an phenomenally personal, rich atmosphere to their live performances that is truly amazing and it opened my eyes to who this group really are in a way their recordings never could. This is no criticism of their albums, of course. You simply can't capture things like integrity, honesty and [...]
Well I was taught a bit of a lesson last night at the ABC2. Sometimes you go to gigs and they just rock (such as The Hold Steady ), or you witness a consummate performance of utter bedlam ( The Decemberists , for example) but tonight it was the sheer realisation that I had never quite twigged how good this band really are. One look at the discography on their website shows that Richmond Fontaine are hardly wet behind the ears, in fact I remember the Uncut reviewer being amazed [...]
Can we all agree that with seven albums under their belt and at least one masterpiece in Fitzgerald ( video for "Making It Back" from Fitzgerald ) that Richmond Fontaine is on the short list of great American bands regardless of genre (in this case a rootsy alt-country)? Richmond Fonataine's new record, Thirteen Cities , is out now in Europe but won't be released in the US til May. The record sounds like a slight departure for the band as they left the comfy confines of Portland for the rustic desert of Arizona. [...]
There are so many stray and random musical thought bouncing around my head at the moment I can't quite get them all nicely ordered and polished and standing to attention for inspection. So I will try and do it here - write a list, as Mrs Toad always says, and it never gets tedious. I've nevert been much of one for formatting mind (a traumatic experience with a barely literate boss a few years back) but I warn you there will be bolding, and there will be italics. No underlines though, that would be excessive. So [...]

From the opening moments of Richmond Fontaine 's new record, you are transported into the dustbowl of rural America. As the brassy, southwestern horn section explodes on Move Back Home #2 , you get swept up in record, and more importantly the stories that lead vocalist Willy Vlautin tells. At first, you might sense a familiarity with the subject matter. Down on your luck is a common theme for an Americana/country outfit, but combined with the horn work of Calexico, this surprisingly poppy opener describes a simple situation – a down and out man living [...]
I know that generally it is far cooler to casually arch an eyebrow and say 'Ah yes, but their earlier stuff was far better, don't you know.' However, with Richmond Fontaine , I just can't do it. Their earlier stuff was, in my opinion, no better than decent. And their really early stuff I'm just completely ignorant of altogether, so it's Johnny-Come-Lately all the way at Song, by Toad I'm afraid. A couple of years ago they released The Fitzgerald which was, somewhat amazingly considering it was the first to be [...]
one of my main character flaws is that i tend to obsess over shit. typically, its over stuff that is so ridiculous its almost embarrasing - you'll see here in a second what i mean. over the past couple of days it has come to light that i have a deep rooted hatred for star jones . she's like a gruesome traffic accident that i cant keep my eyes off. she has absolutely no relevance in my life, and most likely anyone with any damn sense or self respect, but i'll be damned if i [...]
