Dick: "Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels?" Barry: "No! The Righteous Brothers!" My life parallels to High Fidelity is not a secret. My comparisons of heart-wrenching fictitious music meant for someone else, to my life is scary. Or rather, somewhat absurd. But it's Friday and let's leave all that at the door and concentrate on my favorite scene from my favorite music comedy. All Dick asked was a simple question to Barry and what resulted was war. Who's version of Little Latin Lupe Lu is better and why? Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels or [...]

There are so many great love songs appropriate for Valentine's Day... I couldn't resist a post dedicated to some of the classic love songs! Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye Marvin Gaye's smooth lyrical stylings let him get away with some seriously dirty lyrics! He even won a Grammy in 1982 for his super sexy track. This song gets me every time. Amazon.con is offering one of Marvin Gaye's classic tracks Let's Get it On [...]

Ah Valentine's Day. That syrupy sweet, send flowers to your special someone, son of a gun of a shopping day holiday. If the lords of commerce didn't make off with all of your available credit over the Christmas/Chanukkah season then here comes good ol' February 14th to finish you off. But, but, you don't have to go spending money at the chocolatier, or Hallmark, to get the most out of this holiday. The way we here at EAR FARM see it, whether you've got a sweetheart or not, chances are you'll be listening to music today. And that's where EAR [...]

TWO FOR THURSDAY: Alex North Edition The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody Gabor Szabo - Love Theme from Spartacus A brace of themes today from film composer Alex North, born Isadore Soifer in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1910. See here for the history of Unchained Melody. I would like to point out that the otherworldly strings on the bridge ( "Lonely rivers flow..." ) make this arguably the greatest bridge in the history of recorded music. String arrangement by [...]
In third grade, our school bus ride home went down a hill past some woods-the trees are always bare in my mind-and a soccer field. Near the top of the hill, there was a bump where the road went from being slightly downhill to quite steep downhill. If you sat near the back of the bus and the driver was going a fast that day, you could get some air as the back wheels whiplashed over the bump. I'm sure it was not far-an inch or two-but our young minds thought it was a mile, that we were flying, momentarily [...]
Filed under: Rock Almanac Spinner.com : On This Date in 1965: A panel on the British TV show 'Juke Box Jury' rates 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling,' by the Righteous Brothers, as a "miss." One month later, it hits No. 1 on the U.K. and the U.S. charts. The Almanac Advises for January 9:... Read more

I've been reading Jerry Wexler's excellent, engrossing - but alas, out of print - autobiography , Rhythm and the Blues since I wanted to learn more about his life (catalyzed to do so by his death). Wexler talks about one of his protegés, Bert Berns, the songwriter and producer best known for his work with the Drifters, Van Morrison, Solomon Burke and a slew of others. One of the sources of Bern's inspiration was Latin music and Wexler shares how some of Bern's greatest hits, including the Isley Bros. "Twist and Shout" and "My Girl Sloopy" (better [...]

It's about time for a "Friday Five," no? This month I'm pretty excited about, because I've been mulling this one over for months since I was in a bar that had Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" playing. A college-aged girl stopped talking to her friends for a moment and listened to the music. After a few moments she twisted her face and proclaimed to her friends, "These aren't the words!" As I tried my hardest to hold my beer down and not go over and tell her what for and how it wasn't the song sampled [...]

This post originally began as a collection of cheesy theme songs, but eventually grew into a mass of songs from the soundtracks of movies I love and adore. A good majority of them are 80s classics since I was born in '81, but there are some newer and older gems mixed in too. I had a lot of fun gathering them, since just hearing them brings back tons of good movie viewing memories (read as: makeouts). It also reminded me of how much I've always wanted the opportunity to compile a soundtrack for a movie. I have no idea how [...]

Since this whole crazy deeleebob hails from Philly, The City of Brotherly Love, I have decided to throw together a list of bands with "brother" in their name. As usual, they are in beta-alpha-cal order. Wood Brothers ~ One More Day Waco Brothers ~ Nothing At All Scala & Kolacny Brothers ~ With or Without You (U2 cover) Righteous Brothers ~ Unchained Melody Neville Brothers Mills [...]
Unchained Melody is one of the most iconic songs of all time. The writer of this song, Lyricist Hy Zaret, passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 99. In his memory, I found some of the more well known renditions (and there are a lot to choose from): Elvis Presley, Righteous Brothers , U2, The Scene from the movie Ghost , Tom Jones, and Engelbert Humperdinck. There are two other songs which I had always attributed to others were in fact [...]

"Songs that last three minutes and forever. Phil Spector brought a grand, ennobling passion to the teen love song. His 'wall of sound' moved both bodies and hearts - launching what may be the most personal and stylistically unified series of mulit-artist recordings in pop history. That Phil Spector's hits will live on in the digital age is cause for celebration." - Kurt Loder, Rolling Stone In
My grandparents met in 1925 on the first day of school. My grandma was a junior, my grandfather a sophomore. It’s one of those storybook romances that you hear about; boy meets girls, wants girl, gets girl, loses girl, and finally makes it up to her. But in talking to my grandmother and recalling the endless amount of times I have listened to her throbbing heart of a story, she never ceases to
