It's an odd predicament in which Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello now find themselves firmly rooted: ten years on from the release of the pseudo-seminal, platinum-selling Give Up – a record the title of which appeared to forecast the creative inertia to come, for it remains their only full-length endeavour to date even though it's rung on in the ears of sophomore slumpers worldwide since – they're able to sell out the salubrious O2 Academy Brixton twice over, airing no more than two new songs in the process. Identikit setlists guide them through each evening, and there's an [...]

In the wake up Rilo Kiley and Standard Fare passing into the abyss of great bands, I've been looking for something to perfectly fill my need for girl-fronted pop rock. This latest single from Big Wave has me excited for what positive things are sure to come in the future from the group. While there may be some dark subject matter, you wouldn't be able to tell by the emotional pull of the music, giving off a powerful boost of energy. This new single is, as usual, brought to you [...]
In 1965, British Invasion greats the Animals had a hit with their cover of Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and now the former Animals frontman Eric Burdon has teamed up with the former Rilo Kiley leader Jenny Lewis to record another version of the song. This one is for True Blood , the HBO vampire melodrama that returns next month. The new version is, naturally, spookier and more atmospheric, and you can hear it at the KCRW website . A new True Blood soundtrack album is out 5/28 on [...]

I want to be your best friend

Graphic by Adam Kesner There's been a death among us - Rilo Kiley has officially, with out a doubt, broken up. Even though we all pretty much knew the band was over, this didn't make the news that Blake Sennet, Pierre de Reeder, Jason Boesel and Jenny Lewis wouldn't be making music together any easier to bear. Sure, there’s the recently released collection of deep cuts and unreleased tracks RKives , but that just makes us miss them even more. After all, for a lot of us (certainly for me) [...]

The gentle opener to Rilo Kiley’s compilation of near misses finds Jenny Lewis cooing "I’m leaving you… for the palm trees which bow their heads." And when Rilo Kiley went major label and released 'Under The Blacklight', it did seem for a brief, sunny interval that this was the dysfunctional rock outfit to shed their relative outsider tags and embrace the golden vistas of the mainstream. But it didn’t work and we’re left with 'Rkives' as a post-mortem. Post-mortems are never welcoming events and this compilation veers from the ridiculous (the remix ‘Dejalo’ recalls the depths [...]

Margaret Thatcher died today. Many people have opinions on this. Yet I would rather serve you up a dish of lovely music. Mac Demarco... that for me is the riff of the year. Bromheads...this reminds me of playing tig. New National music can only ever be a good thing. Rilo Kiley, I'm late on this one but I like it, bittersweet loveliness. Kazyak, the prize of the loveliest melody I have heard with this dreadful [...]

As happy as fans will be with the new music, it's good enough to remind them to be sad that this stuff might be it. It's been six years since the Rilo Kiley's last album (although the official band break-up came a while later, with the group at its career peak, having released its first major-label album, Under the Blacklight on Warner Bros.). Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett continued to put out other quality music, but none of it could quite match the highs of the Rilo Kiley albums. Now RKives shows up with sixteen rare or unreleased recordings. [...]

Given and Taken in Ink's mixes rarely have any thematic connection, other than genre and the time when most of the songs are released. So far the lone exception was our most popular mix on 8tracks, Sad Songs for Summer (2012) . And while it wasn't quite intentional, The Beginning of Spring works in much the same way (albeit not sad, and not summer...but you get the picture). Due to the whole birth-of-first-child thing, I haven't really had a chance to feature some of the big albums that were released in [...]

Whatever happened to Rilo Kiley ? Poised for success, the band seemed to implode after the release of 20072s Under the Blacklight . Led by singer/guitarist Jenny Lewis and guitarist/singer Blake Sennett, Rilo Kiley had gone from cute indie pop band who could do " The Frug, " to a sultry machine whose previous lead single, " The Moneymaker, " featured porn stars in its video. Since '07, Lewis has gone on to become a fairly successful solo [...]

The news of a new Rilo Kiley album created a stir of excitement. When Rilo Kiley broke up five years ago...it was done right as the band was hitting their stride. There is something to be said about going out on top...though it sucks for the fans. But hearing that a potential reunion was in the works everyone was on their toes, especially after the multiple solo albums. Hearing it was just

The unofficial saying of Austin, Texas, is “Keep Austin Weird.” After stepping into Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds, easily the world’s most intimidating costume store, I realized why. I was overcome with sensory overload, from the male store associates clacking around in stilettos to the sparkly space suits staring me in the face as a strange, musty smell lurked over the entire store. After my friend found a seemingly standard fringe jacket, an employee approached her, saying she would grab something great to complement it. She returned with a giant bunny head . [...]
Let’s not front — it’s been a long six years since Under the Blacklight, Rilo Kiley’ s last release as a cohesive musical unit. I can’t speak for every fan, but in my own personal trajectory, I’ve gone from a shy college freshman with an undeclared major and too many pairs of ripped Vans sneakers, playing “Silver Lining” on a loop while holed up in the library, to a (mostly) functional adult woman who even gets out on the weekends. When the band announced that they were splitting up in 2011, after 13 years, I was [...]

Shawn Brackbill You have to wonder in Kurt Vile ever regrets leaving The War On Drugs after touring their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues , considering the level of success the Philadelphia outfit would achieve with their second album, Slave Ambient . Or maybe not. Given that Vile's laid back, groovingly psychedelic guitar-rock travels a fairly parallel path to what Adam Granduciel is doing with The War On Drugs, their fanbases probably overlap pretty significantly and Vile's own 2011 effort, Smoke Ring [...]
