However, along with the new music I enjoyed, I also discovered a lot of music that I totally stupidly slept on. Whether it was the artist or just the song, apparently I just wasnt paying attention at the time. I mean, really, who expects a band with a flute player to be rock 'n roll? Normally, I try to clear all expectations of a band before I go and see them live. But in this case, after listening to and enjoying their album a few times, I built up a few assumptions. The studio album plays like a soft, elegant soundtrack to a dream. With songs like "The Lamb" and "Boatman," the melodies and echoes abound. [...]

There have been many bands who've come and gone without much notice, but then there were those bands that announced their break up and you weeped for a few days straight with their best album on repeat (No? Just me? Oh...). You know this is an ominous fact that's bound to happen to most of your favorite bands (unless they're from the 60s/70s; the drugs were different then). I think it might have started with Raggedy Anne and then maybe moved on to Pippi Longstocking, but the crimson haired gal that has held my attention the longest is the lovely Jenny Lewis. My interest in Jenny started in the late '80s with the classics (well, classics to me) Troop Beverley Hills and The Wizard. In both films, her characters were sassy and cute and had a take-charge kind of attitude. From those first movie roles I saw, she seems very much like the real life Jenny that I love today. From "(Sitting At The) Dock of the Bay" to "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" to basically any song by Andrew Bird (the indisputable whistle king), it always adds a little something that makes the track burrow deep inside your brain. One recent example is Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks", which turned a catchy melody and even catchier whistle into a massive crossover hit (it even inspired a cover version by Weezer ).
