Several members of the indie five-piece super group had already arced their career, joining and leaving popular bands like Rilo Kiley , Phantom Planet and the Like . Thankfully, after one drunken night of karaoke, these rock [...]

Gino DePinto, AOL While they're in town for the CMJ Music Marathon , indie supergroup JJAMZ is stopping by Spinner for a special live-streaming performance on The Interface . The set kicks off today (Friday, Oct. 19) at 4PM ET. Featuring Z Berg (the Like ), Jason Boesel ( Rilo Kiley , Bright Eyes ), James Valentine ( Maroon 5 ), Alex Greenwald ( Phantom Planet ) and Michael Runion, the quintet will perform four songs from its debut album Suicide Pact [...]
Jenny Lewis impressed us with a terrific live performance Wednesday night at the Fox Theater.

I've been digging on the band JJAMZ (comically pronounced with a stutter on the "J") for a bit now, especially the slick Madonna-spiked synth-pop number "Heartbeat." JJAMZ is more or less a group of friends from successful Los Angeles-area bands like Phantom Planet, Rilo Kiley, and The Like. What really caught my eye though was the inclusion of Michael Runion, a promising songwriting and commanding performer I caught a few years back in an opening slot for Jenny Lewis. Runion plays yin to lead singer Z Berg's yang on the group's very best songs, providing playful call-and-response vocals [...]
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Press Here It's not that members of JJAMZ weren't willing to consider other names for the band, it's that they didn't need to. The musicians, friends for most of the past decade, conceived of and formed the group (pronounced "Juh-Jamz") the same night they started writing songs for their recent debut, Suicide Pact . It all stemmed from a karaoke outing when [...]

Like many of you, I've been spending a lot of time today digging into Pitchfork's People's List and, while I think the 27,000+ voters got lots of stuff right, there was also plenty of albums I thought were criminally overlooked. So I turned those harbored resentments into a list (because that's just what bloggers do, right?). So, these are my picks of the albums from 1996-2011 that were robbed of their deserved People's List glory by the 88% male, urbanites that voted in this thing. I limited myself to one album per artist (otherwise you'd be getting a [...]

Back in 2006, Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins released the excellent indie-pop record Rabbit Fur Coat . It was one of my favourite albums that year and a million times better than Jenny's solo effort, the patchy Acid Tongue . Jenny toured the US and Europe (even stopping off at Oxegen) promoting the album, and played Numbers at Houston, Texas on 22nd of October 2006. Download the full bootleg of that show below. Thanks to midnitcafe for the upload. Setlist/Tracklist: Intro Run Devil Run The Big Guns You Are What You [...]

While Jenny Lewis has undertaken solo projects before, she's amping up her efforts just as the one-year anniversary of Rilo Kiley's break-up passes. As IndieWire reports (via SPIN.com ), Lewis will serve as composer and music supervisor for the indie film Very Good Girls . Written and directed by Naomi Foner ( Bee Season , Losing Isiah ), the film will star Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen as friends whose mutual interest in a boy threatens to tear their friendship asunder. According to IMDB , the film is currently slated for [...]

It's been two years since Jenny Lewis' last studio LP with Johnathan Rice, but now a pair of new projects are on the way - her first since Rilo Kiley broke up last summer. In addition to Rilo Kiley's long-awaited B-sides collection ("We've been listening and sorting through all these songs from 1998 and just the tone of what I was writing back then was so sad, so dark."), Lewis is halfway through writing the follow-up to her sophomore solo record, 20082s Acid Tongue , and composing the score to writer/director Naomi Foner's forthcoming feature, Very Good Girls [...]

Every [two weeks?] Jamie Hale takes a long, hard look at the music industry and the blog scene that feeds it. Here, he releases those findings and makes snarky, sarcastic remarks. Admittedly, both Jamie and Knox Road are a part of this scene. So sue us. Here in Pocatello, an Idaho mountain town of 50,000, there is a blink-and-you'll-still-see-it kind of music scene. That is to say, there aren't many people who actually play music here. In that scene, it's easy to notice guys like Shawn Barnby. As I understand [...]

Heartbreak, like tall ships, can be delicately placed in bottles under the right circumstances. Folded up to pass the knave and then opened up in its container, these bottled ships represent a little slice of something terribly large reduced to manageable, something that could reasonably be placed on a bookshelf. Portland, Oregon outfit Wild Ones do exactly this on single, "It's Real". Organ and synth chords provide the underlying architecture of what is ostensibly pure indie pop, a digestible blend of Stars and Rilo Kiley circa 2003, a slow-drive disaster [...]
