The horn-enriched band releases their latest, more concise, album.
So we're having some technical difficulties with the site right now :/ ... as you can probably tell, everything that's normally on the right hand side (---->) is now at the bottom for some reason. We're working on fixing it as soon as possible, but in the mean time here's some music while we figure things out.. I thought RipTide only did over-the-top electro with loads of bass, but after
Beirut 's latest endeavor, The Rip Tide , is an attentively orchestrated showcase of Zach Condon's sincere and embracing songwriting technique.

Zach Condon of Beirut Zach Condon is a tough guy to categorize. The Gulag Orkestra , his debut album with the band Beirut, was a hectic homage to Eastern Europe, inspired by a trip to the Balkans. His second album, The Flying Cup Club , was a love affair with French language and culture. On the new Beirut record – now streaming on NPR —the Euro influences are still there, but the presiding spirit is old-fashioned American pop. On the first single off The Rip Tide , Condon borrows from “Spanish [...]

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t really listened to Beirut until the inception of ThisBonusTrack.com last summer. I remember I was in the car with Pooch one afternoon when I heard Postcards From Italy for the first time. Although I had probably heard it at one point or another before that, I guess I wasn’t conscious enough to peruse to the infectious triumph I can now attribute to Zach Condon (more commonly known as Beriut). After doing a little bit more research, and getting myself a copy of his 2006 [...]
Beirut’s The Rip Tide is not much different from 2007s The Flying Cup Club. And at a time where Indie music has been moving away from dreams of old Europe and towards modern synthesizers, it seems like Condon is holding onto something. Despite Condon’s claims that The Rip Tide is somehow sunnier than The Flying Cup Club, there’s really no progression between the albums. If something may be said for Condon’s vision, his vocals are deeper and more entrenched in cultural lore (though not experienced first-hand) than the ever-more-popular auto-tuned voice. Condon has visions of old Europe, a dream of [...]

NPR's First Listen series is currently streaming the new Beirut album, which isn't due out until the end of the month. After just one listen, I am already a huge fan of The Rip Tide . No surprise here though, I have devoured with great pleasure everything that Zach Condon and company have previously released, and I think this album will be no different. Musically it picks up right where they left off; another gorgeous baroque pop album with some absolutely fantastic arrangements. It's a short record, clocking in at just over 33 minutes, but it packs [...]
Beirut , or 25 year old New Mexico native Zach Condon , has certainly kept his devotees waiting for The Rip Tide . It’s taken four years for him to record and release the follow up to 2007’s critically acclaimed The Flying Club Cup , and his newest effort sees Condon more considered than on its predecessor, and debut Gulag Orkestar . Sonically and thematically, both of his earlier releases were very much tied to a particular area of the world, Orkestar [...]

Beirut’s third full album finds Zach Condon and company pulling back from the globe-trotting dalliances of their earlier efforts, in favour of a lush summation of their musical expeditions to date. From its simple titles to its clear melodies, ‘The Rip Tide’ is, by some distance, Beirut’s most accessible record. The album opens with sixteen bars of reed organ, a warm-up of measured breathing before the brass riff of ‘A Candle’s Fire’ throws open the curtains and lets daylight in. There’s a celebratory confidence to the song’s arrangement that suggests Condon is knowingly in full control of his [...]

Zach Condon makes music that sounds bigger than it truly is. This fact is made apparent throughout The Rip Tide, Beirut’s first new LP in four years. And while the band’s previous works have had a ‘world music’ quality to them, the new album is focused on American locales and could even be considered to be a “Zach Condon album” more than anything else.

Beirut’s The Rip Tide is out August 30 on Zach Condon’s very own Pompeii Records . Few predicted the inward journey Beirut leader, Zach Condon, would achieve on The Rip Tide, an album with the most introspective and memorable songs of his young career. With songs that speak of love, friendship, isolation, and community, touching on universal human themes that are less fabricated stories than impressions of life at a quarter century of age, the album exposes a depth of honesty...
