A Place To Bury Strangers' exclusive Record Store Day release "Strange Moon," is a tribute to Portland punk veterans Dead Moon on 123 colored vinyl (for those vinyl fetishists out there). In conjunction with the record, the band released this statement: "I first saw Dead Moon perform around 1992. Dead Moon was my friends favorite band and soon to become one [...] The post A Place to Bury Strangers does Dead Moon, and the Question of Covers appeared first on Your Music Is Awful.com .

Sure, part of that's the dozens of internationally recognized hit songs they recorded, but there's another side, too -- their cultural impact. This week in musical history is a perfect example of that [...]

Every week we bring you Friday on My Mind , a collaborative effort with King 5 News which explores musical subjects with focus on three artists or bands. February 3rd is the anniversary of what people refer to as “The Day the Music Died” when Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie lost their lives in a plane crash. Today for the Friday on My Mind feature, we choose not to focus so much on the horrible tragdey of that day in 1959, but to celebrate and reflect upon the longstanding impact these young artists made within [...]

Repost: Published in 2009, still of interest today. To this day, people still mourn the musical talent who died in a plane crash in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 1959. A small airplane, carrying rock stars Buddy Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens, crashed only minutes after taking off from Mason City, Iowa, in a snowstorm. The three had just played the "Winter Dance Party" (see yesterday's post ) and were heading to the next stop in [...]
Ish Marquez is the hidden light at the end of the otherwise tedious anti-folk tunnel. He has the melodic gifts of Arthur Lee, but without any of the failed lyrical obtuseness. Someday there will be a compilation to sand over the numerous repetitions in his discography, and America will finally take notice of him. He

This track would’ve been up sooner, but with the great Blogger downtime last week, I never got around to freaking this for the main site (although it did grace the tumblr). To celebrate Ritchie Valens ’ recent birthday, Mr. Miranda dropped this EP, solely produced by Mute , with a dope collection of tracks. I love how, with the Internet today, we can hear stuff like this, instead of the normal cavalcade of tributes and whatnot. Ain’t no one foxing with Ritchie like that, and to hear Mute open these original samples up and [...]

NWLA (New Weird Latin America) is the continuation of the legendary and inspirational Mexican netlabel The Poni Republic . Although the music collective has evolved into a music news portal, they’re still holding EP/album releases as their main dish. Today they released their most conceptually-driven (and wonderfully ambitious) album yet: a tribute to Chicano rock father Ritchie Valens. Trying to put Valens’ legacy into words is as challenging as trying to understand the icon died at just 17 years old. NWLA recruited nine acts to pay tribute to the artist in the album Little Richard of the [...]

Ahh shit... I'm always a day late and a dollar short. It's all good tho better late than never. The homies Mr. Miranda and Mute let the The Richie Valens EP go yesterday... Classic! "Today is the bday of a special individual that changed music not only for hispanics, but for all musicians in general, the late great Ritchie Valens. In honor of his legendary status in the music industry, Mr. Miranda and Mute decided to [...]

Honouring the late great Buddy Holly, who died at 22 in a Minnesota plane crash with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on [...]

One of the most famous Texans, Buddy Holly, would've been 75 this year had he not hopped on that horrible little commuter plane in Iowa with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens ( NO, NOT MY RITCHIE ). A special compilation album has been put together by music supervisor, Randall Poster (past works include projects with: Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes), with a list of contributions by some heavy hitters. You can get the latest on the release here and pick it up on June 28th via Fantasy/Concord. BTW, I never saw " [...]

A few months ago we ran a competition giving Cougar Microbes readers a free copy of TuneUp to fix their music collection. An early rock hit gets a harder edge as part of a neat covers game.

I remember when the news broke about the 1959 plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly , Ritchie Valens , and the Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson), along with the pilot. But I didn't realize at that time how Valens' death affected the Chicano rock movement. Valens was the undisputed star of the Hispanic pop music world. When he died it was a sad day for music fans everywhere, but it hit the Southern California area especially hard. That might have helped provide an opportunity for new stars, and [...]
