1) Cursive - When Summer's Over Will We Dream of Spring Have we ever been awake? Have we done a thing? When summer's over will we dream of spring? Tim Kasher ci aveva preso sforando [...]

So tomorrow is Easter, and for most of us on the east coast here, that marks the mental beginning of Spring. Avoid those god-awful popcorn jellybeans (seriously, vomit tastes better), go find the eggs Jesus laid or something, and rock out. Words by Rick Moslen Growing up, many of us believed in punk rock but never considered ourselves "punk." We moshed at shows, bought $3 Epitaph compilations, and complained about Green Day not being a real punk band, but despite a few oddly colored hair manifestations, we never looked the part. Then high school arrived and we discovered Fugazi (cue Handel's Hallelujah Chorus). Not only did they look like regular dudes, but their aesthetic was as essential as the music. My high school punk band suddenly sported Fugazi -esque principles: [...]

What's that they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men? Oh right, mother nature doesn't care about your best-laid plans, and she's going to do what she damn well pleases. Heavy storms have become a recurring theme at Rites of Spring, an otherwise fine mini-festival held on Vanderbilt University's campus every April. Just like last year, one of the days was delayed and cut short resulting in many acts being canceled. This time around, the storms came on Friday. The gates were scheduled to open at 4 p.m.. They officially announced a delay shortly after, with an open [...]

While this past weekend may have meant a free Monday off from work (thanks George Washington), this was not the case for festival planners around the world. As the first signs of spring triumph over the winter freeze, we crawl closer to the festivals we've been waiting for all year. In the spirit of the current season, South by Southwest continues to snowball, collecting premier acts faster than momentum, and ensuring it as a force to be reckoned with. However, a somewhat quiet yet formidable resistance has been forming among the European ranks. With major lineup announcements/additions/rumors spreading [...]

Click to Enlarge Here is Rites of Spring live on WMUC in College Park, MD during the winter of '85. The recording is pretty blown out in places, in fact it's totally blown out in places, but it's still a fun listen. It's a piece of rock history. Hear the band that's credited or accused (depending on how you look at it) of starting what the term "emo" used to mean! Check all the polite clapping after each song. Weird! Awesome! One of the biggest perks of attending a large, diverse university is the free stuff student organizations manage to round up for the student body. Besides all of the free Chik-Fil-A, sodas, and t-shirts, schools usually put on free concerts too. While, some of the lineups do end up looking pretty cheesy, Vanderbilt University has been putting together stellar bills for almost 25 years. Early versions of their Rites of Spring Festival featured names like Bo Diddley, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Roots, Run DMC, and the Violent Femmes [...]

Chicago-based, fourth-wave (count on your fingers and start with Embrace or Rites Of Spring ...) emo superheroes Castevet finally released its The Echo & The Light EP on 12" in mid-August. The set was originally set to see release on Big Scary Monsters early in 2010, but the quartet and label parted ways before the set hit racks, which created an opportunity for Tiny Engines to step in and deliver an expanded, re-recorded version of the goods (the iteration contemplated for release by BSM only had six tracks). Louisville's Coliseum has a new album, House With a Curse , out today. And in honor of the hellacious record's release, frontman Ryan Patterson will be taking the reigns of Buzzgrinder today. I'm currently reading the flawed, yet enjoyable Spray Paint the Walls: The Story of Black Flag , which has not only put me onto a serious Black Flag kick (I forgot how awesome the Slip It In and Loose Nut LPs are!), but has gotten me thinking about my [...]
