I've finally made up my mind - it'll be the Riverboat Gamblers tonight, barely eeking out a win over the Detroit Cobras. It's rare enough in Tucson that I have to choose between two good shows on the same night, which is why it's so shocking that a random Tuesday at the end of May has such a dilemma. There's the combustible punk rock of the Riverboat Gamblers - regularly touted as one of the best

Texas act Riverboat Gamblers recently dropped their 4th studio album, Underneath the Owl , which has all that makes the Riverboat Gamblers so great and the extra goodness of xylophone. The band is wrapping up a headlining run in support of this album's release and following their SXSW performance. So those of you in the Midwest this weekend-I'm looking at you Chicago, Lawrence and Oklahoma City-catch these guys this weekend. After a little break the boys will be joining up with Rise Against / Rancid to [...]
Last night's show was hosted by a Justice League-like collection of artist from Green Label Sound . Matt and Kim , Kuroma, Cool Kids and Flosstradamus were all on board as well as videos from Doves, Silversun Pickups , Riverboat Gamblers and Passion Pit. It's all here for you incase you spent last night doing something (or someone?) your mother would disapprove of?
Reasons for attending this gig: 1) Been meaning to check out Fake Problems on both plastic and in flesh for over 1 year. Double fail, to date. 2) One of only a few left at the semi-legendary Manhattan Knitting Factory location, before they up sticks and move (like everything else NYC musically-inclined) to Williamsburg. 3) The Riverboat Gamblers singer is several screwdrivers short [...]
It's 2009: welcome to the kinder, gentler, more-hooks, less-snarl Riverboat Gamblers . Some might call this song a "sell-out" while others may dub it "a hit". Either way it's catchy and catchy sells records. And when the record biz is as slow as it is and you have been on the grind as long as these guys have you can be excused for wanting to put something out that will pay the bills; you have to let some sh*t slide people.
Before listening to their most recent album Underneath The Owl I’d never really given The Riverboat Gamblers much of a chance but this new album of theirs is pretty slick. It is some rockin’ punk-n-roll that sounds (a lot) like it could be plastered all over so-called modern rock radio. Their sound reminds me (quite a bit) of Communique/American Steel and other bands in that vein. The one thing about Underneath The Owl that is readily apparent right from the get go is that they love huge choruses; big, soaring, anthemic, sing-a-long, stadium-sized [...]

Lots of talk about Bishop Allen , Cursive , The Number Twelve Looks Like You and the new Punk Goes Pop collection. Hate to say it, but I'm not really looking forward to any of them much. A few that might get overlooked: Mirah 's new release is awesome. Portland's repping pretty strong these days. Bell Orchestre should be interesting. Includes a couple members of Arcade Fire , which automatically draws it some bonus attention. Time will tell if [...]

Who am I look forward to seeing at Summerfest this year? Right now, The Riverboat Gamblers are at the top of my list. Their new record, Underneath the Owl , drops next week. Texas punk-rockers Riverboat Gamblers are set to release their fourth album, Underneath the Owl , on March 10 on Volcom Entertainment. The band have made a name for themselves by creating rough, raw punk music that hearkens back to the glory days of the genre and for playing explosive live shows. The new record doesn't exactly broaden their musical or lyrical horizons, but the fiery guitar riffs, anthematic choruses, and frenetic energy make for an exciting blast of straightforward, no-nonsense rock 'n' roll. Opening track, " DissDissDissKissKissKiss " may have the [...]
Good, or even passable, punk rock records have become few and far between in recent years. Catchy 3-chord tunes played at a breakneck pace have been replaced by either whiny Emo or atonal rubbish.Thankfully Texas outfit Riverboat Gamblers have stepped to the plate with their new record Underneath the Owl (out March 10th) to rescue us from this bizarre Hell.Much like Against Me!, Riverboat
Rancid is coming!!!! I can feel my patch and button laden jean jacket clawing out from under one of many piles of clothes! Granted they are not the headliner, but that doesn't matter. These boys have been putting on a great show since the 90's and I've been to most of them in the Twin [...]
Punk rock at Red Rocks? May sound like an odd combination, especially when the words Warped Tour aren't attached, but come June 11th, that's exactly what will happen when Rancid and Rise Against perform at the legendary amphitheatre. In fact, that's what will be going down pretty much everywhere for the better part of the summer. As previously reported, the two high-profile punk outfits will team for up for a North American tour beginning in early June. The trek, which will reportedly feature Rise Against headlining with Rancid, Riverboat Gamblers , and [...]
