By Joe Watson 14 January 2013 It's just over a week before multi-award-winning director Quentin Tarantino 's much-anticipated western flick, Django Unchained, takes to the screens in the UK. Tarantino's use of music in the past has resulted in his movies practically owning their soundtracks to an extent that it would seem criminal for it to ever be used elsewhere again. An art mastered by the man aptly dubbed 'Director DJ' over the course of Reservoir Dogs , Pulp Fiction , et al, whose soundtracks are laced with previously [...]

Brum brum. We just saw the film Drive . It made us sad that we don't review films because if we did we would have given it 6 out of 5. Luckily, Drive also has a brilliant soundtrack. The main score (the boring incidental music that no-one really cares about) is by Cliff Martinez . He used to be the drummer in Red Hot *vom* Chilli Peppers. It's good and electronic and atmospheric, but there is no singing. What got us really excited was the inclusion of Kavinsky 's 'Nightcall'. [...]

Nicolas Winding Refnd's Drive is a brilliant neon-lit noir tale of a getaway driver. It is soundtracked to perfection by Cliff Martinez's score and a host of neo-retro '80s synthesizer electronica. Ryan Gosling's character doesn't say much throughout the film so a lot of the time, it's left up to the music to say it for him. Here are some of my highlights from it: 'A Real Hero' bookends the emotional arc of the story, its driven (no pun intended) nostalgic synths adds style to an already considerably stylish film, while reinforcing the motives of [...]
There is big money to be made in human organ trafficking. The exchange of human organs for cash or any other "valuable consideration" (such as a car or a vacation) is illegal in every country except Iran. Nonetheless, international organ trafficking—mostly of kidneys, but also of half-livers, eyes, skin and blood—is flourishing; the World Health [...]

Our society is not a community, but merely a collection of isolated family units. Desperately insecure, fearing his woman will leave him if she is exposed to other men or to anything resembling life, the male seeks to isolate her from other men and from what little civilization there is, so he moves her out [...]

Appearing on "Larry King Live" on Sept. 11, 2001, John Kerry suggested that TWA Flight 800 was brought down by a terrorist act. On Sept. 24 on "Hardball" with Chris Matthews, Kerry casually recited a number of terrorist attacks against the United States, among them TWA "Flight 800." Like Larry King before him, Chris Matthews either did not catch the remark or chose to let it pass. We have been asked a number of times whether these remarks by Kerry and others were purposeful, perhaps a signal that the time was right [...]

SURF'S UP! SPRING HAS SPRUNG. SUMMER HAS ARRIVED. I first heard this album just the other day, and like the saying goes: it blew me away. Like a welcome breeze on a muggy day when the sky is a tight sealed lid. I was questioning my decision to hang onto old soundtracks while clearing the decks on my Hard Drive when I gave up entirely and threw in the towel. What started out as a spring-clean soon escalated into an ill-considered pogrom on my Music Library, and a [...]

RIZ ORTOLANI AND SOME ESSENTIAL DEEP RED THEMES. Video Nasties which have lost their bite, while their scores continue to make the cut. Continuing in the Italian vein, the hysteria surrounding many of the independent movies marketed on the back of the burgeoning video boom in the early 1980s led to legislation in the UK effectively outlawing a long list of titles in 1984. A good many of these low-budget films were produced in Italy and lacked the financial backing to secure mainstream [...]
This week I'm going to highlight 6 great, hard-to-find songs from old, vintage horror/grindhouse movies. The great thing about movies from the late 70's and early 80's is the great disco and synth pop that came with. These songs I picked are pretty much some of the best 70's and 80's songs you'll ever hear. You're in luck because now they're all on this one page for you to download. A big thanks to my Christian and his latest Netflix obsession with old Italian horror, exploitation films and other grindhouse movies. I [...]
