By Danielle Gibson April 30, 2013 The Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) has just announced the long list of twenty albums in the run for the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year Award. These albums represent a variety of genres and musical styles representing the large amount of musical talent in Scotland. Submissions were received by 100 specially invited nominators from Scotland and the rest of the UK music industry as well as elsewhere in the arts and media. Now a four week promotion of the [...]

The Scottish Album of the Year Award longlist has been announced, and there happens to be a little Song, by Toad Records interest this year, as Meursault have been nominated for Something For the Weakened . Now, of course, from my point of view they are the one and only justifiable winner of this award and if it goes to anyone else it will be a fix/swizz/further evidence of the Glasgow-centric, incestuous cliqueyness of the Scottish music industry (delete as appropriate). I would also like to make it clear now that if it [...]

Words by R M Hubbert Manufactured holidays are my favourite holidays. There's no pretence of greater meaning, no mystical crap to denegrate the core message; We should be nicer to each other. It's a good message, whether it's within the context of what we have lost, what we crave or simply in reminding us of what we have. Love is a good thing. It should be celebrated. Don't expect a card though, they're a waste of fucking money. Valentines Playlist by R M Hubbert [...]

Well, after illness has kept me away from the internet for a few days, I am finally back to finish off this particular list. I had my first ever bad oyster, would you believe. Given the long and happy relationship I've had with oysters over the years, I feel personally offended - how dare you do this to me after I have so lovingly scarfed down hundreds and hundreds of your slippery, salty brethren? Have you no sense of gratitude? Apparently not. Anyhow, back to the list of the twenty albums I enjoyed the most [...]

Regular visitors to this site will more than likely already know all about the BAMS, but for any newbies out there I'll you a quick intro. For the past 4 years I have been running an annual poll entitled the Scottish Bloggers and Music Sites Award or Scottish BAMS for short, in which I ask an array of bloggers, DJs and folk who run music web sites to vote for their albums of the year. I then take all these votes and tally them up to see what the most popular of the last 12 months has been. Past winners [...]

It's that time of the year when blog's are pretty dominated by end of year lists, this blog is no different. I love a good end of year list so I do, more often than not it acts as a guide to albums that I might have overlooked. In past years I have discovered amazing albums by the likes of St. Vincent, Beach House and more recently Beth Jeans Houghton. As well as having my own selection of albums, I also run the Scottish BAMS, in which I ask all of Scotland's top music sites and DJ's what's been taking [...]

It was four years ago today that the first ever Peenko blog post went up, now that might not mean a lot to you, but for me it's pretty massive. When you hit so called milestones like this, it makes think back on how much has happened over the past four years. I am not going to sit here and blow my own trumpet too much, but prior to starting this site, doing this such as running a record label, putting on gigs, managing bands, etc, etc, were just pipe dreams. Seeing as I have no musical talent to speak [...]

The problem with having a young lady in your life who has foresworn the devil drink for a couple of months is that when she breaks this habit for an evening and gets utterly massacred on half a bottle of wine, you get the inordinate pleasure of having all last night's conversations for a second time, in the morning, once she's sobered up. So yes, this morning has been a little like Total Recall for me. What's that darling? Josie Long was really good, and made you feel ashamed of your political apathy? What, again? Since last night? [...]

Will Never Die But You Will . Record Store (shop, shop, it's called a fucking SHOP!) Day is always bad news for my cash reserves. I am not, I have to confess, all that enticed by the exclusives, as honestly I find that all a bit gimmicky and pointless, but I do like the idea of encouraging people back into shops and reminding people what a pleasure it is to spend hours poking around through racks of records. Music is a personal, physical thing for me - it involves the sense, of course it's physical! - and gigs and community events like Record Store Day [...]

So you wait for one rambling news post, then along come two in one week. If you're not a fan of my tired inane ramblings then you may want to look away now... First up, the list of acts invited to showcase at this years goNORTH were announced earlier this week. The event which sees some of the most exciting up and coming bands playing across Inverness city centre takes place on [...]

There are two main things happening this week, as far as I can tell. One is the above-mentioned Ides of Toad gig of course, and the other is Record Store Day. I am ambivalent about Record Store Day, I have to confess, as it seems to encourage the worst kind of scalping and eBay profiteering, and it also seems like a poor apology for not spending more time in record shops year round. But at the same time it can be a really nice day, and encourages people back into shops with some really nice, limited edition products. [...]

We are in St. Andrews this weekend for the Fence Collective's Eye of the Dug Festival. Needless to say, The Dugcast or something to that effect might have been more suitable, but there are so many golf twats around town that I really couldn't ignore them, not after all the effort they make to look like complete prats. I get the impression that with golf, the costumes became so ludicrous that really the only way to look cool, instead of dressing like a normal person, was to try and look like an even bigger fuckwit than [...]

Track Listing 1. Car Song (featuring Aidan Moffat) 2. Sunbeam Melts The Hour (featuring Marion Kenny and Hanna Tuulikki) 3. For Joe Download

( Monday Music’s the one weekly blog where SOIWT abandons its London-only focus, and goes global ) RM Hubbert - Sunbeam Melts the Hour (Feat. Marion Kenny & Hanna Tuulikki) Kicking off with swaggering, staggering plucks of a rusty ol' guitar, this could easily be the soundtrack to a violent, slow-motion section in a western, the scene where we see a portrait of domestic happiness which will inevitably get smashed up. The punch-drunk, whiskeyed feel is spellbinding - and appropriate, since Hubbert is a bleary Scot. [...]
