Assuming you are all boycotting Valentine's Day which, let's face it, you really should, we finally enter a week in Edinburgh where there are plenty of options for Superior Fun, after a longer than usual hangover from the Christmas period this year. Limbo is back on Friday too, which is good news. It's not really my kind of lineup I must confess, but Limbo gigs are always good ones, so check it out here . It's also quite a Toady week as well, which is nice. We have our first house gig of the year [...]

Don't ask me why I used a picture of Wayne and Garth on this post I just... well the roadies in their movies were the most memorable, and this post is about touring and stuff, and I couldn't find a picture of a Wayne's World roadie quickly so I thought fuck it. Anyhow, two bits of news: Meursault are touring the UK and Europe as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's main support. Rob St. John is playing SHHH Festival and opening for Bonnie Prince Billy in Oxford [...]

For this podcast I am joined by Ian, who is now a member of the Song, by Toad Records team, to go through a bit of a run-down of what's going to be happening on the label this year. We've got a couple of our more recent releases, like Rob St. John and Lil Daggers, as well as some of our confirmed and ready new albums for next year, by the likes of The Leg, Jesus H. Foxx and Yusuf Azak. I've also got a couple of tracks from bands we'll be releasing on a split [...]

Well, after last year's neck-and-neck battle between Meursault and The National, this year's Song, by Toad Readers' Top Five Albums was something of a stroll by comparison. Although the field behind this album was congested, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins' Diamond Mine was a comfortable winner in the end. Whilst I doubt this quite makes up for missing out on the Mercury Prize to P.J. Harvey, it's interesting to note that after a very strong initial showing, she didn't even make the top five of this particular list. And you can bet your arse she won't [...]

Well here we are again, with lists this time generated by yourselves rather than me. With one exception none of these songs would have been anywhere near my personal Festive Fifty, and the one which would have made it is forbidden due to an obvious clash of interests. It's weird, but it does at the very least go to show that the idea of the blogosphere being just a great big mutual back-slapping exercise, with everyone telling everyone else just how awesome they are most of the time, isn't entirely accurate. Still, just because I am an opinionated [...]

Despite the end of the year fast approaching, thankfully the quality of new music shows no signs of slowing. Here are the best of our November offerings, together with some tasty new tracks to round off the mix.Over thirty great songs - just right for the roaring fire and the cocoa! Download Siskiyou - Twigs And Stones mp3 (from Keep Away The Dead) Brilliantly judged restless blend of country rock, folk, and grand orchestral rock. Download The Cloud Nothings – No Future / No Past mp3 (from Attack [...]

Some music is just made for you to stare out onto a beautiful foggy landscape and contemplate all of life's big questions – or more simply put, thinking music. Rob St. John produces thinking music but not the kind of moping, self indulgent moaning that you'd associate with Drake's lovelorn whinging that somehow manages to sound good. No, Rob St. John's often hard to hear at times as his voice booms and vanishes as if too shy to stay out in the spotlight but despite only being able to hear snippets of lyrics, Weald recalls The First [...]

Weald is the first LP by Rob St. John , released last week on gatefold 12" vinyl by Song, by Toad Records - we've posted about him before and it is great to see he has now got a full length album out. Even better that he should have delivered a record of such outstanding quality that puts many of the so called bigger names in the alt-folk and singer songwriter arenas to shame. From the catchy, but fragile opener The Phantom Limb to the raw textures of The Acid Test and [...]

Sorry couldn't resist the Patrick Bateman in headphones photo when looking for an "HQ" & "Music/Headphones" image. If you have read the book American Psycho, you will know that when they get into describing music (regardless of style) you will know what it is like to be a music junkie. But I digress... Thought I would simply grab whatever is kinda new and playing around here up for perusal, listening and mocking. You know, a Saturday playlist! First off, the band responsible for one of my favourite albums in the last few years has [...]

Some new material from Rob St. John has made its way round these parts this week. The promo single Sargasso Sea is a bit of a belter. You can listen to it right here. It's a five minute intense of darkly intense tunage that is a perfect soundtrack for a miserable November weekend. Saragossa Sea is drawn from the forthcoming release Weald that is being released through Song By Toad Records on 21st November. [...]

die iren, um genauer zu sein die belfaster haben ihr zweites album am start, bereits am 08. november erschien auf sargent house / richter collective "gangs", welches erneut wieder die postrockistische instrumentalkeule auspackt, das hat was, höret: and so i watch you from afar - beautiful universe master champion and so i watch you from afar - search: party animal gut ding will weile haben, amish records verfolgt diesen ansatz konsequent, nun ist für den 24. januar ein neuer release [...]
A few weeks back I babbled a wee bit about a Rob St. John and Ian Humberstone split 7" (short version, it's really blooming good) and now with the release of Weald, Rob St. John's new album, just around the corner there's a new, free single available to share with you. Like Your Phantom Limb, the last single, I find myself incapable of doing much more than pointing at Sargasso Sea and shouting "THIS IS ACE!" so just a listen to it below and download it if you like it, it is free after all. [...]

As we get closer and closer to the official release of Weald, Rob St. John's debut album, we figured one last freebie was worth offering up, and if you still aren't into it, then frankly there's no redeeming you, sorry. After the gorgeous Your Phantom Limb (available to preview and to buy on 73 here ) we figured something bigger and more upbeat was in order, to showcase the full range of the album. Sargasso Sea may start out small, but it builds to a great crescendo of harmonies, charging forward with forceful [...]

This is called the Barfcast because I feel like utter, unmitigated shite this morning, after another awesome evening with Mrs. Toad getting scooshed and playing records. I think I had Weald on at the maximum volume our amp can actually manage. Which, for the record, is pretty fucking loud. So now I am off to get ready for not one, but three gigs. Firstly the Ides of Toad at Henry's, then Lach and Viv Albertine after that, and then Flamin' Hott Toadzzz! in Anstruther tomorrow. When the chance to have a good sleep comes, I think I will [...]

Words: Saam Das I've listened to at least 100 tracks to compile this list of my top ten singles of October. I could have saved myself the bother and simply declared Lana Del Rey the winner for her widely acclaimed 'Video Games' single. Except we were emailed about her last May and didn't think she was particularly amazing. And still don't. Yet. So instead check out ten other artists who we think are more worthy of your time below. [...]

Malky from eagleowl asked if a friend of his could come along to Rob St. John's album launch the other week and take some pictures. Well he did, and despite the lighting being a bit of a challenge, they've turned out beautifully. The gentleman in question is Iain Stewart, whose website is here , and here is a small selection of pics from Pilrig the other week. Thanks - they look fantastic!
Scotland's Rob St. John plays haunted electric folk music and has a great sense for lyrically playful language. You can get an impression of that in his video for " Sargossa Sea ", first single taken from his debut LP Weald , out on 21st November via Song, by Toad Records . Rob St. John - Tumblr
