I've been thinking a lot about the list-making process. Someone recently asked me: What is the purpose of making a list? My initial reaction - because it's fun - is actually somewhat shallow. Is it really? Yeah, probably...somewhat...maybe? But if so, still: Why? In listening to me think out loud about this, my wife commented that she doesn't make lists for fun. Why, then? "To keep myself sane. To make sure I don't forget things I need to do." In other words: To make order out of chaos. To provide structure to an unstructured world. As [...]

Previous albums from Robbers On High Street made comparisons to Spoon, but four years later things have changed. With Hey There Golden Hair , they dive headfirst into Beatlesque power pop. The opener "Hollow Hill" is a perfect example of taking elements of Fab Four style and crafting something new and wonderful. There is not a single dud on the album, mixing Hammond Organ, fuzz guitar riffs and horns to melodic perfection. Other 602s and 702s stylistic touches are sprinkled throughout, as "Crystal Run" and "Electric Eye" are legit hits if they made the radio. And the band does [...]
Next week, some 900 bands will rain down upon New York City at the 2011 edition of CMJ Music Marathon . Here's the dilemma: You can't see 900 bands. You might see 100, but despite all the cab fares and hours of sleep you'll waste away, you won't see it all. That's okay, you'll still catch plenty of talent. Even if your plane lands late (it's inevitable), or your trip from JFK to Manhattan ends up being one long, monotonous slog, chances are you'll still have plenty of tales from The Cake Shop or The Bowery to [...]
A clever, confident amalgam of '60s psych and '70s pop, Robbers on High Street have delivered one of the year's most unexpected surprises. If you're looking for proof that sometimes a band just needs time to find its true identity -- and time and patience being in short supply in today's instant gratification, buzzblog music culture -- allow me to present Robbers on High Street's third album, Hey There Golden Hair. When most of the world last checked in with ROHS, way back in 2005, the band was riding the success of their debut single, "Japanese Girls", an...

Robbers on High Street's third LP, Hey There Golden Hair , is finally out, and I can happily report that it is the band's best record yet. Given and Taken in Ink has covered the band somewhat extensively ; for example, you can read the heartwarming tale of mistaken identity in the lawless wild west of post-Napster mp3 downloading, a journey which led me to discover RoHS. It was GTI's inaugural non-"hey, read my new blog!" post (i.e. the second thing I wrote about here). Anyway, neither you nor anyone else cares about that. [...]
Thursday things, and there are plenty: ► Robbers on High Street — the New Yorkers' new album "Hey There Golden Hair" will simply hit you in your pop place — headline the Roxy, with L.A.'s the Allah-Las and the Street & Babe Shadow opening. (Your friendly neighborhood Buzz Bands LA blogger will be DJing the evening.) ► The Horrors rock the El Rey Theatre behind their new album "Skying." The Stepkids [see Monday's post ] open. That's the Horrors' video [...]
This is one of the best weeks for new album releases in a while - the list of bands with fresh drops reads like a line-up for Coachella. With at least a dozen popular artists like The Drums, The Kooks, Grouplove, Blitzer Trapper, Neon Indian, Girls, Mates of State, St. Vincent, Robbers on High Street, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Ben Trokan's story is a familiar one to any indie band that lived in the major-label margins last decade. His band Robbers on High Street made two albums and two EPs for Warner imprint New Line Records between 2005 and '07 before the relationship soured. "Everything ground to a halt," Trokan says. "The label was not responsive, people stopped returning phone calls, we had no idea what was going on." ||| Download: "Hey Unbelievers" (via KEXP) The seeds of Robbers' chipper comeback album "Hey There Golden Hair" [...]

After two years of work, Robbers on High Street will be releasing their newest album "Hey There Golden Hair" on September 13. This will be the first record they've made with their current line-up, still producing the piano-pumping, brass-rocking high energy rock as ever. Until fall, they'll be playing at Brooklyn Bowl on Mondays in August, and pre-orders are available on PledgeMusic, where fans can receive prizes based on the size of the sum they pay for the new CD.

Robbers On High Street release of their third full-length, Hey There Golden Hair on Sept 13, 2011. We caught up with Ben Troken to give you some old hidden gems (and one new one): Truck – Surprise, Surprise (1974) Truck from Singapore, I think they only had this one album called Surprise, Surprise in the early 70s. It was 3 members of the band The October Cherries. Broken Chair is the most beautiful song in the world. Charlie Fawn – [...]

Robbers on High Street have been out of the spotlight for four years. But they're charging back in armed with tambourines aplenty and Daptone horns. Their third LP, Hey There Golden Hair , is set for release on September 13. It will be digitally distributed through the conneXtion and released in association with PledgeMusic. If you like the live version of Watch Me Disappear , you'll be even more impressed with the album and all of its jangly pop goodness. That's why I suggest you pre-order the album or [...]
The bouncy bass first heard during "The Fatalist" works well alongside a very angular approach by the Robbers on High Street. What results is a style of music that relies heavily on a eighties sound even as the band wedges themselves into the retro style of rock that is played by acts like The Killers [...]
Well, well, well. It seems Robbers on High Street's Hey There Golden Hair will be released after all. The band put out a vinyl/digital single for two songs from the album, "Electric Eye" and "Face in the Fog," almost a year ago, and we haven't heard a whole lot about the album since then. But, it looks like 2011 will be a big year for the Robbers, as not only is their new album coming out in September, but the band will be releasing a limited edition EP in July. Until then, they've released [...]
