American born Robbie Basho was one of the main pioneers of introducing the acoustic steel string guitar in America. His guitar style was quite remarkable, possessing a dexterous, finger-picked guitar technique, influenced heavily by Sarod playing and the studies he undertook with the Indian virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan. Basho had an interest in Indian music after hearing Ravi Shankar, whom he first came across in 1962. Basho brought out his debut LP "The Seal of the Blue Lotus" in 1965 on John Fahey's Takoma Records. Fahey was a very influential character, coining the genre ' American Primitivism [...]

The most exciting news of this morning just laid on my Facebook wall by Josh from Tompkins Square - A new documentary on the life, music and myth of John Fahey is being produced these days. For those who have no idea who I'm talking about (can that be? you're reading my blog, he's mentioned every second post), John Fahey was an American guitarist, owner of a small label called Takoma Records , and an [...]
Yeah, I know that the categories widget in the right side-bar says that there have already been 187 or 188 Sunday Mix Tapes, but this is number 185. I'm sure of it. Maybe the others weren't official SMTs, because maybe I didn't post them on a Sunday! Did you ever think about that, asshole? Well, think about it, then. I'm perfectly fine just sitting here and waiting for you to finish thinking. I don't have anywhere to be until tomorrow morning. Then I have to work. Ugh. I hate my life. RULES for uninitiated noobs : [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Jack Rose , a renowned Philadelphia-based acoustic guitarist, has died of a heart attack at 38, the Philadelphia Daily News reports . Rose was born in Virginia in 1971. His professional musical career began in the Richmond noise band Pelt, which formed in 1993. But Rose is best known for his solo work, which he began recording in the early 2000s, releasing numerous EPs and LPs on a number of different labels, most frequently VHF. Rose, who also went by the [...]

I will continue preaching from the gospel Robbie Basho until you are all converted. Upon first hearing Seal Of The Blue Lotus I have been hooked on his steel string acoustic ragas. Along with John Fahey and Leo Kottke, he helped pave the way for modern folk masters like Jack Rose, Sir Richard Bishop and James Blackshaw. Basho was inspired by Sarod playing, studied with Ali Akbar Khan, combined music with Japanese, Hindu and Native American philosophy, and ascended to otherworldly levels of song-crafting. He employed various open tunings and 12-string guitars to recreate the drones [...]
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : BANGALORE, India -- The bells started with the first light of dawn, maybe around 5:30, as people came to the Hindu temple next door to make offerings, each signaling the spiritual presence with a peal or two, just a little ting. Then a couple more a... Read more

Litany of Echoes contains a great deal of stunning musicianship. And James Blackshaw , who has released more full lengths in five years than anyone could expect, continues to exhibit his compositional skills. Unfortunately for him, he's British and listeners should be able to tell pretty quickly. If given a chance, any fan can differentiate between Bert Jansch and Townes Van Zandt . Their respective countries are vocally expressed through music. The same is true of Blackshaw – except his cultural baggage is displayed via his 12-string [...]

Unfortunately or not, The Fall Apartment really has nothing to do with the Slip . That band's metamorphosis over the years has encompassed a great deal of stylistic variety, but doesn't ever really touch upon acoustic, instrumental guitar music. The lone, potential meeting of Barr's group and his solo outing is that of production value. Even while this disc focuses on Barr's guitar, there are occasional flares of studio treachery more commonly found in electric music. The first time that some obvious tape hiss rears its head is on "War." And [...]

We bought a small portion this massive record collection in March/April of this year, and I was shocked to find not one but two copies of this album buried amongst the three or four thousand records that were purchased. Robbie Basho The Seal Of The Blue Lotus MediaFire Download Link Tracklist: 01. Bardo Blues - "An attempt at a musical rendering of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. It moves thru the beginning of death, subsequent limbo voyages, into rebirth. [...]

Photo credit: Mark Sullo Last week's part one featured some excellent electric guitar playing in various styles. It was a reference to Sir Richard Bishop's fantastically titled album While My Guitar Violently Bleeds (released on Locust Music earlier this year, make sure to get the vinyl version if you have a record player, just for the beautiful artwork alone) although it did not have anything to do with the actual record itself. This second part however explores the sound of acoustic guitar instruments and comes a [...]

Last night I enlisted Steve and Ilya to drive south to San Clemente to visit one of the Pizza Port brew pubs. It was about what I expected: above average food and really tasty beers. After ordering food and drinks we sat outside at a long, narrow picnic table, shoveling our faces until it was time for another round of beers. When we were full, we decided to talk a walk down to the San Clemente Municipal Pier and its surrounding beach. We sat watching the tide before deciding to walk to the end of the pier. I [...]
